Sony has released a new mini-game for PlayStation Home today based on Street Fighter x Tekken. You can play against a CPU or fight against Homies online to unlock prizes. There are ten challenges in total and once all of them have been completed you’ll receive special Ryu and Kazuya costumes. Unlike most costumes available in Home, these actually seem to be proper skins with unique animations. Also, if you pre-order SFxT from within PlayStation Home, you’ll receive the Boost Gem Trial Pack 1 bundle as a bonus.

I had a chance to try the game out for myself and it’s not as bad as I thought it’d be. It’s basically a glorified version of Rock, Paper, Scissors with a few extra gimmicks thrown in to make it more interesting. If you land a command in the “sweet spot”, your attack will be unblockable. An opponent can block this move by guessing correctly but they also have to perform a perfect block by landing in the “sweet spot” as well. There’s also a Special Bar that builds up after landing or blocking attacks. Once you have enough meter stored, you’re able to tag in Ryu or Kazuya and they’ll perform a special move.

So far, I’ve unlocked two Home rewards – giant Nebuta Ornaments for Ryu and Kazuya to place inside your personal Home Space. Check out this brief gameplay video I recorded if you want to see what the mini-game is like.

Apparently you can perform Zero’s lightning loop combo mid-screen if you are at least in X-Factor level one. In fact, you can even lightning loop in many different directions to style on your opponent. It’s a bit impractical considering it takes both X-Factor and a level of meter to perform, but it’s easily one of Zero’s most stylish combo options yet.

Broken Pixels is a group known for producing songs about the games they love. They just released a 4 minute rap for Street Fighter x Tekken called “Taggin In” featuring some slick production value and some hype video work to go with it. In fact, the instrumental you’re hearing is a remixed version of the games main theme. Definitely worth a watch. Also linked below is a Soul Calibur V song by the same group. This kind of production takes a lot of work, and it’s always good to see artistic expression channeled into something cool in this community. Good work guys.

Dominion Method Gaming recently posted a great piece Eric “Juicebox Abel” Albino wrote on his experiences at last weekend’s Winter Brawl 6 tournament. While King of Fighters XIII was his sole focus while training before the tournament, his showing in Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition ver. 2012 was infinitely more impressive as he worked his way through multiple killers like Sanford “Santhrax” Kelly and Kevin “Dieminion” Landon to face Justin Wong in the grand finals. His passion for the game and competition definitely shows through his play style and celebratory antics, but his dedication is most apparent when he loses. This article is a great look at his personal feelings on his performances at the tournament, his thoughts during, and what he plans to accomplish in the future. Here’s a small excerpt, but definitely make it a point to read the whole thing over at Dominion Method Gaming.

Ever since I started playing games competitively, I set out with the goal to become the very best, like no one ever was. Anyone can tell that I’m not there yet. However, Winter Brawl showed me something important. If I’m going to break this plateau that I’ve reached (to go “super saiyan”, if you will), then the time is now. This is the highest I’ve placed at a major since getting 3rd place at West Coast Warzone 3, where my final loss came from Ricky Ortiz, the other great Rufus. This is an obvious sign. My problem is Rufus. If I can gain the knowledge necessary to defeat either or both of these fighting game dreadnoughts, then I will be one step closer to the ultimate goal of winning EVO. Equipped with a sponsorship from DMG, there isn’t anything holding me back from accomplishing this goal.

Mattdeezie recently posted the Cross Assault daily blog on Capcom-Unity. Today’s topic goes over their contestant selection process, touching on what they were looking for in cast members as well as offering some insight into why Justin Wong and Xian weren’t chosen to join the show. They go through each of their choices to highlight why they thought the players would fit well on their respective teams, making strong cases for each and their viability to compete. It’s great to hear that Alex Valle and Aris Bakhtanians were brought on to not only coach the teams, but to also help make sure they were balanced for competition. Here’s a small excerpt to get you started, but definitely read the rest over at Capcom-Unity.

One of the things we quickly came to agreement on, was that this is a Street Fighter game, and Street Fighter players will have an innate advantage. So, yes, that is why the resumes on Team Tekken are a bit stacked. Additionally, we tried to target players that played Tekken, but still had some Street Fighter experience, to try and even the playing field. We did make it a criteria to select players from Team Tekken that have made a splash in the Tekken community. So for all those Street Fighter players that applied for Team Tekken, good try, but unfortunately you axed yourself.

Since the coaches have an incentive if their team wins Cross Assault, we wanted to make sure that they were part of the process, and signed off on the opposing team before locking it down. This will ensure both coaches feel the teams are balanced. Both coaches and the majority of our crew were involved in the discussion to lock the contestants. Cross Assault has a lot of strategic layers attached to it, and the way the coaches manage their team is a huge aspect of the show. So, for those claiming that Team Tekken is overpowered, you can give some credit to Aris for his negotiating tactics.

Coming into round nine was Momochi, who’s Cody made incredibly short work of Tokido’s Akuma the round before. Before him stood two powerhouses of the Japanese fighting game community, Mago and Daigo. While Momochi was able to take Mago to deuce in the first set, he unfortunately ended up falling to the 2D God’s Fei Long in another close set, bowing out at 8th place. Mago then went on to face Daigo, losing to his Ryu in the first set before dominating him in the second six games to one. The final set came down to the wire as the competitors evened out at five games apiece, with Mago eventually winning out in another deuce set. You can check out the results of both matches below, as well as the overall standings. Mago will start the next round on February 24th against Fuudo, with Kazunoko waiting in the wings for the victor. And, as always, you can head over to Tokido77′s blog for descriptions of each round.

Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3′s latest costume pack was released today, so of course we have a great blog from Brelston on Capcom-Unity detailing the inspirations behind them. The Viewtiful Strange pack contains outfits for Viewtiful Joe, Tron, Phoenix Wright, Doctor Strange, Dormammu, and Nova, raising the bar on previous packs with six costumes instead of only four. As always, Chris Baker of Marvel joins in on the fun with some insight on the Marvel costumes. There was also a bit of info concerning the delayed Ancient Warrior pack, which has also been included below.

But before we dive into the details, we have an update regarding the delayed “Ancient Warrior” pack – it will appear on March 6 for a reduced price of $1.99/160 Microsoft Points, as it will only contain Hulk, Arthur and Firebrand. This pack arrives the same day as the Value Pack, which bundles all prior packs into one for the bargain price of $20.00/1600 MSP.

Joe drops his flashy outfit for standard civilian duds seen throughout the Viewtiful series. The dev team considered using Captain Blue or even Joe cosplaying as Captain America (as seen in the MvC3 credits) but went for this instead; the other options wouldn’t change Joe’s silhouette much, whereas this outfit mixes things up.

This is a brand new, UMvC3-exclusive look for both Tron and her trusty Gustaff, with the iconic Servbots as serving as inspiration. Notice how the silver trim up top has a space wide enough for Tron to stand up during certain moves. Another consideration was to make Tron look like Roll.

Lots happening in this one! Phoenix himself dons his university attire from Trials & Tribulations, but there’s an extra layer at work – if his voice is set to English, his shirt displays “P” and his shoes “W,” but if you change the voice to Japanese, it appropriate switches to “R” and “N”, reflecting his name in the original versions. Missile looks a bit like Amaterasu’s Talbain skin, and if the team had time, they would’ve liked to make Maya look more like her sister, Mia Fey.

Though Doctor Strange has certainly varied up his look enough over the years to make us think about it a bit, the ultimate decision came down to two options: the way he’s looked for the last couple years or the late-‘60s persona he adopted to kick the butt of a Doctor Strange impostor. We decided “big blue badass” was a little more compelling than “dude in a trench coat.”

Super-observant fans may have noticed that one alternate color scheme, the one that referenced his most iconic costume, was missing in the jump from MvC3 to UMvC3. The reason – we’re doing it right this time. Before MvC3, whenever most people thought “Dormammu” (well, if they even knew who he was), they thought of the guy this costume. Though I’m thinking this game’s popularity may have changed that…

I’ve seen it stated that this new look for Nova is based on his new look in the comics (specifically, MARVEL POINT ONE). Close! But wrong. The truth is, I’m still not allowed to tell you what this Nova is from. You’ll find out soon, I’m told, but I’m sworn to secrecy until then. So…any guesses?…
