    The Mojochan Saturn to PSX & SNES to PSX converter thread

    Interested in purchasing one of these fine converters? See this thread:

    http://forums.shoryuken.com/showthread.php?t=220530

    based on ReKleSS's design: http://forums.shoryuken.com/showthread.php?t=165281

    i've found someone that is interested at taking on the project of making the converters once again.. but understandably he would like to gauge how many would be interested in purchasing. (fellow SRKer mojochan)

    i've also asked him if he would be interested in conjuring up a few snes converters as well, and while possible, i figured i would see if anyone may be interested in those too.

    he is approximating between $30-35 shipped from the UK for the saturn to psx, and that isn't bad considering that is about what ReKleSS sold his for. as for the snes that is still pretty much up in the air.

    i know that i am definitely in for a few, and i already know of a few others that are eager. thanks!!

    Saturn to PSX: very interested at $30. Any more and it's getting too pricey for me.

    The official Saturn PSX pads are too expensive now so this is the sensible thing.

    Very interested in the Saturn adapter at that price. If twin sticks work in both Virtual On games I'd probably stock up, just in case.

    Put me down for a few, especially if I can have my wacky button mapping that I use when I wire these up. SNES to PSX might be fun. If someone's down for custom work I really need a SNES to NES converter (for basically the same reason as zeetes).

    As for people doubting the value of this. Here's your alternative.

    I would kill for an snes -> wii adapter / conversion guide (an actual wiimote connection ala classic controller)

    I would definitely be interested in one for PSX. I have a Saturn converter for my DC and Xbox and wished there was one for my PSX systems.

    Is there something you can't use the GameCube controllers on? I'm guessing so. There are SNES/NES to GameCube converters otherwise.

    As far as I know, all of the whatever to Wii converters only allow you to use the whatever on games compatible with the classic controller or gamecube controller. I don't think anyone has attempted a converter to eliminate the Wiimote/nunchuck combo yet.

    I'm in for a Saturn->PSX and a buddy of mine at work will buy at least 2.
    I've been holding off doing a Saturn->DB15, because it's a sin to the gaming gods! (still wan't to do it though }^])
    ....really more like Saturn pads won't always be easy to come by, surprised it isn't harder already. And a lot of strides of been made lately for Saturn->current gen.

    Toodles earlier in the year mentioned possibly having something in the works, but haven't heard anything.

    There are a few games I can think of off the top of my head, samurai showdown anthology (wouldnt use a snes pad for that but still), i've been told megaman 9 - I also like the convenience of wireless when im on my wii.

    If your friend wants to make a killing; program these converters to work with the Virutal On Twinstick.

    As a guide for the Saturn Virtual On stick layout.
    and

    http://www.joytron.co.kr/goods/view....de=CD007-00377

    saturn psx
    x []
    z o
    y /\
    B X

    A R2
    C R1

    L L2
    R L1

    Start + A = Start

    Start + L = Select

    I believe that is the layout for VOOT on XBox 360 and with the Xconverter360 and these adapters; it would be a service to the Virtual On community.

    As one of the first few testers of ReKleSS's converters; I wholeheartedly recommend this venture.

    Also, why not try to use a Cthulhu end so a converter would work on a USB connection and multiconsole port? That where's the smart money is on converters ;)

    I understand the purpose of Start + Button = Action but in practice it drives me batshit crazy. I can't recondition myself that Start is not Start. That's my biggest complaint on the ReKleSS converter. I do need the Select button, but I assign it as the left trigger when I mod pads. Regardless, I am hyped to get this going!

    to update: he is working on a prototype so he can see what needs to be tweaked etc. otherwise according to him, the code is very well written by ReKleSS and that there is no reason why it should be difficult to reproduce.

    Hi. It's me, Mojo, the guy doing this little project

    I have the prototype working now. Needs more testing and some design issues need to be finalised.

    This is actually a dual converter. It converts a Saturn digital pad to Playstation 1/2 and NeoGeo/Supergun. You can have just PSX if you like, or just Supergun, or both.

    Because everyone wants different button mapping, I think the best option will be to have multiple mappings available. I could add switches to the box, but an easier way would be to base the mapping on a button that is held down when the controller is plugged in. That means up to 10 (9 buttons + no button) mappings which should cover everyone.

    For examples of my work, see http://denki.world3.net (tech details) and http://retro.world3.net.

    Keep in mind I am just a hobbyist, I'm not in this for the money. Patience is appreciated :)

    I'd love to support them. I already have analogue NiGHTS controllers working on another project, and was tempted to support them here but I'm not sure if there is much point going to all the extra effort.

    Matarick, your links are dead and I couldn't find any technical data on the Twin Stick. Any info would be appreciated.

    With things like this, it's going to help to either have the controller to test myself or to have someone who can test my code and do updates. There is a guy in China who is helping me a lot with that, but I don't think he has a Twin Stick or a PS1 (I only have a PS2 and a PS2->USB converter). The issue is the tester needs to be able to do firmware updates. If no-one has the kit (you know if you do) then I'll see if I can find an alternative.

    Otherwise, people have sent me controllers in the past to work with. I always return them, of course.

    State your preferred button mapping please :)

    SNES to PSX is easy, in fact I could add it to this project if I could find the time. Maybe one day, but I have a bit too much on atm to do one-offs.

    I am working on a version of my Retro Adapter for Wii, but it will probably use the Gamecube connection rather than the Wiimote Classic Controller connection. The Retro Adapter supports SNES pads, among other things. Only issue is that I don't have a Wii, only a Gamecube and there appear to be some subtle differences I am still working to iron out.

    Anyway, is there a particular reason that the Wiimore CC connection is better? I was under the impression that most games supported Gamecube controllers.

    Also, why not try to use a Cthulhu end so a converter would work on a USB connection and multiconsole port? That where's the smart money is on converters ;)
    I am working on a joystick controller PCB similar to that, but with native Dreamcast support and better functionality. Codename is SUPERPLAY.

    I suppose I could drop Supergun support down to only 4 buttons and add support for SNES, NES, Megadrive (Genesis), Dreamcast etc but it would be a much bigger project. Also, I looked at the Cthulhu cables and the design is... well, let's say, "not optimal". Since I am only a hobbyist and don't want to spend my life making cables I have designed mine to be as easy and quick as possible to produce, and as such they are not compatible with Cthulhu.

    Such a project would be long and tricky. In theory there is nothing to stop someone making an anything->anything converter. Maybe if someone could organise an open source project to do it then it might happen, one day...

    Oh, forgot to mention my default button mapping

    A -> X
    B -> O
    C -> R2

    X -> []
    Y -> /\
    Z -> L2

    L -> L1
    R -> R1

    Start -> Start

    I think the best way of doing this will be to provide mappings based on the default setup for common games (e.g. Guilty Gear, Street Fighter, some shmups). That way you can just plug the adapter in and play, even on a friend's console.

    After that I'll consider people's demands on their merits :)

    Oh, and I need to think of a good name for this thing because Saturn to PSX/Supergun/NeoGeo is a bit of a mouthful ;)

  24. #24
    Registered User Chad's Avatar

    That mapping looks good to me! I take it that setup would be the default (no buttons held)? I think that would be great.

    If you are starting a list of people that want these please put me down for two. Let me know if I should send an email or whatever. Thanks for the update.

    As for a name, how about "Saturn to PSX: The only option."

    The button mapping seems spot on with the exception of having Z -> R1, R -> L2. At least in my opinion.
