$30 bucks for Hori Fighting Sticks: a steal?

I'm a little hesitant before I make this final move to purchase what are apparently Wii Hori Fighting sticks being sold for $22. Unfortunately, shipping costs a ton ($7) but in the end, it comes down cheaper than most prices I've seen for the accessory ($40). Is $30 for the Wii Fighting Stick a good deal?

That is a good deal. Stock the stick is more than playable and it really isn't that hard to mod if you want to go that way. And this stick is a hell of a lot better than that half ounce plastic TvC piece of trash that got released.

Isn't it just a Wii version of the Hori Fighting Stick 3?

Anywho, that seems to be a fine price for it. In the UK the lowest price I can find them for is £39.99($60), so I would definitely buy that.

Thanks for reassuring my suspicion with what other people have been telling me about MadCatz.

Anyways, I got it. Since I play shmups as well, I might as well hone some fighter skills with a "tournament legal" stick. Would it be okay to post the link from where I bought it from?

I think Sazae was referring to the Exar TvC stick. Halfounce doesn't exactly describe the Madcatz SE.

But yeah, $30 is a good deal. They usually sell for $50ish.

Yeah, Sazae must have been referring to some other stick with TvC art because the Madcatz Wii stick is the same as the SE: solidly built with a hefty weight and uses crap imitation parts but it is very easy to mod without any soldering and dremeling.

The Hori Wii stick is the same as the Hori FS3/EX2: much lighter in weight with not not much space inside, and it uses Hori parts with the buttons soldered to a board making it very difficult to mod if you don't have the tools and skills to do so.

With all of that said, $30 for the Hori Wii stick is still a good deal, just don't expect an easy time modding and replacing the parts if they break after heavy use.

$30 is a good price for that stick—I can't find it for less than $40 anywhere.

I agree. It's a pain, but it is totally possible. It might be even worth it for a fun project.

Yes, Sazae talking about the Exar being not cool, not the Mad Catz.

I don't have any plans modding the unit any time soon, and I do think I know a few people I could hook up with in case I do.

    Are they durable sticks nonetheless?

    I see.

Are most sticks usually Horis/Exars? I know the ones used in tournaments are custom built.

^ FS3 isn't a horrible stick stock, if you don't have plans to mod it then it's a decent stick. I was sent to the loser's bracket, and the guy that beat me made it to the top 8 in the tourney I was in a week ago using a stock FS3.

Sorry for any confusion, I was talking about the Exar stick. I have not played on any Madcatz stick for the Wii. I like the Hori one stick, it plays great for me. I have plenty of sticks with all the top parts (Sanwa, Seimitsu, and Happ) and I have no trouble with this one. I guess from playing with years with whatever was stock in an arcade cab I'm not to picky. People can kick ass on sub-par parts and putting in new parts into a stick isn't going to magically make you better.

Hori and Madcatz account for most of the sticks out there. You will see far more Madcatz TEs, MAS sticks, Hori FS3/EX2s, and HRAPs at a tournament than customs.

What seller? I wouldnt mind picking one up for a light and quick mod.
And yes, the price is good for a decent stick. I payed more for my first mayflash a year ago so...I'd say go for it.

Got it from Redford Films thanks to a post in Cheap Ass Gamer.

So I guess it is true MadCatz have gone up in quality over the years. How does it compare to Hori's (sticks), though? I've heard more people prefering the MadCatz that would be bundled with the Tatsunoko vs. Capcom bundle.

The two brands are pretty close to equal.

Madcatz jumped ahead when they made the SE/TE, as those had features that Hori didn't realize people wanted (Hori previously dominated the market so I suppose they thought they could churn out the same sticks over and over)... quick disconnects on the buttons, start/select buttons kept off the face of the stick, simpler modding, arcade quality with no modding necessary (TE).

Hori is soon releasing the HRAP V. From what I've read, it'll bridge this gap that Madcatz made and make the two brands equal again.

Damn. I never caught on with that news until now. Should I have waited for the TvC arcade stick bundle instead of getting this? If MadCatz has indeed jumped in quality, perhaps it was brash of me to get the Hori ones thinking they were superior?

The Madcatz TvC stick is only superior in modding potential, not in the stock buttons and stick. Like others have said, if your not planning on modding it anytime soon the Hori Wii stick should be fine.

Dammit! I didn't get the fighting stick! Redford Films called me and told me my order was cancelled because they were all sold out.

Oh well, I guess another one for MadCatz.
