New TEKKEN 6 Wireless Arcade Stick Info Unveiled!

Posted by MarkMan On September - 22 - 2009

Usually the words ‘wireless’ and ‘arcade stick’ don’t mix, but with TEKKEN 6 and the limited edition bundled fighting stick from Hori… TEKKEN team director Katsuhiro Harada wants everyone to know how this is a match made in heaven…

The TEKKEN 6 IGN Blog has been updated! Series producer Katsuhiro Harada shares his thoughts on two compelling pieces included in the Limited Edition of TEKKEN 6!  Click below to see more information on both the TEKKEN art book and the wireless Fighting Stick!

Most of the IGN TEKKEN Blog focused on the wireless fighting stick, but there were some new images from the artbook as well.  Here is what Harada had to say about the bundled arcade stick!

Many hardcore fighting game fans already own several sticks, and there are so many on the market with similar features, you may feel you don’t need another. Many people play current generation hardware with wireless controllers and don’t notice any problems with response time. The cord on a fighting stick is comparably quite a hassle; especially in recent years, since TVs have gotten larger, putting players further away from the screen.

The Tekken team determined that players should have a reliable fighting stick without cords, different from others on the market, which could be used with all of their favorite games.

We consulted with HORI about the stick and things really took-off from our first meeting, and we decided to move forward with development.

Our arcade stick and button specifications were given to HORI, along with the lever/button layout, stick height and other information so they could match it. We were also determined to make the wrist rest portion of the stick as comfortable as possible based on experience with other sticks.

When making the decision to create a wireless stick, we wanted to ensure signal delay would never be a problem. We had several hardcore players play numerous fighting games with both wired and wireless sticks, and none could tell a difference. Success! Check out the stick specs for the PS3 and Xbox 360 version:

PS3 Wireless Stick Spec
• The first wireless PS3 arcade stick on the market
• 8 button layout / Arcade style joystick and buttons
• Integrated 2.4 GHz high-performance wireless technology for seamless game play
• Licensed Tekken 6 artwork used on the plate design.
• Transmission Range: Up to 32 feet
• Battery life: Up to 40 hours on two AA batteries
• Weight: Less than 2 ½ pounds
• Maximum number of sticks: 7 (when using USB Hub)

X360 Wireless Stick Spec
• The first wireless Xbox360 arcade stick on the market
• 8 button layout / Arcade style joystick and buttons
• Integrated 2.4 GHz high-performance wireless technology for game play
• Licensed Tekken 6 artwork used on the plate design.
• Integrated headset port allowing chat via Xbox LIVE
• Transmission Range: Up to 32 feet
• Battery life: Up to 40 hours
• Weight: Less than 2 ½ pounds
• Maximum number of sticks: 4

Pretty interesting info, right? The convenience of a wireless stick will be noticeable immediately whether you’re sitting far from your TV or when passing the stick around with friends. This wireless stick is exactly what we hoped to create and we are sure players will be happy with the results.

Here’s my two cents on the sticks:

The wireless arcade stick is very good. If you’re looking for a tournament level arcade stick or something using high end Sanwa components, this stick might not be for you.

But if you want something that plays solid and has the convenience of wireless, then this is definitely the stick you want to get. I have over 120 arcade sticks in my collection, and I will definitely be using this on my X360/PS3 when training at home/in practice mode due to the convenience of sitting on my couch and relaxing rather than propping up my TE stick on my table/on the floor.

The stick itself is compact and comfortable enough to play with on your lap or on a table. Wireless signals have come a long way and if you’re worried about lag/latency, you shouldn’t be.

The battery life per set of AA batteries on these sticks is very long, it’s not like the Li-Ion battery on the Dual Shock 3/SIXAXIS controllers where you get less than 20 hours out of your gaming sessions.

  2. DA Said,

    Thanks for the feedback Markman.

Couple questions because I have a bundle already pre-ordered and am seriously thinking about grabbing a HRAP3 SA (first fight stick purchase, BTW).

Am I able to modify the buttons and stick with this (quick disconnects, etc.)? I’ve been reading a lot and some people were saying that some of Hori’s sticks aren’t modifiable.

Do you know if there is going to be another wireless fight stick that comes with premium parts (Sanwa, Seimatsu, etc.) in the near future, like the HRAP3 SA?

Thanks and I really appreciate your feedback!

  3. Renegade Said,

    The Question is…

    Can you plug it in?

Wireless sticks/controllers only create problems for tournaments.

So it’s fine for home use, but for this to be a good tourney controller, it has to have a wired option.

I’m assuming so, since you need to charge it somehow…. but damn those cords are short.

What kind of gate does this have, square or octagonal? I’m looking for a reasonably priced octagonal gate stick to play old school arcade games on my PS3. I have a TE and an Arcade-In-a-Box stick, which are both awesome, but the square gates don’t work well on Pac-man, Dig-dug, etc; and I don’t want to change gates on my current sticks. Wireless would be convenient for that type of playing as well.

    @ Renegade

As I mentioned before, this is probably not what you want to bring to tournaments. It does not have option wired/wireless (consoles will only recognize controllers as wireless anyways, thus still having the ability to cause problems after matches since systems/controllers will still be synced even if only plugged in via wire).

The PS3 version has a dongle and the 360 version uses the built in wireless.

    @ jedomann

    Square gate.

    @ DA

Yes you can modify them. It’s going to take some work though, it isn’t an easy mod job (early HRAP sticks and Mad Catz SE/TE sticks).

Hmm just wondering since this is probably the first ever arcade stick I’ll buy. But do you think you can fit in Sanwa buttons, cause I’ve read everywhere these are the best of the best and I want to see why. If so, is there like a model number for the buttons?

well as you all know this is the most exciting thing for people who have xbox….and probably sold their ps2’s and did not want the ps3 like me….to FINALLY have a game that is rated just as good as street fighter im talking the whole series…you know hoping for more fighting games in the future like tekken tag or i forget the game with the ball…..anyways.

i have been loooking forward for this for 3 months now….and i have been dieing to know about the stick features..im not entirely interested in it after all so tomorrow i will go to my gamestop and switch my purchase to just the game.

reason being that last week i found and bought a street fighter 4 tournament stick for under $150 and also ordered some parts like the octogan gate and bat on the same day….everything was very reasonably priced to my liking maybe yall should try that out if just in case you dont already have a stick…

laterz cautious911 (ps thats my xbox gamertag hit me up if you wanna play after)

My question is will the stick work with PS2 games if you have a 60 or 20 gig PS3?

Can you use the PS3 arcade stick on the PC? Even though you have to get special drivers for it.

crap – pay the price of te stick but without sanwa parts just because there is tekken 6 logo and it’s wireless – who cares ?

wireless only creates problems – what if battery runs out in the middle of gameplay – that would piss you off.
