NorCal StrongStyle 6, Northern California’s major Tekken tournament, was held over the weekend with more than 230 players competing in Tekken 7. A tournament with strong grassroots origins, StrongStyle, made a return in 2018 after a hiatus of several years. It was last resurrected in 2014 in memory of player Patrick “ILOVEYOURMOM” Collins, who passed away during the same year due to sickle cell complications.

Despite its humble beginnings, this year’s StrongStyle was a prime destination for top international competition. Among the field were players from Korea (Saint, JDCR, JeongDing), Japan (JacKiller, BKC), and Europe (Fergus, BlackBeard, Jopelix). Top American players SpeedKicks, JimmyJTran, and JoeyFury turned up for the action as well.

StrongStyle was streamed for the first time by TeamSp00ky with support from 10/0 Productions. The high production value of the broadcast was an exciting addition to the tournament; in the past organizer Bronson Tran had chosen to forgo streaming StrongStyle in favor of focusing on the player experience at the event.

The two day event brought its fair share of upsets, with 2017 Tekken World Tour runner-up and King of Iron Fist 2016 Champion Echo Fox|Saint failing to make top 8 after losing to Jimmy Tran and Marquis “Shadow 20z” Jordan. Tran, a NorCal native, fought his way into winners finals with the crowd behind him and raced out to a 2-1 lead before falling to JDCR.
