The original Killer Instinct for the was a high water mark for in terms of in-game visuals. Through their work with pre-rendered assets, Rare was able to create impressive graphics that looks years ahead of the competition. The latest episode of Digital Foundry’s DF Retro series takes a look at just how Rare pulled this off.

Technically, a good chunk of the episode is dedicated to Killer Instinct‘s stablemate, Donkey Kong Country. That said, there’s still a lot to learn about the original Killer Instinct on arcade, SNES, Nintendo 64, and even the GameBoy due to the fact that, unlike other DF Retro episodes, people from Rare who worked on the game are here to give more input on how they made these amazing looking games.

The Killer Instinct portion of this video starts at about 38 minutes in. However a lot of what’s covered with the technology behind DKC also applies to KI.
