Mortal Kombat Finish Him

A voice familiar to any fighting game fan who grew up in the ’90s, the announcer from the original Mortal Kombat is as memorable as the over-the-top gore. But who is the mysterious man who voiced the eternal line “Finish Him!”? Well, as part of their Human Condition series, Great Big Story tracked down and interviewed the voice of Mortal Kombat, Steve Ritchie.

Already famous in the gaming world as a master pinball designer, Ritchie shared a building with the team who was working on the original Mortal Kombat. Having done several villainous voices for his own pinball machines, Ritchie was pulled into the studio to record lines for both Shao Kahn and the announcer — and the rest is video game history.

This isn’t the first FGC-related tale that Great Big Story have told, as they have also profiled the Street Fighter II legend Tomo Ohira and his sudden disappearance from the scene.
