Following its announcement back in September 2016, developer Messhof have announced that Nidhogg 2 will be coming to PS4 and PC on August 15th. This sequel builds upon the original by adding course hazards, projectile weapons and more movement options for fencers to use in battle. As well as additional mechanics, Nidhogg 2 drops the minimalist look of its predecessor and opts for a more expressive, cartoony art-style.

The reason for this art-style change is mainly due to improvements in Messhof’s animation system, which now allows the developer to animate separate body parts rather than whole character sprites. Due to this change, it’s much easier for the team to “combine things like fencing footwork, various upper-body stances, and weapon types.” With this greater freedom, Messhof was to experiment with styles and come to the goofy, Simpsons-esque aesthetic that you see now.
It takes some getting used to, but you can now customize your own character and fight in more absurd locales, thanks to Nidhogg’s new look. Pre-orders for Nidhogg 2 open on July 18th and who knows, it may win the Player’s Choice spot for next year’s Evo.
