In all the signings this past week, it’s not all sunshine and rainbows for rising esports stars in the FGC. As evidence of this, Super Smash Bros. Melee star James “Duck” Ma has been forced to leave Denial Esports after only five months with the organization.

The reason for the departure: Duck is facing two months of back pay from Denial. While he stated in a confirmation with ESPN Esports that Denial “have been very transparent about how they’ve been trying to pay me back and as of now have already paid the majority of what they owe me,” this is not the first time that the organization has landed in hot water over nonpayment of their players–the company has two other such instances in the last 18 months.

Ma will leave Denial to enter free agency.
