Looking for some high-level Street Fighter V play this weekend in a novel format for eSports? Check out the World Gaming SFV Championship event streaming live today from Toronto, Ontario, Canada. In an interesting development for the Canadian Fighting Game Community, the country’s largest movie theater company, Cineplex Entertainment, partnered with an up-and-coming organizer of eSports events, World Gaming, to run a national tournament in theaters in cities from coast-to-coast. Those who qualified by winning their regional in-theater events, or by securing a spot in the online wild-card qualifiers, will be competing today on the big-screen in Toronto for a huge prize pool.

You can check out the stream here, beginning at 11:45 PM PDT (2:45 PM EDT):

While the tournament was only open to Canadian residents, a number of well known players will be taking part, including recent CPT Top 8 competitor STDx|Blitzman (who sent TS|Sabin to losers bracket in his pools at Toryuken 5), as well as 1Up|Van who made Top 16 of the same event (eliminating TS|Sabin in the process–it was not an easy pool). Perennial Canadian Street Fighter threat Chi-Rithy will also be competing. If you haven’t heard of Chi-Rithy before, he sent EG|Justin Wong to losers in USF4 at Evolution two years back. In a recent interview I conducted with Justin Wong, the current CPT points leader, Justin said his win rate against Chi-Rithy was no better than 50%, as these two have run up against each other in tournaments for years now.

In short, this is going to be an exciting event with an amazing and novel presentation format for live spectators. The quality of play is going to be very high, especially late in the bracket, and the fact that the event is taking place in front of a live audience on the big screen in a theater will bring a lot of excitement and hype to an event that is already bound to entertain.
