Daigo Umehara announced his new sponsorship with Red Bull late Friday night, joining fellow competitors such as Olivier “Luffy” Hay and Masato “Bonchan” Takahashi in the company’s burgeoning eSports scene.
The announcement, made on Umehara’s stream “Daigo the BeasTV” and later confirmed by Red Bull, helps answer the question of just what would become of Umehara’s participation in future professional play.
Umehara’s former Mad Catz teammates, Kenryo “Mago” Hayashi and Hajime “Tokido” Taniguchi, were not resigned to the sponsor following the expiration of their contracts in March. Though Umehara was confirmed to still be under contract at the time, the financial difficulties and layoffs experienced at Mad Catz left many questions regarding just how long Umehara would remain.
An English translation of Umehara’s first book, The Will to Keep Winning, was also confirmed on stream, and will be available for purchase at Evo 2016–four years after its initial publication.
In just what capacity Mad Catz will continue to support Umehara remains to be seen, but his fans can rest easy knowing that The Beast will continue to bring the fight around the world.
