If you follow me on Twitter, you know I’m on there constantly (for better or worse), and I recently stumbled upon something interesting that I can’t get out of my head.
A couple of days ago, a Japanese player by the name of Onitchi (who plays online as onitti360) shared a rather peculair interaction from his time with Ultra Street Fighter IV.

As you can see, Akuma (presumably controlled by Onitchi) performs an uppercut on a blocking Sagat, only to focus cancel for safety and continue his pressure. The thing is, the demonic combatant is already in the air when he cancels the attack, but is still able to return to the ground.
While I’m far from the most skilled Street Fighter player around, I personally haven’t been able to replicate this technique. The best I can come up with is the game, for some strange reason, believes that Akuma is still grounded, which would explain the odd focus cancel animation that teleports him back to terra firma.
Is this a case of an online desync causing unusual animations or could we be witnessing a brand new glitch? Either way, it’s a pretty silly video that could serve as a fun opportunity to do some experimenting, so feel free to jump into the lab and let us know what you think brought this about in the comments.
