Game Developers Conference is an annual convention that gathers up all the top talent in the current gaming industry and asks them to discuss new ideas as well as talk about how they’ve gone about creating the awesome work they make. The event’s official YouTube channel has been steadily updating over the past month with recordings of this year’s talks, and one the fighting game community has been anticipating has finally arrived.
Developers from Arc System Works were present at the conference this year, and they brought along a very in-depth presentation that went over the art direction and visual design of Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN-. They discussed numerous things, from the decision to switch from 2D sprites to 3D models, the influences and goals they set out to achieve, and the various techniques they used to fully realize their ideas within the game.
If you haven’t seen it yet, the talk is a pretty interesting watch, and it’s cool to see how they took techniques from traditional anime art style and translated them into the 3D rendering techniques that led to Xrd’s jaw-dropping visuals. Give it a shot if you have even a passing interest in art and visual design in the games we play.
