Evo 2014 Registration Numbers Released; Ultra Street Fighter IV Leads the Pack with Nearly 2000 Players

By on July 1, 2014 at 2:13 am

Earlier tonight, online registration for Evolution 2014 came to a close. With no plans for taking on-site registration, tournament organizer Joey “Mr. Wizard” Cuellar was able to provide concrete figures for each game’s bracket this evening, and the numbers are just as huge as you would expect for the largest fighting game tournament in the world.

First off, the clear favorites. Capcom’s Ultra Street Fighter IV tipped the scales with almost 2000 competitors, followed by Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 at just over 1000. The top three this year is rounded out by the resurging Super Smash Bros. Melee community, who came very close to snatching away the second position.

After that, BlazBlue: Chronophantasma sees strong representation by the airdasher community, followed by (in order) Killer Instinct, King of Fighters XIII, Injustice: Gods Among Us, and Tekken Tag Tournament 2.

A complete look at the event’s registration numbers can be found below.

  • Ultra Street Fighter IV – 1979
  • Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 – 1014
  • Super Smash Bros. Melee – 970
  • BlazBlue: Chronophantasma – 508
  • Killer Instinct – 338
  • King of Fighters XIII – 319
  • Injustice: Gods Among Us – 311
  • Tekken Tag Tournament 2 – 257

Evo 2014 is scheduled for July 11-13 at the Las Vegas Hotel and Casino. Check out the event’s official website for more information.

    hello anime

  • Marvel and Smash neck and neck with tournament entrants? Either Smash is getting livelier or Marvel is dying lol

    • xeleion

      Both are happening, actually.

      • Felipe Pereira

yeah, the combination of launch of the new smash + project M getting huge on the community + melee being what it has always been is just increasing the overall hype of the community. while the recent events about marvel are indeed killing the game. all i hope is for a new versus game that will make us happy to let marvel go

    • TalesOfPersona

There’s only so much Virgil/Doom/Zero you can watch followed by Morrigan fireball spam and the occasional Wolverine.

Game’s a joke now, it used to be fun because of how crazy it was but now it’s boring. Same teams, same strategy, same glitches used to win rounds. There is almost no room for counter play if you make a single mistake. No other competitive game in the world is like that, whether it’s gaming or professional sports.

    • juggernaut1981

My God people stop. Yes Smash will inevitably overtake Marvel and snag the number two spot, but that doesn’t mean Marvel’s dead. It just means that Smash will overtake Marvel and snag the number two spot. You wanna talk about dead games, how about the fact that TTT2 is about to have to join Skullgirls and Cross Tekken as side tournaments at Evo and this is probably the last year we’ll see it on the big stage.

Marvel is embedded in EVO’s history, it will always be a main game at this tournament and every respectable major. It’s not going anywhere, no matter how far it drops in popularity.

      • Angry Joshua

Skullgirls still got the loudest (hypest) side tournament you’ll ever see!!!

      • Emezie Okorafor

SFxT got 545 entrants last year.

It had higher numbers that most other fighting games in attendance. It had almost the same numbers that the BRAND NEW Injustice had, and it beat both KOF and TTT2. Yet, those 3 games are here, and SFxT is not.

Tourney performance has nothing to do with what games get added to EVO, in case you all haven’t noticed that yet.

Tried to get some front page coverage of a recent article publicizing the SFxT side tourney, but no luck so far: http://www.geekinsider.com/interview-gaming-commentator-aaron-pinsky/

        • It’s a painfully boring game to watch because nobody plays it the right way. This is no secret. I don’t know why you pro SFxT people like to pretend there’s some conspiracy. No, it’s just boring. Deal with it.

Also 545 entrants isn’t even a reflection of it’s actually popularity, tournament performance or overall community reception last year. The vast majority of the entrants were SF4 players that thought ‘eh, I might as well join that too’.

It’s not a liked game at all and thus doesn’t showcase the excitement (hype) within the community which is an important factor in garnering new community players each year, so it’s dropped. Simple.

Nothing stopping people from running their own side tournaments, but the game is in no way deserving of a main stage slot. Look how dead the forums are for it and the “sheer number” of people are actually interested in a side tournament for it.

          • Emezie Okorafor

            TTT2 got in.

That’s all I need to say to refute everything you just said.

Half of the bulls*it reasoning you just used applies to TTT2, as well. I don’t hear people talking abut how “hype” TTT2 is, except for Tekken players. Yet, here we are.

And, this I find this hilarious: “Also 545 entrants isn’t even a reflection of it’s actually popularity,
tournament performance or overall community reception last year.”

I see, so factual, numerical evidence must give way to nebulous, bullsh*t, stream monster theory. Okay.

“Yeah, a lot of people entered last year, but none of those guys actually like the game. Someone put a gun to all 545 players heads, pulled money out of their pockets, and forced them to enter.”

            Sounds legit.

Also, SFxT isn’t in EVO. Ultra, which IS in EVO, just came out. How active do you expect the SFxT forums to be? Heck, how active are most fighting game forums on SRK, besides SF4 and Marvel?

Yet, that didn’t stop a bunch of top players from entering SFxT in May. I guess they entered because they didn’t like the game. I mean, like you said “it’s not a liked game, at all.” FACT.

          • First of all you snooty little sh*t, nobody is a stream monster here. I won’t call rank actually namedrop people, but don’t get gassed just because you’ve been preaching unchecked bullsh*t on the front page for the past 2 years or so. I’ve been part of this community WAY before you showed up and the way you are unable to understand how things actually work is proof enough.

The Tekken series has a storied 20 year+ legacy in the FGC on the whole and has been an EVO staple for 12+ years. While never reaching the heights of popularity of the SF series it’s been undeniably been an intergral part of the scene. It’s been dwindling in popularity at EVO for the last decade however for a range reasons which I won’t go into. An effort has always been to have a revision of it on the main stage inspite of that because of it’s legacy and to rep the 3D fighter arena at least in part. WHICH IS WHY IT WAS A HARD CALL WHEN THEY ACTUALLY DECIDED TO DROP IT FROM THE ROSTER THIS YEAR.

It was added back as a contigent due to pressure and high level international players who were due to come now being screwed over (*take note of that*) and given the benefit of the doubt that once done so, the players who moaned about it being dropped would actually show out in full force and support they’re game. They obviously haven’t and now they only have themselves to blame for not showing and proving going forward if it’s never on the mainstage again.

Cross Tekken is a whole different beast. It has no such legacy, just an array of problems. Despite your preachings and horrendously skewed parrotings of 545 entrants last year (look at actual numbers for it at majors NOT called EVO). There isn’t enough INDEPENDANT competitive interest in the game. There are literally whole countries, nevermind just areas or coasts, with no scene’s for it exclusively.

It’s not bringing out storied international players like Tekken is and once again the only reason it got that many players at EVO last year is because the majority of people who entered it are SF4 players that had an extra $20 to spare. Do you not remember every commentary for the whole of last year was mocking how tournaments kept being won by SF4 players that literally “didn’t even play the game” seriously? Do you even remember that Wizard actually dropped it before EVO last year due to how boring it was lol?

It was only given a chance and readded at EVO last year due to the fact ver. 2013 renew interest briefly. Interest that has since quelled (again look at attendance for it at majors NOT called EVO). Injustice, Tekken, KOF are all added EVO over SFxT because they are independant scenes that represent a unique parts of the FGC collective. Cross Tekken right now is merely an SF4 symbiote without an identity of its own. Fact.

All in all if people want SFxT at EVO next year, you and the 5 other people in the world that care about the game should take a page out of ST’s book run a side tournament and keep the scene alive organically and grow it, not piss and moan about not having the life support/crutch of the main stage any longer. But you won’t do that because that actually requires hardwork, dedication and not being handed shit freely, so you’d rather splatter fecal laced commentary across boards about how you’ve been ‘hard done by’.

            lol FOH.

          • TheRealistDMac

Well. Played. Sir. SFxT was just a third, much easier game for the SFIV players to enter, whereas without Tekken the 3D fighter crowd has nothing at all. And lol at this Emezie dude acting like tossing in $10 to play another game that runs on the same engine as the one you like requires a gun to your head.

      • Guest

TTT2 got railroaded last year thus few even bothered to train for 2014 with little hope it would get main slotted in a not shit timeslot (friday afternoon REALLY?!). Skullgirls is indie, what did you expect? If anything TTT2 will just knock SFxT out of even having a side tourney.

  • Go2hell66

    GO ANIME!!!

  • Andrew Olson

So the anime players don’t show up for anything but EVO. I see how it is…

    • I_made_this_account_to_post_th

Most anime players are either students, poor or both.

      • Andrew Olson

I think you more accurately described most of the greater FGC, not just anime.

    • Setsuna ♥

Hi I’m an anime player, I live in Florida and flight costs are like $600+ then hotel/food/registration etc and I also got a new job making it harder to get it all off.

      Sometimes shit happens man

      • TheBlackRabbit

hey are you that setsuna in the tournament that just happened?

        • Setsuna ♥

          I am ~

          • TheBlackRabbit

            ohhhhhhh awesome.

      • Erodred

I live in Indianapolis I recently attended UFGT10 but I cant afford a trip to Vegas right now

    • ARMs7777

By this logic SF players don’t show up for anything but EVO as well since we are seeing 5 to 6 times more entrance than the usual numbers you see on other majors.

This is very surprising though because not even EVO generates that much numbers for anime. There is 2 reasons why this is happening. the 30,000 pot bonus got some people to enter just to show support or the ticket to go to japan for arc revo. And reason 2 is probably the most important one, there is actual competition coming for this Evo unlike previous Evos. There is 7+ players coming form japan, and a/some representatives from Europe that showed that they can compete with america’s top players is coming.

Edit: My mistake. EVO 2013 was the first time there were some international competition. For some reason I thought it was NEC.

    • caiooa

hum…nec numbers says otherwise, but wathever

    • Erodred

I live in Indianapolis I recently attended UFGT10 and I would love to go to EVO but I cant afford a trip to Vegas right now

    What’s up TK community ?

  • Kanye West

Damn I expected Tekken to get more.

    • ReddChief78

      Lol really?

      • Guest

        *Wanted Lol

      • Kanye West

People were crying when Mr.Wizard Tekken will not be apart of this year’s line up. So I kinda expected a little more.

    • KKFulcrum

The big difference with Tekken is its not noob-friendly. So while a huge percentage of the SF or whatever players have no chance of winning, usually only the serious Tekken players enter a tournament. I’d bet there are about the same number of “elite” Tekken players as in the other games despite the smaller total number.

  • xe7en

Great number for anime! Less than 2 weeks left

  • Basura Caliente

After all the noise those Tekken fans made back in February when it was said Tekken will not be a part of this year’s line-up, you’d think they’d come out in swarms to register as soon as that decision was reversed but no, the only thing they know how to do is sit behind a pc and bark. Those Tekken numbers are atrocious! So is the game itself.

I happened to play Tekken 6 and TTT2 recently and I can’t tell you just how BIASED the game is. The Japanese characters especially Alisa and Lars are overpowered and are literally shoved down people’s throat. I have never used Alisa or Lars in my life but I already know over 90% of their command list animations. There is no corner in the game that you don’t see those two. It’s as if they’re the only new characters. Same for Mishimas. Is it any surprise that in all the Tekken tournaments we always see the same characters? It gets dry and boring really fast…and these numbers above are proof.

Tekken is in dire need of a facelift. Mishimas winning every tournament is played-out and old and it needs to stop. EVERY character must get equal shine and promotion – not just two. The game also needs to ease up on the complexity. The learning curve is too steep. Make it fun and more people will play and support it. That’s the essence of gaming afterall.

    • CHIMAsamune

      1. Alisa is low tier

      2. “knowing” the notations of a characters moves doesn’t mean you know how to use the character

      3. Lars and Alisa rarely show up in tournaments so I don’t know what you are talking about

      4. MIshimas never win tournaments because the skill required to play them effectively is beyond what most players are capable of

      5. Results for CEO had 3 Jacks (Anakin plays double jacks), Leo, Lei, Kazua, Heihachi, Jin, Jun, Steve, Lars, Alisa, Wang, Bryan, Bruce, Asuka making up the 16 characters in top 8 you’re wrong there too.

      6. Anakin won with double Jacks, a character no one talks about. Jacks beat the MIshimas, Lars, and Alisa you hate so much.

      • allytronic

        “Mishimas never win tournaments”

lol what? Maybe not in America.

Everybody knows why TTT2 is parte of the lineup this year, Namco bought its way in. The game is garbage. Tekken has reached a level of saturation and goofiness so high that not even Tekken players support the game anymore. It needs a complete overhaul.

        • Jr Junior

LOL at the “Namco bought its way in” comment……either Namco is very cheap or very smart for buying their way into Evo….but im going with the latter….as renting a booth at E3 to showcase new games (ahem TxSF, etc) would be around $300k or more….buying your way into a sub-genre based event for a 10th of the cost of booth renting a E3 plus adding a pot bonus to the game’s entry from that buy-in is waaaaaay more economical on Namco’s part then showcasing shit at a 10th of development cost……if anyone’s winning…its Namco by far….

      • Basura Caliente

You misunderstood most of what I said:

        1. “Lars and Alisa rarely show up in tournaments so I don’t know what you are talking about” – Are you kidding me? In which rock have you been hiding? It’s not rarely it’s mostly. It’s nearly impossible to find a tourney with either of them missing. Texas showdown, CEO, Tekken crash, Tekken strike, evo , scr etc. The list is endless

        2. I didn’t say I know how to use Alisa. I said I already know over 90% of what she can do because she is OVERUSED. She is everywhere. For example stage 6 in Tekken 6 arcade mode her or Lars are ALWAYS the opponents (wtf). That’s some serious bias in a video game.

        3. Mishima’s winning all the tekken tournaments refers to them winning the tournaments in the game’s story like Jin in Tekken 3 and 5, etc

        • Jesus

Seeing an AI perform an incomplete moveset in arcade mode does not equal watching what an actual person can do when playing said character effectively, and if you have a problem with what are essentially the main characters of a game winning fabricated story tournaments, that’s fine until you use it as a reason that it hurts the competitive multiplayer scene, where most people who enjoy the game could give a fuck less. If you believe in the reasons you’ve just stated, then the only reason he’s misunderstood you is because you’ve misunderstood tournament fighters in general.

          • Basura Caliente

You think I haven’t watched actual people playing with Alisa or Lars before? …

            The proper question would be…

Which Tekken fan on this planet has not Watched an Alisa or Lars match before?

            LOL what a joke.

I’ve seen so many humans spam Alisa’s db+3 in matches that I now lose some brain cells each time they do it.

You Tekken tards can bark as loud as you want still does not change the fact that Tekken has become stale and a two-character borefest. It aint fun anymore. Apparently I’m not the only one who thinks that. In the biggest fighting game competition on earth it barely has any players…and TTT2 is not even up to two years old.

Harada has probably realised that too seeing as TR is more like the enjoyable Tekken of old.

    • Kanye West

The only place Mishimas win tournaments are South Korea.

    • XaviIniesta

Alisa is low tier on every tier list I’ve seen in TTT2.
And technically, Alisa Bosconovtich is Russian since her creator/father is Russian. Though she looks very anime, so I guess you can consider her Japanese that way.

    • Jr Junior

trashing a fighting game because YOU have a problem with a few matchups DOES NOT make the game trash or garbage…thats just a personal problem with you…..first off uf3 with Lars is hop kick punishable…..i know thats what your bitching about because thats a move thats most scrubs and decent Lars players like to spam….Alisa by far is not “overpowered” and is very string heavy so a great deal of her movelist is predictable…bait and punish…talking shit about Tekken needing a facelift is hilarious as fuck when i could clearly spit, piss, and shit on SF4 or SF period and its corny ass target player base…..for 1. SF4 is a hybrid of SFEX and ST utilizing Guard Attack or rather “Surprising Blow” or “Hard Attack” in Japan from EX3 without meter usage….Seth character is a ripoff of “Ace” introduced EX3 with the sonic boom, shoryuken, and piledriver moved minus the editing of the character’s movelist….ST because of Super Art system without Super canceling except for just supers alone…and most importantly….shitty ass Absolute Guard is present….there is not free guard system present making chip damage guaranteed…LAME!!!! its funny how Joey Cuellar said the dumbest shit about Tekken using a “tired and outdated format” when Capcom rehashed the same garbage for 6yrs straight with weak ass updates…talk about recycling!!!! lets count it: SF4(2008) or Vanilla as Fanboys like to call it, SSF4(2010) or Chocolate(damn dont this sound like Google with Android updates? -_-) SSF4AE(2010/2011) and SSF4AEV2012(2012) and USF4(2014)…. hmmm….and thats all arcade releases from 2008 to now….lets see…Tekken 6(2007) TTT2(2011) and TR(2013)….Namco 3 games Capcom 1 game 4 updates…sounds like SF2…WW Hyper CE Super and ST….and Tekken is “tired and outdated”? LOL the only revolution to ever push the series is SF3 which has 2 updates and a never released 3rd update but that update never came to be because fanboys wanted to keep pushing and supporting a “tired and outdated format”….fuck outta here fangirl

    • RomanceHD

“Mishimas winning every tournament is played-out and old” ,

Oh I’m sorry it’s not like we see that in other game with a certain team winning majority of the time *cough* MORRI/DOOM *cough* but hey what do I know. I mean in American Tekken there aren’t even that many Misihma players to begin with. Fab – Bob/Mig, Speedkicks – Jin/Hwo, HOA – Jack/Pjack , Inkog – Bry/Bob , JFJ – Law/Yoshi , Naps Bry/Drag .. and so fourth I mean I don’t even know where you got your info Mishima’s were winning tournaments even across seas they aren’t, at least paired together. As far as Alisa goes, a small percentage of players in the US and across seas even play her, she isn’t as baindead as she was in Tekken 6. All of this idiocy you spewed isn’t even backed up by anything, it’s just a “Hey I played a couple of Tekken games and I think I’m a pro” comment. After reading this, it only showed me you don’t know anything about Tekken, and by your credibility I bet you’re one of those players who instead of learning the match up just continues to bitch about characters being cheap.

    • TheRealistDMac

Wasn’t Bob SSS+ tier in Tekken 6? Weren’t there like random Ogre and Jinpachi (Ok family-wise he’s a Mishima but he doesn’t play like one) players in the top 8 last year? Isn’t Bruce super high-tier in this game? Nope. Lars and Alisa and Mishimas. NEVER see other characters.

Also don’t let the Guilty Gear players hear you say the game would be better if you made everything easier to do lol. Just because you can’t win every match with a well-timed Zero or Dr. Doom infinite doesn’t mean the game has to be dumbed down.

  • Darklurkr23

KI and Injustice don’t even break 500? Sad face. Then again Im not surprised w/ KI FGC is sooo poor asking for money to go to events. It’s not like they don’t know the tournament is going to happen a year ahead of time.

    • nchoun

For KI, maybe its because of its exclusivity to the X1.

      • BulletToothTeddy

Ultra is pretty much exclusively played on 360 consoles. The problem with kI numbers is the lack of fight sticks and the inability to use a CronusMax so you can use your 360 stick on XBone.

      • FinchoMatic

I think it says a lot that KI’s numbers are higher than the games below it considering they would have a much bigger following and more time to gather their community together than KI has.

This is very exciting in the near and far future of the game. I certainly hope there is a tease of the next character like they did for Thunder last year.

        Here’s hoping 🙂

    • disqusdatbra

A mediocre game exclusive to a terrible console, I’d say those numbers are weirdly high considering that.

      • Rockz

What exactly is mediocre about KI?

      • leingod

any reasons for saying that? Or is it just plain stupid brand fanboyism behind those words?

        • juggernaut1981

It sounded good in his head but didn’t realize it would expose him as a retard when he posted it.

  • I_made_this_account_to_post_th

Those people only care about the story mode though, I wouldn’t call them “players”. More like readers.

  • TheBlackRabbit

    • juggernaut1981

Dat new Persona will take it’s place next year. They try to keep at least one shout out to anime games.

      • TheBlackRabbit

well guilty gear is coming so that will be the one i think.

  • TheBlackRabbit

    • I couldn’t agree more to this statement.

    • Luisito

More like amazing sense of humour.

      • TheBlackRabbit

i shall clap for you sir.

  • 0bscura

reading these comments is like getting punched in the face with stupidity.

  • Ace

BlazBlue fanbase cumming out in full force this year.

    • TheBlackRabbit

      coming…..plz use coming….lol

      • Eric Nguyen

No, he’s right. And you’re right. “Cumming” and “coming” are equally correct in this situation.

        • TheBlackRabbit

          LOL well i suppose XDDD

  • Wow. I didn’t expect that many Blazblue players. Nice.

  • Guest

For the record there are 2 Costa Rica players going there as well 🙂

  • BulletToothTeddy

So cute, all the Ultra players who think their scrubby online game is going to get them anywhere in the tournament setting.

    • Remster

Yah I hate it when people try to have fun.

      • Bobby E. Adams

At least Im not the only one who hates that…how dare they

    • leingod

… aaaand that attitude is what scares players away from fighting games.

    • yeah everyone who can’t win evo shouldn’t go. god forbid people just want to go to vegas and meet people they share a hobby with/friends they’ve known for year and have a good time.

  • FinchoMatic

Biggest tournament for KI yet. HYPE

    • leingod

Yeah, I’m really glad KI is getting some love. I really wanna see more season 2 content soon!

  • Dreiko

Blazblue is a good game. I’m glad it’s higher than ever despite being ps3 exclusive and “too anime” for some people. I hope GGXrd will be just as big if not bigger next year.

  • Pedro Victor

Aw, no Persona. At least Ultimax will be playable.

  • Atmapalazzo

Divekick is OP. No fighting game can/has/will beat it.

  • TheRealistDMac

Look at some of these comments lol… maybe nobody showed up for Tekken because they were afraid the 2D elitists would shun them.
