Modders Add a Fighting Game Twist to the Combat of Space Exploration Title Starbound

If you haven’t yet had a chance to don your pixelated space suit and head for deepest reaches of digital space, you’re truly missing out! Starbound offers players a means to explore a vast and terrifying universe through the use of sandbox-style play and a trusty space-faring vessel. The game combines item crafting, structure building, RPG elements, and an array of planets so vast that exploring them all just isn’t possible; Chucklefish intends the game to eventually be able to generate 422.22 quadrillion planets.

Until now, combat in Starbound has remained fairly simple: point and click to swing a pixelated sword or dagger, fire a bow, or zap an enemy with a laser rifle. When modders SuperMandrew and LowestFormOfWit showed off their newest mod earlier this week on the Starbound community forums, that all changed.

Their mod, aptly named “Way of the Warrior,” allows players access to a tech item for their characters. When equipped, players can use keyboard inputs to toss Hadoukens and Shoryukens, building meter for the all-powerful Shinkuu Hadouken super, complete with a super flash and a change to the background of the current location in the game.

The controls feel pretty good. Anyone who has ever played a fighting game on keyboard will immediately feel at home using the WASD keys to execute Ryu’s signature attacks, and there’s plenty of fun to be had tearing mountains apart with Shinkuu Hadoukens. Who needs mining picks?

Starbound is currently in beta, but pre-purchase of the title allows access to the full game in its current state as well as after the official release. You can check out the mod here if you already own the game and want to throw in some cool new fighting game-related content.

More information on Starbound can be found on its official website.
