Anime Adaptation of Arcade Romantic Comedy High Score Girl Greenlit

Here’s a bit of interesting news for Street Fighter fans who also happen to like anime. The February issue of Square Enix’s Big Gangan magazine is set to announce that an anime adaptation of Rensuke Oshikiri’s 2010 manga High Score Girl has been greenlit.

The series is described as a “90s arcade romantic comedy” focusing on the relationship between a boy named Haruo and the titular “High Score Girl” Akira. The former is a sixth grader who spends too much time in the arcades, one day receiving the shock of his life when he encounters his classmate Akira. Their relationship begins when she destroys him in a game of Street Fighter II.

More details on the anime adaptation are expected when Big Gangan is released later this week, so stay tuned.

D3v has worn many hats within the general fighting game community. The self proclaimed "Asian white boy" from the Philippines has done everything from arcade stick modification to match commentary. When not writing for Shoryuken's front page, D3v spends part of his time running tournaments in the Philippines, including the country's biggest fighting game event, Manila Cup.

I can’t wait to not care about it once it comes out.
Art style sucks, premise is stupid, gaming & romance is a dumb combination even with comedy thrown in, and the bulk of Japanese humor stops being funny once you watch anime for about a year (assuming you’re not easily amused and you’ve allowed your sense of humor to develop over time, which 90% of internet/anime-addicted dorks have issues with).

Just another painful example that Japan’s best years are far behind them. They don’t even put effort into drawing or scripting anymore; just hoping that catering to geeks, virgins, and weirdos will get them by. Let me know when they get back to making hero stories that don’t involve sadistic main characters, over-the-top fanservice, school children, and low-effort style & animation.
