Capcom Looking for Game Designer and Programmer for New Fighting Game

By on October 24, 2013 at 12:06 am

Yoshinori Ono recently took to Twitter to drop a tiny bit of information regarding Capcom and a future project. The short message mentions that the company is looking to put a team together for a new fighting game, based out of Japan in either Tokyo or Osaka.

He went on to say that they have not yet decided on a platform, as development is just about to get underway.

As with most Ono messages, these are rather vague and could mean quite a number of things. Are they moving forward with a new Rival Schools title? Could Darkstalkers be making another resurgence? A completely new franchise? Or is it something more anticlimactic, like an iOS title?

Feel free to let us know what you hope they move onto after Ultra Street Fighter IV in the comments below.

It doesn’t matter which fighting game they are making as long as it’s a new fighting game for next gen consoles including PC.

    • Oni Ishida

Every console should get every fighting game next gen.

Fighting games are the most competitive games out there, and competition is universal, no matter what system you play.

So please Capcom, put whatever this is, on every platform.
PS4, XBone, Wii U, PC, and arcade.

      Also, new Darkstalkers… MAKE IT.

    • k.b.a.

i’d say it quite matters. unless you’d be happy with a ftp red earth sequel.

      i know i would but…

      • Vesperion

With the only next gen fighting games on ps4 being Divekick, and Injustice……I’ll take anything right now

        • Emezie Okorafor

      • JINXHAND

Real talk, that would be dope!!! Maybe not the f2p part though…

      • ReoAyanami

        Actually, I would too. 😉

  • BlackMasamune

    Capcom vs SNK 3
Capcom All Stars or Street Fighter X All Capcom.

    • vastreammonster

      Capcom vs. SNK 3
      Street Fighter Alpha 4
      Rival Schools
      Street Fighter 5

  • pootnannies

    something brand new i hope

  • Rahavic

    Rival Schools.

  • Zachary Ortiz

An actually good fighting game with zero Ono and Nitsuma involvement.

  • Yan Zhao

Whatever it is, it better be damn good to get them out of the red. Better not be an iOS game.

  • Wxrds

If I see an x-factor in this fg project, somebody is gonna get slapped

  • Kasuya

The new game is DLC(Do Love Capcom’s)DLC(DownLoad Characters) All Stars! All of Capcom’s previous characters that were DLC for all their games are now the main characters that are already in the game! The catch is that all characters that would normally be in the game, like Ryu, are DLC!

    • Felipe Pereira

and as always, they will aready be in the disc

  • $17468069

Capcom wanna make a new game oh sounds goo… oh wait I’m gonna sneeze.. ah….. ahh.. aaaabullshit… sounds all right.

  • k.b.a.

    New fighter.

CVS3. Rival Schools. Final Fight MMO. SF: EX vs 1 ft the Dolls. Star Gladiator.
    Capcom All Stars.

Cyberbots with an Armored Warriors mode.
New Battle Circuit featuring Captain Commando’s team.

Marvel VS Capcom: the B-Sides with a balance between all three.
Marvel Infinite Conflict with DLC out of the ass expanding on the Heroes and Heralds team mechanics. 2v2
Marvel Revenge of the Atom heavily featuring mutants 1v1 who didn’t return from MVC2, were created afterwards, and need a spot. Daken vs Havok anyone?

    • Richard N

Didn’t Capcom lose the rights to use Marvel stuff though?

      • James Joseph

Yes but they said if people showed interest to marvel they most likely could get it back.

        • k.b.a.

i just hope they work on something other than just marvel vs capcom 3. that’s for my fans motivations. i’m sure wolverine mastah could explain the nuances of X-Men:COTA, Marvel WotG MVC1 being 2v2 vs the 3v3’s [the original cross assault!?] hell if they diversify the cast enough they could show off a ton of new X-Men, give less feasible/’popular’ characters a chance [Black Panther, Daredevil, S. Girl], and hype up that shield nonsense they feel like churning out.

maybe make a marvel related game where you can’t tod?

          • Richard N

Screw it, just have Capcom do a DCU Vs as well. Then the circle will be complete.

          • k.b.a.

forgot they need a separate all megaman fighter

better than lost planet or sengoku imho… i’m sorry i’m really just gonna be butthurt forever about dead onimusha

          • ssj3gokou24

            onimusha blade battlers? lol.

          • k.b.a.

let sakurai work on it for one 3 days weekend
            digital gold

        • Tonton Ramos

Then how about MVC4 on PS4, Xbox One, WiiU, and PC. Oh wait it’ll be on another 10 years like KH3 (PS5 and Xbox Infinity announced already) 🙁

I just hope the wait isn’t that long due to hype for Avengers: Age of Ultron and X-men Days of Future Past. Also taking notes from Project X Zone, SSB4 and Mighty No. 9 and give the fans a fighting blue megaman they deserve.

          • k.b.a.

how can you even compare kingdom hearts? they were ridiculous from the jump with that milking yes, but they at least put out something every year or so

  • Go2hell66

  • Anjon

    Mummies Alive

  • BabyChooChoo

Give me Darkstalkers or give me death!

    • dejavu2222

can’t you fap to Felicia and Morrigan on the internet already?

      • k.b.a.

fapping is primarily what KI is for it seems.
i went to an orchid board on the KI website and that’s what most of them seemed to be adamant about

  • dejavu2222

Capcom vs SNK 3 or bust

    • Petran79

the way things are now, they have to buy SNK first

      • Rob Toohey

despite now it looks, Playmore is actually doing better than Capcom right now thanks to funds from their pachinko/pachislot division.

        • dejavu2222

and of course releasing GOOD games like King of Fighters 13.

          • Rob Toohey

Pachinko and Pachislot games make far more money than standard arcade games, but i can agree with you on that.

      • dejavu2222

        uh…what? Yeah, okay.

      • k.b.a.

oh that’d be so grand… until you realize it wouldn’t and now instead of SNK favorite games and characters not returning for dire financial reasons, they’d be not returning in favor of a gritty 3d reboot

    • Justin Archer

i’d rather see SNK do the artwork.

      • MrJechgo

In that case, you would like SNK vs Capcom Chaos 2… minus the “Chaos”, with KOF13-styled sprites for the Capcom characters.

        • dejavu2222

so EPIC!!! This is exactly why I want to see Capcom vs SNK return, because SNK would make another SNK vs Capcom as well, so if Capcom fails again, then SNK will deliver.

          • MrJechgo

Well, yeah… I don’t expect 80 characters in total, but still, it would be cool.
However, I heard that Capcom didn’t like how SNK handled their last crossover, that card game on DS, with its marketing and game-breaking glitch.

          • dejavu2222

Where did you hear this? Please provide a link. I hound any CvS news and have never encountered this.

          • MrJechgo

It’s not a CvS news per se. I’ve read a comment on Capcom-Unity that Capcom didn’t like their last cooperation with SNK. That’s why they didn’t work with them and went with Namco for SFxT instead.

  • Graham Shryock

    Whatever it is…F2P.

  • Unemployment Master

Do not do this to my heart Capcom.
    Please be trolling Ono.

  • Mista X

I really hope it’s a TOTALLY new IP.

It would also be nice to see them adopt a F2P model (more MOBA-esque and less Tekken Revolution, though) and a PC release alongside consoles.

Also on my wishlist, more expanded features catering to supporting the fgc- in game stream tools, tourney mode (like what Skullgirls has), fully fleshed out training (once again, like Skullgirls), good systems tutorials and a long challenge mode, et cetera.

I’d also like for Capcom to just get on the GGPO boat already.

    • MrJechgo

“New IP” has become a double-edged sword, I’m afraid… Yes, it may work, but also No, it may also fail to attract the mass and instead alienate it.
A returning IP would be profitable because it is familiar to players, so they know what to expect from the moment the game is announced and not when the game is released.

Capcom needs to seriously reconcile with Arika and get that EX4 pushed out to consoles/PC A.S.A.P.!!!

  • Rafael

Although I love Alpha I want something that doesn’t have street fighter all over it with the same art direction.

  • J.D SRK

By now you probably already realized that noobs will say ANYTHING is too complicated for them, so please stop catering to them.

    • MrJechgo

While I agree that most of you hate those, there could be a way to add huge and powerful super moves without calling them “comeback mecanics”.
Maybe they should try having leveled super moves like in UMvC3 or TvC, a.k.a. super moves that require more meter to use in exchange of higher damage. They could also have the super meter used for EX moves, bursts and other stuff, adding micro-management of that meter into play.
BTW, BlazBlue doesn’t have any comeback mecanic, and it works fine. You only get 2 bursts, or now 1 with a long recovery time that also counts as your Overdrive gauge, and if you can do your Astral Heat, that means that your opponent or both of you are almost dead. I don’t call that much of a comeback mecanic if you would have won without it anyway.

      • Jolly Green

I think that the whole comeback mechanic in regards to these things, are in reference to something that rewards you for taking a beating, or loosing. For example, XFactor becomes stronger as you loose characters, get beat down, while the person giving the beat down and is keeping all their characters alive, still maintains a weaker XFactor. Something like a burst meter, which both characters have equal access to, is different when one person does not get an advantage or better/stronger burst or whatever simply for playing bad and loosing, without at least compensating for the better players efforts with an at least equal or greater advantage of sorts.

    • Rahavic

As many problems as the game has, SFxT really has no comeback mechanic, and look at how everyone has received that game. Hell, it doesn’t even have a way to make moves safe by using meter for the most part besides ending a magic series into a safe EX, but if you DP your boned unless it’s a punish or something.

Also, I owned SFxT for the first week it was out and traded it in, so this isn’t even coming from from SFxT fanboy or supporter, just saying.

  • Aentik Sparda Ten-no

well i think nom mvc 4 but if they do a proper Rival schools, SNK vs C 3 , tatsunoko vs capcom 2 or my personal fav Street ifghter alpha 4 would be awesome anyway hope its a sweet game!! make another one for portables damn!! u only have ports no proper only for portable games!!! ¬¬

  • MrJechgo

SF5… in 2018… 4-5 years of development seems like a good idea.
Then again, DS4 is heavily requested, so…

    • dejavu2222

No, DS4 is not HEAVILY requested, that’s just an illusion.

Capcom vs SNK 3 is the most heavily requested, but Cashcom doesn’t smell enough $$$$

      • MrJechgo

I’m interpreting “requested so badly by Ono” as “heavily requested” at this point.

    sprites plz

    • MrJechgo

      Highly doubt it…

Spriting has become more costly in both time, money and resources these days, because the sprites have to be much bigger, “thanks” to HD and with more animation frames… times the frames for each animation.

A 3D model is modeled, textured and rigged once and the animation can be made, even while the model and/or the texture are being worked on.

Please note that Skullgirls, BlazBlue, P4A and KOF12 all started with a rather small roster before expanding them. A 2D fighter would means less characters in the roster and the possibility of a sequel… or DLC.

Beside, you can be a bit more expressive with 3D models than with 2D sprites.

      • FOHBUS

i see your point. but cant capcom always reuse all the sprites from older games?

        • MrJechgo

They could… but quality-wise, huh… it’s gonna be crappy, like Capcom Fighting Evolution crappy. Even CvS2 had some questionable ideas. They remade EVERY SNK character in their own Capcom/SFA style, but only remade Ryu, Ken, M. Bison, Eagle, Maki and Kyosuke. At this point, I beg to ask why Capcom just didn’t remade every character sprite on their own side to make the art direction equivalent. P.S. Morrigan’s sprite looked VERY out of place there.

If it was for handhelds (3DS/Vita), maybe it could pass since the screen’s resolution doesn’t demand sprites to be that huge, like SF3 3rd Strike would look decent on them. However, for home consoles and PCs, they need to take in account the HD format. For instance, KOF12-13 sprites are like 5 or 6 times bigger than the older sprites. It means more details, more animation follow-throughs, more… everything.

ASW’s games are slightly different, because GG’s sprites are slighty smaller than BlazBlue’s sprites, but again, GG and BB started small, only to grow as the games got released. Furthermore, for BB, ASW used 3D models that got used to be re-sprited and roto-scoped over them.

I’m completing a baccalaureat in 3D animation soon and after working with many 3D modelers, I can see why they would go that way. Animating a model is just a series of commands, while in 2D, it’s a series of commands PLUS a series of sprites to load. A 3D model, like I explained, can be rigged and animated as soon as the base mesh is completed; the texture can be added later on and your animations won’t be affected at all. In 2D, well, if you missed a detail… you’re screwed, because each sprite has to be changed. Ouch…

Also, in 3D, a lot of effects can be done with the game engine, like lighting and physics. In 2D, you have to manually add the shadows and highlights and have to make every loose end, like hair, belts and clothing, look natural. That’s additional work.

That’s why I keep thinking that 3D will likely be used, because 2D has become more complicated to do. Not that I don’t like 2D games, but it,s unfortunately a reality I have to deal with now.

          • ForteWily

I am not sure that it’s something that is comparable. Mostly out of the expectancy of the user.
I prefer sprites myself, but that is about as pricey as what you get in 3D these days, simply because it’s; 1) A lost-art, meaning that finding someone that can make sprites is going to be hard to do… since most don’t these days; And 2) An issue with talented art, good art is something that doesn’t come cheaply. It never has.

That said, as much as it is easier to work with, I am not sure that 3D model work is all that cost effective. Street Fighter, ranges in the millions to make at this point… and I do question the wisdom of Xrd’s use of Unreal’s engine (impressive as it is).

Which comes to the point of, how does one make a game like fighter that is somewhat cost effective. I think that the answer to that is this… I don’t think that gamers can (or should) expect a game to be made at the level of the usual AAA development stream for long. And the only ones that could are bigger companies in the industry. What is needed is a game of lesser, but enjoyable quality on the visual end of the scale.

    • Luisito

Nowadays you can make 3D models look 2D. Just look at GG Xrd.

      • King of Fighters 12+13 was also modeled in 3d, then rendered, then redrawn as sprites.

  • MrJechgo

    Since everyone is doing wishlists…
    – Capcom All-Stars
    – Street Fighter All-Stars (like a game with EVERY SF character)
    – Darkstalkers 4
    – Sengoku Basara X2, Capcom version (using the UMvC3 engine)
    – Cyberbots x Tech Romancer x Lost Planet x Steel Battalion x Monster Hunter (screw it, I want a game similar to Pacific Rim with 4 “factions” fighting huge monsters. Beside, Jin Saotome using Blodia to fight Rathalos would be epic)
    – Rival Schools 3
    – Plasma Sword 3
    – Power Stone 3
    – Red Earth 2
and I just ran out of ideas… XD

    • Rahavic

Be as nostalgic as you wanna be about Power Stone, but in the end it was a party game. I mean hell, make it again, but at best it’ll have a niche group of people playing it at BYOC and side tourneys, and I loved that game too. I still have the little airplane side game on a VMU I think from Dreamcast lol

I ust think with the little amount of resources they supposedly have, almost any of the other titles you mentioned (mostly just RS3 and DS4 though imo) are more worth the money being spent on it to make.

  • Eric Wiley

“The answer is Capcom All”………..This has to be Capcom All-Stars, right?

  • I’d be very happy to see a Final Fight fighting game. Maybe throw in some Street Fighter cameos.

  • Skillionaire

Ultra Super Street Fighter IV arcade edition 2015.

  • Nomad

Most likely it will either be Rival Schools 3 or the rumored Darkstalkers. Personally I’d really like to see Rival School’s 3, but I’d also be extremely happy to see the return or Darkstalkers. So I guess it’s a win win for me if it’s between these two games.

  • ssj3gokou24

only way to spark interest is capcom all stars (feat. characters we haven’t seen in awhile……power stone perhaps) or an attack on titan fighter.
