Namco Bandai just annoucned during their panel at San Diego Comic-Con that they are planning to release an updated version of Soulcalibur 2. Titled Soulcalibur II HD Online, this game will feature all the modes from the original PlayStation 2 version of the game, and will of course include a special appearance by Tekken’s own Heihachi Mishima. And, much like the name suggests, it will include full online functionality.

Many of you may remember that Soulcalibur 2 originally featured exclusive guest characters depending for each console it was released on (Link from Legend of Zelda was included on the Gamecube, while the Xbox version featured Spawn). When asked whether or not those two fighters would be appearing in this port alongside Heihachi, newly-promoted producer Masaaki Hoshino said that they had nothing to reveal at this time and fans will have to wait for further announcements.

Soulcalibur II HD Online is set to release this fall for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

  • Raoni Marques

Great news! Hmm, maybe they’ll have a special guest for 360 too? I don’t think they can use Spawn again unless they make a new deal with Todd McFarlane/Image Comics

  • sibarraz

I Don’t own a WiiU, but I think that namco could do some good money with the gamecube version in said console

    • Ricardo Rico

I agree, i remember being annoyed b/c everyone in my city played Link in the GC version

      • Covarr

Of course they did. Link was severely overpowered.

        • Gethoff Mahfacebuk

Link was universally considered the worst or next to worst character in the game in the competitive community. His game was full of holes, and every one of his “mixup” strings could be easily guarded both ways with just a few reps of practice.

Link was NOT good in SC2. It’s just a shame he won’t be in the game this time, he’d get EXPOSED online.

Heihachi on the other hand, now THAT guy was really strong. Big damage, great punish tool similar to Greek sisters, incredible mixup with Hellsweeps. He had everything he needed to win and then some.

          • Exy

I think this game would still sell on Wii U without Link. Then again, anything would these days.

  • “set to release this fall for PlayStation 2 and Xbox 360.” lel

  • Bennijin

Ooh, nice! And Heihachi makes the most sense of guests to bring back since Link is Ninty and Spawn would require the license. Better than them bringing back no guests.

I had it on GameCube and my brother had it on Xbox, so Heihachi’s the only SC guest I never played as. That’ll be nice to experience.

    Also, Necrid.

  • CrissCross87

Best selling version of Soul Calibur 2 was on Gamecube, but still no Wii U release?

  • Chooch

    Three words:

    Day one buy

  • soakrates

Y’all better hope and pray you don’t run into someone who knows how to step-guard and 2G, or you will quickly start wondering why you thought this game was so great.

    • Barry Driffield

Awww why did you have to ruin it lulz

    • Gethoff Mahfacebuk

SC3 Arcade remake would have been more exciting for me, but I get why they picked SC2. It’s still a fun game, we can’t act like we’re NOT gonna buy it. Just would have liked SC3 Arcade Edition more.

      • blackavengre

With that updated Hwang I never got to play… 🙁

      • Farpenoodle

SC3:AE is amazing. It’s a real pity most people didn’t get to experience it. Especially high level play.

    • Gojira Twit

      ♪The More You Know♪

    • RazingPhoenix

      Talim and Link, that’s why.
And the story mode was really cool. I think it would be a cool game for trophy/achievement monsters.

    • Sir Fratley

      Even so, it’s still a great game…

  • Dandy J

no thanks i had my fill of doing safe moves then hitting a direction and guard

  • Smashbro29

The one with the worst guest and there’s not even a PC version! How lame.

    • Ronldbx6

Wow, I saw that coming. I knew people would starting crying because it’s not the gamecube version “Oh no, Link’s not in the game, then I’m not buying it!”

      • Smashbro29

Even the green X-box dude would have been better. It is literally the worst guest.

        • Nael

Spawn was the Xbox guest character, Necrid (who was designed by Spawn’s creator) was in all three versions.

      • cmdrdredd

People who say something like that simply are not Soul Calibur fans. People who have followed the series from the beginning don’t need guest characters to be happy with the gameplay mechanics.

        • Ronldbx6

Right, like the whole game is based on the appearance of 1 guest character.

    • ReddChief78

Why would you think PC would get this lol

      • Smashbro29

I just want it to have everything and I stay optimistic.

    • Gethoff Mahfacebuk

Heihachi wound up being the strongest of the guest characters, and it wasn’t even close. Link wound up being flat bottom tier garbage, arguably worse than YunSeong. Go figure.

      • Smashbro29

They were all banned anyhow, at least Link was awesome.

    • Louis Lam

Why would you be waiting on a PC version of any fighting game ever

      • Smashbro29

Because the PS3 and 360 are on their way out and the PC is not being phased out until people stop using Windows. If a game is on PC it lasts forever in a sense.

        • Joel Anderson

That doesn’t equal more console games on pc.

  • Bob Obb

I loved this game but this is lame. I’d rather they fix SC5 or talk about the new game.

    • AriesWarlock

I was waiting for a balance for SC5, but at least we won’t have to hear people’s SC2 nostalgia diatribe anymore when talking about other SC’s.

      • madnis

“madnis from the soul cailbur forums” Like me? I still haven’t bought sc5. and everything I said would happen to this sc5, did happen to sc5. SC2 is still the best SC in my opinion and it was the most competitive, glitches and all. everything post 2 was just downhill gameplay wise in my opinion. sc2 was also the most fun. but don’t let me start…

  • SolidSonicTH

Not my…FAVORITE Soul Calibur game but a welcome move nonetheless.

Better have all that extra content, though. They stripped out all the fun from Soul Calibur 360 when they released it back in the day.

  • ExHaseo

I was really hoping for a Wii U version with Link. Oh well. :/

  • samirerre

they should add few guest characters from samurai showdown,
i personally would love me some billy kane in a soul caliber game.

    • Gethoff Mahfacebuk

You go ahead and work out those licensing issues and come back to us with that lol

      • samirerre

snk is really high this year letting thiere characters appear in other games,so why not.

  • David Curry

  • Crow Winters

I seriously cannot wait to make scrubs cry with post-GI G2. This is one of those games that everyone thinks they’re good at because they mashed with Link once.

    • Gethoff Mahfacebuk

I’m maining Heihachi online dude lol a LOT of people are not ready for this mess

Flawed game in a lot of ways but still fun.

      • Crow Winters

OMG. Pick Heihachi, do 9KK until you win because no one knows how to actually beat it. Watch them crumble. I found that glitch way back when and never had the opportunity to use it since console exclusives were banned. A whole new era of blowing people up with glitches. I can’t wait.

        • cmdrdredd

          Unless they adjust it out

  • Rothion

Better than SCV’s trashness. I’ll take it.

    • d3v

That is, until you realize just how broken step G is.

      • Rothion

Still better than dumbing the game down – and having meters.

        Welcome back step G.

        • James Farrar

Step G was really broken, but meter in a Namco FG is the epitome of wtf. It DOES NOT belong, and is the total ruination of the series.

  • defur

Please keep extra vs team battle. Don’t know why the newer SC got rid of that mode ?! Me and my friend still play it from time to time and it is still fun as hell !!!

  • Kaihedgie

Great, it’s the versions no one really cares about :V

    • David Curry

More people care about SC2 than those who care about the whiny SC4+ community that holds bitter grudges against everyone in the FGC that they come into contact with

      • Kaihedgie

Wow, way to miss my comment.

I’m specifically referring to the console versions

  • shinjojin

    SWEET!!!! 8D

  • 1338h4x

No Wii U, no Link, no buy.

    • Gethoff Mahfacebuk

I am hoping and praying against all common sense that they figure out the licensing somehow so that all you Link scrubs can come online and get exposed, that character was SO BAD.

      • 1338h4x

I just want him to be in there is all, he was a pretty iconic part of the game that shouldn’t be omitted. And I want to play it on my Wii U, we need more fighters anyway!

        • cmdrdredd

The WIiU just isn’t popular enough and doesn’t have a good enough online system.

          • 1338h4x

Wii U isn’t popular enough -> doesn’t get ports -> isn’t popular enough -> doesn’t get ports… Considering how big Link in SC2 was on GC, I would imagine it’d be a fairly decent draw to help turn the system’s library around.

And the online system is just fine IMO, what do you think is missing?

  • Skudd Stevens

Great. Now do SC3HD and I’ll have a reason to care.

  • cmdrdredd

If you want to play as Link you should be playing Smash Bros not Soul Calibur. I don’t care how butthurt you are, Link is not what makes Soul Calibur great. So get over yourselves and quit being babies.

    • Louis Lam

Don’t tell what I should be playing. GC SC2 Link was terrible but fun.

      • E_Tap

        Dat from behind throw! “YEE-HAW”
(Or one of the side throws, the one where he whips his sword like he’s riding Epona, never stopped being funny)

      • cmdrdredd

And the WiiU sales are too low and the online play not good enough for Namco to release on that platform.

Anyone who says something like “I won’t buy it because Link is not in it” really isn’t a Soul Calibur fan to begin with.

    • Mathew Gibbons

It’s not that we want to play as Link, it’s that we want to fight Soul Calibur characters as him. Plus some of us have him to thank for introducing us to Soul Calibur.

  • Shindoi Hayato

Hey Capcom, look at what your peers are getting right! (Not to say Capcom doesn’t have some rerelease gems, but CvS2’s recent release is a nightmare.)

  • David Curry

Maybe my excitement over this HD port with online play is just nostalgia over fun times back in 2003, but in 2013, every time I look at SCV I think, why the hell am I wasting my time and not playing VF?

    • Farpenoodle

You could ask VF players like Itazan, Fuudo, Aopai, Kamaage Akira, Shironuko and Kissa who all joined it at Evo. Itazan often says SCV is his main game now. Maybe you’d like to tell him about his bad taste in games.

      • David Curry

It’s easy to miss since SCV wasn’t part of Evo’s official tournaments this year

      • James Farrar

I don’t care what Itazan says. SC5 is total garbage. It’s worse than SC3.

        • Farpenoodle

That’s your opinion and you’re entitled to have it. As an SC vet who’s played almost all of them competitively, I think you’re completely wrong. But my post is addressing VF fanboys who didn’t seem to get the memo that a good number of the best VF players in the world seem to think SC5 is awesome.

  • Inan

What a coincidence. Yesterday I JUST started playing Soulcalibur II for the first time in ages, on Dolphin (HD).

  • Johnny Donuts

Ugh would you people shut up with the stupid “ITS JUST NOSTALGIA” argument? That’s so annoying. You know people say the same thing about MVC2, 3s, CvS2 etc. We have legit reasons for liking SC2. Mainly the speed is what i like about it. The new soul calibur’s just seem so random and mashy

  • Nomad

Tekken Tag Tournament 2 is on all three major consoles, considering that, Heihachi might actually be the only guest character. Back in the PS2 days Tekken wasn’t on any other system, so now that Tekken isn’t a Playstation exclusive anymore, the WiiU has the highest possibility for another character. Outside of that I guess this pretty cool, I’d very much rather be hearing about what type of project Soul Calibur: Lost Swords is, but this SC2:HD could very well be a foreshadowing of things to come.

  • Yan Zhao

They could’ve just fleshed out the story and all the content we didnt get for SCV instead. I mean I love this game and all, but I’ve played it enough on my PS2 days.

  • Leo Eduard

Awesome! I love Soul Calibur series!

  • will it be 15$ or 20$
