PlayStation 4 Incompatible With PS3 Mad Catz Fight Sticks

By on June 19, 2013 at 5:05 pm

A while back, Sony said that PS3 controllers would not work with the PS4. However, the issue of PS3 USB fight sticks was still a bit vague. Well, we now have confirmation that Mad Catz’s popular line of PS3 fight sticks will explicitly not be compatible with the PS4.

This news comes by way of Mad Catz senior product development manager Richard Neville who said in a statement to Joystiq “The PlayStation 4 will require a whole new set of peripherals.” We have already seen the first next-gen peripheral in the way of the new Killer Instinct TE2 Fight Stick that we got to see at E3. However, Mad Catz has not revealed any plans for PS4 joysticks at this time.

What about XB360 sticks for XB1?

  • Martini Whoelse

    inb4 fanboys

  • Brit Mckay

Again, as was said on EH, I will wait for Sony to weigh in on this. MCZ will say that because, ultimately, they want you to buy stuff from them.

    • ReddChief78

You want Sony to tell you how Madcatz products work over Madcatz word OOookay

      • To be fair PS3 sticks, AFAIK, are non-proprietary and are pretty much freely able to plug them into anything, e.g. computers. So far it sounds like the PS4 might be going proprietary, like the 360, although it’s still not set in stone. Now MadCatz gets their specs from Sony, but Sony will ultimately have the final word on the matter.

      • Brit Mckay

Yeah, because Sony built the system that the sticks are designed to operate on. Sony has the final word in what will and won’t work on their system. Dude from Madcatz could just be basing it on the fact that they won’t work on XBone.

  • Sam

Sony says one thing in a Giantbomb interview then Madcatz comes out with this. With no fighting games announced for PS4 yet (or at least I haven’t heard of any), its funny that Madcatz is already trying to sell us new sticks. If a move controller still works on both why can’t a usb fight stick?

    • ReddChief78

The only stick Madcatz is trying to sell is the Xbox One stick which has a fighting game and has said there is no sticks for PS4 right now because there is no fighting game for PS4 yet

  • Azis Rafael

I don’t see how a simple software couldn’t detect and convert signals to make it work, since it is USB. Another way to make money, I hope Sony drop it to keep the head start they got before over Xone, now that microsoft took back all previous DRM statements.

    • Amer1ka

They could make it work. However, it’s in Sony’s best interest to not allow the last generations peripherals to work not only because it will increase profits by players buying extra controllers but also because of the Share button and the motion/touch pad thing. They want people to use that stuff and if they can simply use a PS3 controller then people will not be as inclined to use the features they want you to use since you physically do not have a button for it.

It sucks but that’s the way it is and it makes perfect sense from a business perspective even if it doesn’t help your wallet.

  • AriesWarlock

    what about hori?

  • ouroborus

stripped down to its very core, an arcade stick is just a box with buttons and a joystick. all you need to do is replace the ps3 pcb with a ps4 one or dual/triple/quad mod it to work with all systems.

  • Michael_Glade

lol are you really going to trust madcatz on this? wait till sony says something or try it yourself when the ps4 becomes avaliable

  • Eric Nguyen

So… I assume this affects Qanba Q4’s as well?

    • blacklantern135

Also wondering this. Any info, anyone?

  • CORN Pinkies Up

Of course MarkMan would say something like that so you’ll buy more sticks. The good news is that you’ll be able to use your current MadCatz sticks on PCs, so start knocking on the doors of fighting game developers to get more fighters on PC, the ultimate gaming platform.

am i the only one that chuckled at this?

      • ReddChief78

I get a kick out of it everytime especially when fighting game talk is involved lol

    • Nael

Convincing Japanese developers and publishers to put more games on PC? Good luck with that.

      • Smashbro29

Getting Metal Gear Rising and Mortal Kombat. Capcom is putting out its games day and date with PC lately. I mean… it’s happening.

        • Nael

Mortal Kombat’s an American title. And when Japanese companies are consistently putting their titles on PC and not picking and choosing which ones to port (where’s Marvel? Soulcalibur and Tekken? To go outside of fighters, how about JRPGs or Dragon’s Crown?) then I’ll believe it.

    • MrVec

      Richard Neville is Mark Julio?

  • Kuroi

i wonder if ps360+ will work with a ps4 firmware update

    • o ChocolateMilk o

i wonder if all Dual Mod sticks will work

    • Wedge

Yeah if it doesn’t require some kind of special hardware chip like 360 (and I’m sure XB1) do, I’m hopeful a firmware update might work, since I got a stick with a PS360+ in it recently.

  • RobertEspaillat

Guys this is a business they want to make money, it sucks for you guys, thank god i am a PAD Player

    • me too, just learn Pad & skip the expensive sticks altogether, This was enivetable & I knew Pad Players were gonna get the last laugh……Suddenly Pad Players are not so odd & wierd, turns out we were pretty smart to learn Pads…..Go Vangief & Wolfkrone……& Sticks can hold that “L” & be Salty reading this!!

  • Yogsagath

    lol Not getting

  • JasinWalraven

correct me if I am wrong, but as I remember the Madcatz PS3 sticks would not work on PC’s witn AMD chips and the PS4 had AMD chips, so there isn’t a way for it to directly work.

    • 100ctual

i have amd chipset etc on pc and my ps3 sticks work just fine on my pc

    • ReddChief78

My older Madcatz sticks doesn’t work on PC first stick i got that worked on PC was the SFxT stick

    • TiredOcean

Kind of, but not really. PS3 Madcatz sticks used a proprietary USB interface called UHCI, which was developed by Intel and is available on USB ports on Intel and VIA products.
Since it’s proprietary, AMD motherboards usually don’t support it (some do, but my desktop PC, for example, doesn’t), since they only use OHCI, which is an open standard. You can install a VIA USB card on your AMD mobo to make them work though.

  • blacklantern135

Does anyone know if the QANBA Q4 (for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3/PC) will work on any next-generation consoles?

    • Klisk

      It’s unlikely.

  • Amer1ka

They have to sell the new Share button and touch screen. If they allow older devices to be compatible it will undermine their new features along with decreased peripheral sales profits. It sucks but it definitely shouldn’t be shocking news to anybody.

If you wait for a while there may be a quick mod done that you can add to your current sticks before any notable fighter comes out on the PS4. Our guys are GOOD and if it can be done it will be done quickly.

    • Smashbro29

But that shit adds nothing to a fighting game.

      • Amer1ka

I’m mostly just saying Sony’s reasoning. They want every interface possible to be capable of using their features or the product probably won’t get official licensing (which MadCatz cares about…it’s why we got those awful button colors on the 360 TE sticks).

But, to play devil’s advocate, the PS4 features actually do. The PS4 constantly records your play. I’d probably guess 30-60 seconds is recorded. So if you do something pretty badass in a fight you can hit the share button and it goes to youtube, ustream or other upload sites or you can save the file for your own use as a clip. So, actually, yeah it does add a bit. Maybe not for you but I know a lot of people in the FGC who would love being able to hit one button and instantly do that.

      • Klisk

They’re not specifically trying to block fightsticks, they’re trying to block third party pads from the PS3.

  • XxStanTheManxX

I attended E3 last week and asked the companies the question about existing fightsticks work on the next gen systems. Both Microsoft and Sony employees on the floor didn’t know. So, i went to Mad Catz and spoke to Markman personally. He told me that the fightsticks that were on display and playable on the show floor were custom hacked to work. I didn’t mention that i make custom fightsticks and Dual Mod. USB cables have 4 wires, common ground, ground, OD+, and OD- wires. Fightsticks are powered up from the system and receive signals to communicate. I don’t see why existing fightsticks wouldn’t work on the next gen systems. Fightsticks don’t need the extra features for online communications. Just able to play fighting games (Killer Instinct). By the way, Killer Instinct was awesome!

    • Yousend

I’m not going to try to put you on blast, but it’s pretty funny that you make dual mods but don’t realize why a PS3/360 stick wouldn’t work on a PS4/XBONE.

      • Klisk

I think he meant that he doesn’t see why the sticks wouldn’t be easily modded to work.

  • Rahavic

Oh who cares? $50 bucks or so for the dual mod and your stick will work over getting a brand new $150 stick. If you can mod sticks to work on DC and mod MAS sticks to work on PS3, you can mod sticks to work on PS4. This intimidation to make people think they have to go through hell and get brand new sticks for the PS4 is just dumb. MODS WILL BE AVAILABLE FOR PS4 FOR YOU PS3 STICK DONT FOOL YOURSELF! Thanks.

  • I wonder if PS360+ fireware updates will make it compatible…

    • Petran79

nah, they’ll make us buy an adaptor instead. USB to PS4USB

    • TiredOcean

Probably, or at least I hope so.

    • Klisk

      Same hope for Cthulhu.

  • I am guessing with MadCatz saying “not at this time” Microsoft threw them a few bones to drop a stick for them and Killer Instinct first. I am sure after the consoles drop the will be crazy adapters not to mention MadCatz isn’t the only one out there that make arcade stick.

  • Go2hell66

So how long til we get a convertor?

  • GeForceFX

Welp. I guess I need to get that solder then.

  • Smang

i will hope that toodles can update the cthulu firmware to support ps4 if possible.

  • Johnny Donuts

There aren’t even any fighting games announced for PS4 yet, so I have no reason to care.. Yet.
Skullgirls coming on PC, and the PC version of AE is the best version. So i’m content with those. Hopefully future fighting games are on PC also.

    • HombreGranJefe

MK9 finally got here, so there’s hope. I’d like to see Injustice show up. It’s probably too late for KOF13.

  • CaioNV

Aren’t these expensive? They really should actually make them compatible…

  • Mark Imakebeats Ford

the fuk am i spossed to do wit these custom fightsicks I’ve invested a freakin fortune into then. Meh.
