Arc System Works Announces New Arcade Fighting Game Title GUILTY GEAR Xrd -SIGN-

By on May 19, 2013 at 9:03 am

2013 is both the 25th year of operation for game developer Arc System Works and the 15th anniversary of its popular fighting game series Guilty Gear. Today, at the 25th anniversary celebratory event ARC SYSTEM WORKS FESTIVAL, the developer unveiled that the Guilty Gear series would finally be receiving an all-new fighting game title, GUILTY GEAR Xrd -SIGN-. Below is the first trailer for the game, showcasing a fierce battle between the eternal rivals Sol Badguy and Ky Kiske and the new visual style of the game. The end of the trailer teases two other series trademark characters and rivals, Millia Rage and Eddie.

GUILTY GEAR Xrd -SIGN- is the first fighting entry in the series to use 3D models. The game runs on SEGA’s RINGEDGE2 / ALL.Net P-ras MULTI Ver.2 system. Daisuke Ishiwatari, mastermind of the Guilty Gear series, is once again taking charge as general director.

Arc System Works has already opened the portal site of the game at Stay tuned in the future for more information on this brand new arcade title.

  • Kurow Akutenshi

Now THIS is how a 2.5 D fighter should look. Mahvel 3 was a step in the right direction, but this blows that out of the water and several lightyears away from the solar system.

  • please don´t start with blazblue vs P4A vs GG _-_ that´s boring and by the way o.o arcsys is doing very good job first blazblue anime and now guilty gear game, watch and learn, they have a very good vision.

  • Deniz Genc

I wonder what Novril will make of this.

  • Jon McGuire

    OH MAN

Time to usher in a new era of beautiful looking fighting games, take some hard notes Capcom, if you even bother to.

    • Mike Jones

Looking good doesn`t make the game fun…. but i will say this. DAISUKE!
So in this case i have no worries this game is going to be amazin. So yes, i agree.

  • The end of trailer also teases another series trademark characters, Zato-1 and Eddie.

  • Yo, these visuals are hella tight man.

Any idea on the platforms this is gonna be on? I’m a keyboard player so consoles are a no-go for me.

    • ReddChief78

Then you might wanna start bro i’ll be surprised if it gets a PC release

      • Its running on the Unreal Engine so it wouldn’t be a surprise if it did end up on PC.

        • Joshua Rodriguez

They wouldn’t be able to hide behind the “it’s too hard/expensive to port” excuse at any rate. Let’s just hope they understand that the horrible sales of Blazblue on PC was their fault and realize there might be a market for fighting games on the PC afterall.

    • JohnGrimm

Maybe you should look into the Hit Box.

      • A bit too expensive for me. Really don’t have the money to afford a $160 stick + shipping to europe, nor the know-how to make one myself.

        • Kevin Wark

You could buy all of the tools and components needed to build one less than $160.
Surely you can learn how to use a drill and a screwdriver.

I expect this game is going to be available for just about every platform at some point anyway, though. Unreal Engine and polygonal graphics should make it much easier to port than previous GG games.

        • ProzacStylings

As a former reasonably high-level keyboard player(competitive play + combo videos, etc), I can definitely recommend button-boxes.

I’d also strongly recommend making your own instead of getting a hitbox; if only because the people behind HitBox are kind of douchebags, and because SOCD Cleaning = post-manual input-alteration = cheating, just as much as custom, not-game-supported macro buttons would be.

I can also mention that, while Keyboard to Console adapters exist, many are not very good at all(XSFPS is complete crap, Max Shooter is “okay”). Playing on a buttonbox felt MUCH better than playing on Keyboard on console, once I got used to it.

        • Petran79

you can buy a cheap arcade stick and turn it the opposite direction, assuming you use right hand for directional inputs or play crosshanded. Complete adaptation from keyboard will only take 2 months at most, plus 360/720 moves become feasible.

  • Etienne Pnj Austin

Can’t tell you how many times I came watching this.

    • Trekiros

I stopped counting at the Unreal Engine logo.

  • Art Salmons

The quality looks great. On the other hand, besides Ky’s fruity ponytail, everything looks EXACTLY like the 2D Guilty Gear. Same outfits, same moves, same combos same supers. Why go through so much effort to recreate what you already have?

    • ReddChief78

The same reason every other game gets recreated with what it already has with new graphics and mechanics you will NEVER see Ryu’s Hadouken hurrican kick and SRK taken away from him in a game plus the game is still in development so we dont know what the game will have

    • WrathChild

Because 2D GG was awesome enough? If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

    • $18114340

Isn’t it a bit early to say that the game looks exactly like 2D Guilty Gear? We don’t know anything about the mechanics, the systems, or even what characters there will be besides Sol, Ky, Millia, and probably Eddie.

At about 2:09, Sol does what looks like a dustloop — something that to my knowledge isn’t possible in XX Slash onwards. At this point we really don’t know what to expect.

    • Joshua Rodriguez

Even though I’m a much bigger fan of 2D over 3D, the latter gives you alot of options that 2D just doesn’t. Big one that comes to mind is alternate costumes, since all you have to do is rig a new mesh to the old skeleton and you’re good to go. It also lets them do those flashy cinematic moments/supers (not something I’m a fan of but hey, some people love that). It also makes it easier to do in-game cutscenes such as that moment at the end with Milia. Plus at the end of it all, it’s just cheaper and you get more bang for your buck. It would also be impractical to take the old sprites and upscale it to Widescreen HD, they’d need to remake their assets anyway.

I’m just glad they didn’t cynically swap to 3D and look like they REALLY tried to make it look 2D like the originals so as to not be so alienating to current fans. I like what I see so far, and I’m fucking excited to see this develop. Can’t contain the hype!

  • Sir_Krackalot

I’m not quite as much a fan of the new character designs and graphical style (mostly because of the faces)…wait, who cares.

  • Solxwarrior777

  • Richard N

    OH MY ***KING GAWD!!!

Finally! I’m freaking tired of pretending I actually like Persona.

  • MasterScrub

This announcement just gave me the most intense orgasm of my life

  • ReddChief78

I already knew this was coming but damn its good to finally hear them to announce it

  • Hotaka Saika

Not hell yes but hell mother fucking YES! Pardon my language.

Hope they hurry up with porting it to consoles. Guess I’ll have to make due with BB: CP until then.

Edit: “The wait is finally over”…The hell with that, the wait’s just beginning!

  • R.D. Covenant

This made my day even better! One of the few games that can compete with my love for Skullgirls! Here’s hoping for a console version. PS3, PS4, or Wii U please. And Xbox360/720 as well of course…

    • $18114340

Since it appears to be running Unreal, a console port is pretty much inevitable at some point.

  • Robomitsu

I don’t know how to feel. Those visuals look way too cartoony and Unreal Engine can suck a dick. But still… IT’S FUCKING GUILTY GEAR. Please, please don’t be like BlazBlu…

    • Hotaka Saika

Uh…..GG has always been a bit cartoony. I wonder if maybe you feel that way because the colors are a lot more vibrant than they were/are in current GG games.

      • Zeik56

Well the portraits used for the characters weren’t especially cartoony, but those were never representative of what they actually looked like in the game. The sprites were definitely pretty cartoony.

  • ragnarok954

Blazblue’s wheel of fate has stopped turning!

  • Am I ready to rock?!!! Hell Yeah I’m ready!!!..Unreal?!!

  • $18114340

  • Micheal Holloway

this is just awesome! I’ m a gamer and i never cared about how a game looked im just
glad to see this series move forward. all i ask is keep the fucking gameplay!! That
is what made guilty gear so awesome and so much better than blazblue (yes i
love blazblue but there are too many characters in that game designed for noobs
making the game a simple fighter). if it wasn’t for the loyal fans giving GGACP
so much attention this would have never happened. like two years ago they were
saying that blazblue was going to replace guilty gear and now the fans have
answered back and got what they wanted.

    • Hotaka Saika

If they did say the word ‘replace’, didn’t they start making BB games way back when Sega still held the rights to the IP? That might’ve influenced their decision making at the time, though I’m positive Ishiwatari was trying desperately to get his baby back.

      • Micheal Holloway

yeah true i forgot about that my bad

  • YES!!!!

  • heatEXTEND

  • Louis Lam

  • Rugar Pastrana

    The king is back!

  • Riot

It looks like the clashing has been given more emphasis. Or it’s just one of those choreographed scenes they sometimes did in the old ones.

    Also, they made dust cinematic.

    • Narcowski

Either higher level attacks or attacks done with stronger buttons seem to win clashes (the example clashes were both higher level and stronger button attacks, so it’s hard to say). The loser ends up in a staggered recovery state (at frame disadvantage). Assuming that projectiles on the screen still don’t stop moving when characters are experiencing hitstop or hitstun and that it is not possible to block during the stagger after a clash, this could have some pretty interesting gameplay implications, especially for characters which are heavily reliant on projectile setups for pressure / okizeme (e.g. Venom, Dizzy, Millia, etc.).

  • darryl215

eddy was in Millia Rage’s eye at the end 2:42 a clear image

  • pootnannies

looks like they nailed down that “is it 3D or 2D?” look so congrats to them for that. but fuck bootcut jeans and stupid names like Xrd. still looks like it plays similar if not exactly the same as GG, especially speed wise. capcom should learn from this…

    • Riot

      What’s wrong with bootcut jeans?

  • eilegz

no XXX 🙁 sigh we need blazblue vs guilty gear

  • ReddChief78

Comparison pics of old Sol and the all new Sol Badguy

  • Simply Chun-believeable ^_~ ♥♥

Ky and Sol as hot as usual….

But MILLIA!! I didn’t think I would see her until later on in the game’s dev process!! She’s gorgeous, glad to see she’s not dead. I wanna see Jam, Dizzy, May, Anji and Chipp’s new designs.

  • Tokido

Why do I want to fuck Ky?

    • Oniros

Plot twist: it’s actually Bridget in a new costume.

  • NateDizzy

Good lord, I can’t believe those are 3D models. They look/move so much like sprites. Much props to arcsystems for translating 2D so beautifully

    • One important thing I noticed was that they actually make the 3d movement appear jerky like 2d frames often are. That’s a huge part of why it looks so 2d, very clever.

  • Paul S

    Needs Faust.

  • david carter

  • SpecDotSign

Is this the next gen fighting game Arc System Works have been talking about? I really hope so. Capcom, take notes.

  • KubikiriTurkojin

if the capcunts had some love for their fans they would have made a darkstalkers game that looks like this, or a sf5 in this style.

also ive always been 2d > 3d, but a samurai shodown done in this style could actually look potentially fucking awesome.

    • SgtKardashian

I agree, I would buy a Samurai Showdown 2-esque game that was done in this style. Like an SF4 version of Samurai Showdown something that goes back to the roots.

      • KubikiriTurkojin

        couldnt agree more with you.

Well thanks for killing Blazblue fuckers.

    • *pat* there there I’m sure its not gone…forever it will be back at some point I’m sure. At least you have number three that is coming out pretty soon..and then Guilty will come out..and welp you’ve come to the realization. 😀 dat guilty.

  • RazingPhoenix

This company was pretty much one of the reason’s why I thought we still had a lot more time with hand drawn art for fighting games. I like BB so I’m sure that this game will be at least decent, but to say that I’m disappointed with their art direction would be an understatement.
Ishiwatari is the composer and director? What a diverse skill set.

    • Riot

He’s also the voice actor for Sol Badguy

      • RazingPhoenix

Now that’s just too much lol.

  • Jelani-Akin

  • Fuck YeAh!!!!! FUCK YEAH! HELL YEAH!! Fuck yes!

  • I can’t control it!!!! Did anyone else watch this thirty times? Hyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyype!

    • Go2hell66

you fucking scrub i watched it a million times

      • I was trying to be moddest, I did too lol.

        • Micheal Holloway

my question is, why would you stop watching it after million?

  • Yeeeeeees!

  • edgar rinza

im too pumped. losing my mind over this

  • who … comes … up with these names!?

    • samirerre

      well its japan after all..

  • Daisuke really trolled hard in that interview he had a while back. I’m definitely very eager to see what they’ve been able to create with the unreal engine this is kind of interesting to me. I wonder if its unreal engine 4. It looks like Epic are starting their world domination..kinda of scary *shudders*

  • DarkRiosIII

So it’s still in development which means it might be out in Japanesee arcades in 6 months of we are lucky, then what a year later on next gen consoles in Japan? So we are talking about it coming out here in the US in what almost two years….man that’s a long wait.

  • Zonder88
