Correct me if I’m wrong but it seems like none of infiltrations SFxT matches were streamed, nor was Fanatiq vs. Momochi marvel match. Considering how many joe blow vs. joe blow matches there were in every game today, seems like a bit of an oversight. Especially considering how Infiltration is as likely to lose to some norcal online player as he is to any known top player.

  • Zonder88

    No Injustice in the schedule?

    • Joey T Medina

      Sadly no. Sucks eh?

      its not an evo game.

big streams are always this bizarre timewarp. The monsters are all still in about 2010.

    Gasp Bros was hype

    SenorTaxi!!

  • GCBill

It’s really interesting to see both AE and UMvC stabilize in the way that they have. Less than a year ago you had several guys all vying for the top spot, and now we know definitively who the best in each game is.

Also, Melee results are almost certainly messed-up. Unless Zhu and S2J each played the other’s main, you mixed up their characters. Also, S2J is listed as beating Westballz yet he’s in 5th.

  • RomanceHD

For Marvel these days it always seems like every match is hype except for Grand Finals Lol

Lol naw it didn’t it’s not the Soul Fist that bother me at all, just latley Grand Finals have been pretty weak. Chris G had hype matches leading up to Grand Finals that were great but Grand Finals just have been a bust lately.

  • Calvin Lofton

I’m a little dissapointed in iplaywinner. They weren’t paying attention with Melee Top 8. Almost every match the names were wrong. We told them multiple times via twitter and the stream chat that they had the names flipped almost every match. Because of their mess up SRK got the characters all wrong

    • Art Salmons

Solution: never stream Smash Brothers again, ever.

    • Louis Lam

IPW stream was really good actually. The commentator choice was nice, the quality was good, the mods were fast, and listened when people wanted the slow mode taken down.

Sure they could’ve (and should’ve) fixed up the sloppy job on the names but for how well everything else was it didn’t take away from the match.

      • Calvin Lofton

I totally agree with everything you just said. But, in terms of importance, name labels are one of if not thee most important thing when it comes to streaming.

  • AJ Gosling

Melee was pretty much the only game with top 8 on the secondary stream instead of the main stream, despite clocking in with the second highest amount of entrants after marvel, if I understand it. This shit is just silly.

it doesn’t help that almost every match in top 8 and the results have several names and characters wrong. These guys have time to write “CCGlChi-Rithy (Fei Long)” perfectly, but can’t figure out “Zhu (Falco)”? Really disrespectful. Hype event though.

    • GCBill

73 entrants, so probably not the 2nd highest lol (source: http://smashboards.com/threads/norcal-regionals-ncr-results-thread-4-27-13-sunnyvale-ca.336026/)

But yeah I agree it’s really disrespectful. And for anyone who’s ever paid any attention to Melee at all, most of those names have been topping results lists for the past few years. So this only further reinforces the divide between Smash and the FGC, a divide I was hoping would dwindle in anticipation of EVO.

  • I’m really glad they gave SFxT some actual coverage here in the results listing instead of the usual ‘Oh SFxT happened and here’s some guys who won’

  • GrimeDoc

Well, at least Chris G didn’t look unbeatable this time. I felt like both ApologyMan and Ranmasama had him beaten, but got integral combos broken by missiles, or cracked and faltered,. Plus, Senor Taxi, using a team that dealt with Morridoom surprisingly well, actually beat him AND made his typical strategy look..a lot weaker than usual.

And although Chris G is phenomenally good, I myself as a spectator started noticing, not only that he has a few bad habits, but how under par he is with Vergil compared to his other characters. Chris is brilliant, but clearly not flawless, and there are things that can be exploited to pull off a win on him. It’s completely possible that, by EVO, a select number of players will be able to beat him, and it’s really appeasing to see that having a chance of happening.

And I don’t say that because I dislike Chris G. I find him really impressive, his match-up knowledge is insane, and his Soul Fist patterns are really intelligent sometimes. But I want him to lose because I want someone to really challenge him. As of late, he just seems to be a bit too complacent in his success, and he hasn’t needed to develop his game that much, so his level of improvement has kind of plateaued. He keeps winning by doing the same thing over and over, and no ones pushing him to become a stronger competitor. He could be even better, I want to see him fully master his team, but it just won’t happen until someone shows him that what he has now won’t save his ass all the time, and that he’ll need to step his shit up.

    Also, Bipson_Bank is godlike

    • this is retarded….chris had always leveled up with this team…before his doom and vergil were just there…now he has the best comeback doom in the business and his vergil has been getting deadlier with each tournament…complacent? the guy came from losers at final round and now NCR…blow that hot useless tl;dr story elsewhere

      • Bavo Bruylandt

Agreed. He got a lot of flack due to his comments but he came back once again through the whole loser bracket. He needed to win twice the number of matches to get the first spot. That again proves he is nowhere near defeat.

      • GrimeDoc

I think I got my point across poorly. I don’t mean he hasn’t gotten better lately. I mean he hasn’t improved SIGNIFICANTLY lately. And I said lately, not when he first started using the team. He’s gotten tremendously better with this team since it’s inception, but he’s kinda supposed to. You inherently get better with a character as you use them, and he’s a top level player, of course he’s gotta bring them to a level that they are competent.

But I’m talking about how much he’s improved, say, over the last 2 or 3 months. What did he do that was so different to what he was doing pre-Final Round? Even when you think about it, he came back from losers at Final Round and NCR doing exactly the same thing that actually put him in losers.

His Doom is great. Not better that it was a month ago though. His Vergil is decent, but by now it should be vicious. Every time his Vergil came in with no X-Factor, I wasn’t so confident he’d be able to win the game, and since that’s arguably the best character in the game, and the undisputed best Marvel player wielding him, why should that impression ever cross my mind?
And even his Morrigan progression has halted. He, without a doubt, has the best Morrigan in the business, and that’s without superior movement and infinites, among other things. I want to see him have a reason to actually start being bothered to learn these things, that’d be incredible to see.

        • jellosnake

Thats just non-sense. Of course he hasnt improved SIGNIFICANTLY lately, everyone has a pinnacle that once reached, there only so much more u can go above. And Chris, IMO, has reached that pinnacle. All he can do now is fine-tune his team (execution and strategy). If your expecting him to make another leap like when he started out this year, then your going to be sadly disappointed.

All three of his character are deadly, not just his morgan. Hes comeback with Vergil and doom throughout the tourney. LOL at no confident with no X-factor Vergil. Very situational and could be said with any character in the cast.

          • GrimeDoc

If he can fine-tune his team, then he hasn’t reached his pinnacle yet. That’s evidence enough that he can get better. And if he can, then he should. But since he doesn’t need to, he won’t. Which is why I said before I feel he’s gotten more complacent. Not completely, but much more than when he was going back-to-back with MarlinPie.

And you’re right. I shouldn’t expect to see Chris G exude talent like he did earlier this year/end of last year in terms of improvement, and I don’t. But there are players like RayRay and Alukard, who clearly show that they’ve gotten better pretty much every time you see them play, even though sometimes it’s hard to visualize that they can even get much better. And when Chris G plays, I don’t get the same impression.

So OK, maybe saying significant improvement is too drastic. I guess the proper word is progression. His characters are deadly now, yes, but he shouldn’t stop there, especially since those same deadly characters didn’t get him to winners finals.

And yeah, the Vergil comment was kinda dumb 🙁
My bad I guess. But there are anchor Vergil players that appear to have the upper hand, even once they lose X-Factor, and with Chris, it just feels like more of a toss up in the air rather than an advantage imo.

          • Bavo Bruylandt

If you can beat Momochi together with the rest of US SF4 at their own game without putting much effort into the game, then clearly you are talented.
His Sakura was nearly flawless. That shows to me that he has all the fundamentals to start with, and whatever else he needs in MvC3 gets on top.
He earns a place next to Tokido, Xian and Justin with those player skills. And lately he surpassed Justin.

Evo is going to be great again

    • Zonder88

Funny thing is all 4 losses ChrisG got from Ranmasama and ApologyMan happened when his Morrigan died early without dealing major damage to the rest of his opponent’s team. Once he got astral vision started everything went downhill for ApologyMan and Ranmasama. Which is a shame. They were both so close.

    • jellosnake

Not being challenged? Are you kidding me. You know how many ppl are at home studying and learning his Morgan team on a daily basis trying to crack it. Its the one team everyone is trying to beat, and coming up with new technology to over come it. Hes facing that kind of challenge.

if you think hes doing the same thing over and over again, then you are not observing properly.

    • Kim Ogawa

You should of just ended it with “….is phenomenally good.”

Chris g not flawless? I can’t recall anyone that’s been this consistent. This is marvel, anyone can lose to anyone in this unpredictable game.

  • Danny Craig

wow ChrisG even won Divekick. This says something about his talent in FGs and Divekick as a legitimate FG too.

  • They really should fix the names for Melee. A bunch of them are wrong.

  • Bavo Bruylandt

Xian proved that Infiltration can be beat. But it will never be easy. Impressed that ChrisG got over Momochi in SF4 too. Momochi was really strong this tournament, only losing to Infiltration and really rolling over all the rest of the players. But not over ChrisG, who was actually focused on winning MvC instead of SF4.

  • Zonder88

Marvel is doomed until Doom Missiles gets nerfed.

I’ve lost count to how many times the missiles saved Chris G’s ass this tournament. Getting a hit on Morrigan is hard enough already.

Tired of Capcom’s excuse that they cant patch the game cause of licensing. They arent even putting an effort to do it. What’s Marvel gona do? Say no to a nonprofit patch to make the game better? Not like Capcom make any money out of this, they’d be the ones spending. Marvel dont lose anything in this. If Capcom even attempted to patch the game by discussing it with Marvel Im sure Marvel wouldnt care. THey have no reason to say no from a business standpoint.

    • jellosnake

      Nerf Chris G

    • Dave D

The licensing excuse doesn’t work here. I think the problem is that they don’t have anyone actually assigned to do any sort of work on UMvC3. The devs are working on other projects (whether they be FG related or not). When you have projects lined up, you need to assign people to do the work. Those people can’t just stop what they’re doing and work on MvC because then the schedules for the other projects get messed up.

Since sales of UMvC3 were so poor, they don’t feel the business need to assign people to work on it when there are other (read: more lucrative) things those devs could be working on.

      • I find it pretty funny how the one game that has pulled the most casuals into the competitive scene and gets the most views on streams ended up selling the worst out of all these fighters, lol.

    • SpiderDan

So lightning loop, spiral swords loop, Doom/Ammy THC, Magneto/Dante THC… these things are all fine, but the one viable zoning character needs an anvil dropped on her head?

      • Zonder88

No, they are not fine, but you know what? In the grand scheme of things right now Doom missile assist is the worst plague of this game. Its a free cop-out. Morrigan already shuts down any form of offense for rushdown characters and missiles just saves her for the 5% chance she gets hit. People complain about Morrigan but she wouldnt be nearly as big of a threat (still strong) without missiles backing her up.

At least for all the other examples you listed, the players needs to work for that hit.

All they have to do is make missiles disappear if Doom gets hit. Not sure why it doesnt when even freaking CAPTAIN AMERICA loses his shield slash when hit.

        • Eddie Lambert

really??? missiles disappear on hit.. if you want that missiles best well not be a assist at all…. dude the Thor at final would gave you a blueprint for you to run with… the jam session setups gave you a blueprint… stop whining about nerfs and LVL yourself up.

        • SpiderDan

So in a game full of dominating rushdown, the “worst plague” of the game is an assist that interrupts it?

This isn’t Tekken. I’m glad there’s still a viable zoning character in Marvel; Cable was viable in MVC2 and that game was fine.

If they make Doom missiles disappear on hit, they also need to go through and make HSD apply to a whole bunch of moves that it currently does not (round trip and lightning are two big ones).

    • Eddie Lambert

missiles have already been nerved… from 8 to 6 what else do the hell you want???

  • Jebril

Chris G is the new Justin Wong, not of the East Coast but of America. He seems to have a better chance at beating the Japanese players in SFIV than J.Wong now and that’s not even his main game (Marvel is). Just like Justin back when he was on EC and dominating. We breed killers!

    • Lawrence Ohh

I agree. ChrisG is the year 201X of what Justin Wong did in 200X. There’s alot of haters, but look at his results. At first, it was just Marvel, but now, he’s dominating every fighting game he touches, from SFxT, SF4, KoFXIII, MK9, Injustice, even DIvekick for heaven sakes. Was really impressed with ChrisG’s SF4 performance. ChrisG will be a real threat in this year’s EVO in not just Marvel this year but in multiple games.

  • GO4PRO

nothing was more satisfying than seeing that faggot ass Norcal crowd get real quiet when they realized the inevitable Chris G victory. Good stuff holding it down for the EC.

That was the same crowd that was cheering Chris G because he was the only American left in AE. Hold that shit times infinity, front runner ass bitches.

  • Jon Nitti

Soul Calibur 5 Side Tournament results (26 entrants)

    2. Alex.J (Voldo, Astaroth, Siegfried)
    3. Cedric (Viola)
    4. KrayzieCD (Maxi)
    5. Tomahawk (Mitsurugi)
    5. Rocktapus (Cervantes)
    7. Nyawu (Pyrrha, Patroklos)
    7. Manta (Voldo)

Great matches. Shoutouts to NorCalibur for making it happen even thought it wasn’t part of the main tournament.

  • Jake Klippert

It was hard seeing Neo go down like that in the GF but Chris G’s team is essentially designed to destroy Phoenix teams. Either way props to you Neo and I think everyone watching knew you gave it your all. Between sponsoring the tournament, running a booth the entire time and placing 2nd in Marvel when it looks like you hadn’t slept in days is commendable to say the least.

KaneBlueRiver, I knew who ya were before this and love the team of big bodies but when ya made a complete mockery out of F Champ it was probably my highlight of the weekend. That or the Taxi man rocking Chris G’s world was also pretty awesome too. Kane also put some scare into Chris G which I didn’t really see coming due to the fact that his whole team seems like Soulfist sponges, great stuff and great to see a team without Zero, Doom, Mag or Vergil doing so damn well.

As for Chris G, you are a beast. The highest placing American in Street Fighter is noteworthy by itself but you took out some so amazing talent on the way in some very impressive matches. As for Marvel… you are so far ahead of almost everyone else playing the game you should just nerf yourself. Maybe drop Doom and Vergil just for the sake of the hype and I don’t think ya need much more rent money here for a bit.

Infiltration….. the name should be synonymous with I DESTROY EVERYONE IN ANYTHING STREET FIGHTER. Too much talent and too much broken Akuma for anyone to handle in AE that’s for sure.

Spooky and Ultra David don’t work as a commentary team, I’m not sure if Magus knows what he is talking about 1/2 the time but at least I think he is right more often than SkiSonic. Great tournament, excitement straight through up until the GF Marvel match but you can’t blame anyone for Chris G’s antihype but him.

  • Jake Klippert

I also think that this tournament should be solid enough evidence of PS3 being terrible for UMvC3 and that it should be played on Xbox for competitions. I must have seen more than 20 dropped infinite attempts and by players who hit them consistently. I’m not saying this as a Chris G fanboy because he blamed his loss on PS3(could very well be though) but when most all of top players are constantly dropping combos that they shouldn’t be dropping there is problem. Chris G may blame his loss against Senior Taxi on the PS3 but I might go as far to say the PS3 is what won him the tournament. There were so many combos dropped on Chris G on the way to the GF it saved his ass. Dropping combos also hurts most other players teams more than Chris G’s, he really just wants to chip you out.

  • Mr. Warzard

Man, things change. Nobody here going to call out Norcal for getting rolled in every game except Tekken Tag? The sad decline continues.
