Arc System Works Interested in Creating New Fighting Game Series for PlayStation 4

By on March 28, 2013 at 11:59 am

During a recent interview with Dengeki Online, Arc System Works’ Toshimichi Mori revealed that the company is currently playing with the idea of creating a brand new fighting game title for the PlayStation 4. While little information is offered beyond this short statement, he mentions that this will keep the company in line with their own record of having a new series ready for updated hardware, citing Guilty Gear on the Dreamcast and BlazBlue on the PlayStation 3 as earlier iterations of this pattern.

We can’t give you a definite title yet, but we want to make one. We make fighting games, so we want to release a fighting game. We want to make a new title as a third axis along with BlazBlue and Guilty Gear. We actually made Guilty Gear targeting the Dreamcast, and we started creating BlazBlue around the time of the PS3 release, so we want to make a game for PS4 when the system releases. Creating new things at the turning point of time is who Arc System Works is, so we would like to take it on.

This makes Arc System Works the only major fighting game developer with clear plans for the next generation of consoles. Let us know what you think of this announcement in the comments below.

  • They need to make a proper sequel for Guilty Gear instead of updates for the old game. The updates are great but there’s no denial that a new game would spark new interest in the series. Guilty Gear 3 or Guilty Gear XXX, I dunno.

    • Oniros

I have enough FG mechanics to keep track of. Just gimme Guilty Gear in HD with good online and let’s call it a day.

    • Louis Lam

Guilty Gear XXX sounds like a porn parody.

      • Tokido

        I hope it has Bridget.

  • Or an all cast fighter. BlazBlue + Guilty Gear vs New Series

    • ReddChief78

I threw up in my mouth a little bit….i hope there working on a new GG as well its way over due but a hybrid hell no

      • Robert 10stars Brejcak

a hybrid would be amazing if it was GG based.

  • Go2hell66

PS4 or not they better keep it 2D HD Sprites or i won’t play it

    • Gamer Logic of 2013: refuse to play a game based entirely on whether or not it employs 2D HD sprites.

      • Go2hell66

I’ll remember you said that when they bust out the next tekken/doa clone 🙂

        • I fail to see how that has anything to do with anything.

          • Go2hell66

and i fail how to see my preference for 2D sprites is a problem?

          • Your preference isn’t a problem. The idea of a gamer basing his entire buying decision on the presence of 2D sprites isn’t really a problem either, but it is very, very dumb.

        • chipsndips

What does that have to do with anything?

Also, Tekken has been the way it is because there’s no room to fit any new mechanics. 2D fighters can do new things because they employ gauges with specific functions that vary depending on the character using them. 3D fighters only have you and the character’s move list. So it won’t change much.

Now regardless of this, what does that leeway for originality or lack there of have anything to do with art style preference or basing a purchasing decision based solely on that fact?

      • ReddChief78

2D sprite games play and look a hell of alot better i like both but 2D more but i understand some people rather not play them i think ASW is gonna stick to 2D

        • J.D SRK

          technology improves

          • ReddChief78

Yes in different ways which ASW’s has shown how 2D sprites have improved and Capcom showing how 3D has improved so your point is

        • Looks are subjective so let’s go to the bullshit part of your post, the part where you say it plays better. Which is bullshit. 2D games don’t inherently play better because of how they look.

          • pootnannies

although i agree that it doesn’t matter if it uses 2D or 3D, looks are not subjective since that is probably the #1 reason a new person would even bother taking interest in the fighting game genre.
as far as 2D gameplay, 3D SHOULD be better since they can stretch bones, adjust animations, etc. to better fit rearranged hitboxes but sf4 didn’t because of laziness or some unknown variable to myself.

      • pootnannies

problem is you seem to brand everyone for one persons opinion.

        • Why are you talking to me? You made it clear you don’t much care for what I have to say, so I fail to see what you think you’ll get out of this conversation.

I mean, I could call dumb for thinking I actually mean every gamer holds this opinion, and that there’s this thing called wordplay that makes the meaning of my post wildly clear, but would you listen? Would that lead to any sort of meaningful dialogue?

If you really don’t give two shits about me, don’t waste my time. Thanks.

  • Prodigious

  • Lane1

The only logical reason I can see for not developing a GG sequel is that they see the current game as a competitive standard and cash cow they can just keep updating and re-releasing digitally at very little cost.

  • martin rush

as long the game has traps and big booby ladies.

  • Crow Winters

Even if I’m not the biggest Arc System fan, I have to give them mad props for continually creating new fighting game IPs instead of vomiting up sequels to old franchises. Give me creativity and risk taking any day.

  • Mr. X

    Ignoring Battle Fantasia ;_;

    • BXFenns

      I wish they wouldn’t.
They had a character with a chainsaw motorcycle for godsake.

      • Barlton Canks

        laser-blade chainsaw hoverboard flamethrower

    • samael789

I loved Battle Fantasia. It needs a follow-up of some sort.

  • chipsndips

So in other words: Blazblue will go the route of Guilty Gear, with only 20-ish characters in its entire universe and a shiz ton of ground for new character ideas and system changes, only to stay lost in time as they work on a new anime fighter starting with 12 characters, working its way up to about 20 or so before they do it all over again.

Edit: To be fair to Guilty Gear, they at least have a good roster. 40 usable characters ain’t bad at all.

    • ZenTzen

uh they only have 26 characters in at most in GG fighting games, so i dont know where you’re getting the 40 usable characters from

      • chipsndips

40 through out the lore from what I got on their wiki page. Not in 1 single game.

But yea, these guys aren’t known for large roster fighters like Capcom games are. Easier to balance, but draws less attention.

  • As much as I would like to see them bring back guilty, I think it be best to go against the grain and come with something new entirely. I can let go of the idea of having another guilty gear as long as what they have in mind can out do the character design that I enjoyed with guilty. We know their capable of making a great fighting game let them do what they do best and thank them when they do it.

  • Peter Locke

I hope they go the opposite direction they usually do and make a slow, simplified, footsie-based game. Maybe there’s something wrong with my brain but Guilty Gear and BlazBlue are just too crazy for me. Persona 4 Arena was a step in the right direction in some ways, with the simplified controls and stuff.

If their next game had a health bar and no other bars or meters than that would be awesome too.

    • ZenTzen

    • Barlton Canks

They tried that already. It was awesome but it didn’t make money.

    • Crow Winters

Battle Fantasia. No one cared except Capcom, who took the most basic elements from it and made it a cash cow called SF4.

      • chipsndips

Wrong. That game looks like a pos that deserves its 67 Metacritic review. Secondly, SFIV takes from older SF games with ex moves, super moves, and the like, then uses focus attacks to replace parries as the new game defining mechanic. Lastly, SFIV makes money because people want SFIV. I’m sure the same thing would happen for Blazblue if it was on the level of Guilty Gear, seeing how it already happened for GG. Just cause something sells doesn’t mean it’s a “cash cow”.

        • pootnannies

have you played BF? sf4 doesn’t even have as good of hitboxes as that game and it’s way newer and more boring system wise. sf4 sold because it’s street fighter. period..

          • chipsndips

That’s WAY TOO subjective to be fact, similar to what I just said earlier being preeeeetty subjective as well. Still, only nine people bothered to rate Battle Fantasia on Metacritic, and it got a 67 average. SFIV got a 9, and so did Super, before they finally started taking off more points for the game being “just an update”. SFIV added full blown concepts to modern fighters: Ex moves and trials for combo practice (SF EX did ex moves first, but it caught on after SFIV), while utilizing a combat system that was inviting for newcomers but not alienating to vets. Hardly anyone’s heard of Battle Fantasia, and the nine reviewers that did weren’t impressed, and neither was I when I looked up some game play after hearing about ity. So yea, I’ma say you’re being an ASW fan boy right now.

        • Riot

          I think he meant this.

“The company has done this while maintaining a fiercely independent,
idiosyncratic vision, while still managing to dip its toes into the
waters of 3D. Arc’s work with the overlooked Battle Fantasia, released last year on Xbox 360 in North America via publisher Aksys, provided inspiration for the 3D turn of Capcom’s Street Fighter IV before that game entered development, according to SFIV’s director Yoshi Ono.”

    • Louis Lam

      Sounds mind-numbingly boring,

    • ils

I was going to get upset and insult you but then I realized the joke would be on me. B+.

  • Agarest War: Fighting edition.

  • Jordan Hoffman

    theyve churned out enough crap

  • Austin Davoren

What was that silly ass interview that was like “GG is too old, time to make a new game for the new generation?”

  • JasinWalraven

Here is an idea for them, no matter what game they come up with, put some thought into picking a name that sounds like it is a fighting game. Back in the 90’s i was just and average jump too much button scrubbing masher, I like fighting games and bought almost everyone that came out, as long as I knew it WAS a fighting game. Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, TMNT tournament fighters, ect. I remember seeing GG in the store but didn’t even pick it up to look at. Guilty Gears sounded like some sort of car game i hate car games so I didn’t even look at it 🙂

    • ReddChief78

Learn to read then you wouldnt make that mistake its Guilty GEAR GEAR GEAR not gears Guilty Gear doesnt sound like a car game Guilty GEARS does plus we have enough of the same ole fighting game names Guilty Gear & Blazblue are bad ass names they should stick with it its ORIGINAL

      • chipsndips

Guilty Gear sounds like a shooter tbh, and Blazblue sounds like an rpg. Also, Chrono Phantasma? The fk does that even mean? They need to fix up their names.

        • windsagio

you kidding me? Chrono phantasma is awesome! It’s almost as meaningful as scarlet weather rhapsody!

          • chipsndips

The fk is that supposed to even mean?

          • Crow Winters

It means he has played the most anime fighting games. He is the anime champion.

          • windsagio

I collect bad video game names like classier people collect fine art.

  • David Butler

Hokuto no Ken 2: Yatatatatatatata edition

    • ReddChief78

They said new but i really would like Hokuto no Ken 2 that game needs a PSN release asap

  • Nickolej Villiger

God bless this company for taking risks and trying new things. While they strive for a new unique fresh take, Capcom is stuck in ’92.

    • Timothy Ian McMillan

What risks? Arc rehashes GG for nearly a decade and carbon-copies half its mechanics into it’s other IPs.

      • ZenTzen

so basically, they’re the same as capcom

    • ReddChief78

You say that like its a bad thing i thank Capcom for that but they still set the trend with new mechanics while keeping it old school and others follow

    • windsagio

man I wish Capcom was stuck in ’92. Or maybe ’96 or 7.

    • locazo87

Cloning a game you already done is not taking risk. Dive kick is a risk, even skullgirls.

  • Richard N

Oh my gawd, make a new Guilty Gear already you cock teasing bastards!

  • windsagio

All I want to know is what they’re gonna name it.

    Make me smile, arc!

  • Tavis Taite

I’d wanna see a big, huge crossover. Guilty Gear X Blazblue. Just not as bad as, you know, SFxTK……

  • FakeBRS

    Arc to do list:
-Give a proper sequel to GG
-Finish BlazBlue and XBlaze before the new game. And they said that CP isn’t the last game.

  • SethGravijah

One (mere and only) advice then : World WIde Releases, please !

  • pootnannies

so just another anime fighter series 🙁

i really want another Battle Fantasia. i think that failed because (not too sound hella gayballs) it lacked “pazazz” and what not. i really liked the system and it was very simple but it wasn’t as dynamic in sound and visuals as it should have been. damn, really disappointed it’s going to be another guilty/blaz. not knocking on those games, just wanted something different 🙁

  • RunningWild1984

I’d love to see Arc do a new fighting game.

But how about some less belts this time around? Less anime wannabe designs. Let’s see a new fighter that is totally 80’s/90’s with manly men and womanly women. Keep the amount of freaks to a minimum, or none at all. Bring back the guy (or gal) in a karate gi, we haven’t seen a new fighter with one of those in a long time.

And please have a black character for once.

    • Göran Isacson

But that’s never been what ArcSys has been all about? That’s Capcom style, not ArcSys style, why would you even ask them that? Black characters though, that I can agree with, but design a Ryu or Ryo style character? Those guys already exist in other games, man.

      • George Anthony Herbers

Venom`s black-ish is he not. Kinda sorta.

        • Göran Isacson

True, I did forget about him. He’s SUPPOSED to be Egyptian, I think? With long white hair for… well, ArcSys reasons I suppose.

  • BlazBlue Vs Arcana Heart XD

    • JN00b312

Yes!! This or Arcana Heart 4 would be awesome X3

  • Webster Snow Jr.

I’d personally like to see AWS step out of the norm, and make an ACTUAL “ANIME FIGHTER”.

And a legit Bleach fighting game is seriously over due.

    Yay or nay?

    • chipsndips

      Better call Cyber Connect 2

    • SonOfTheNorthe

I’ve wanted a bleach fighter for a long time. A legit Naruto fighter would be pretty awesome too. Huge fucking roster. But I’d imagine balancing all that would be a bitch.

  • this is pretty far fetched but it’d be kickass if they took the old old old “Eternal Champions” ip from sega, since their not using it and it’s been long enough that people who haven’t played the platform it orginally came from haven’t a clue what i’m talking about. so having them put their own spin on it and whatnot could be pretty kick ass

  • Joshua Wolf Man Dussuau

they should turn the most popular anime naruto and make a REAL hardcore fighting game they did it with persona 4 so i don’t c why not

  • George Anthony Herbers

Battle fantasia wasnt great, but I`d like to see them try something like it again, just with sprites. Or at least something a step away from the gg bb style. I like those games plenty but variety is the spice of… a fighting game developers longevity I guess.`

  • rezo

ok ark, what rehash you got planned for us now

  • Dusk

    “Guilty Gear X BlazBlue”
