[UPDATE] Darkstalkers Resurrection Now Available on PlayStation Network and Xbox Live

UPDATE – Darkstalkers Resurrection is now available on Xbox Live.

As many of you are probably aware, this week will see the release of Darkstalkers Resurrection on PlayStation Network and Xbox Live. Developed by Iron Galaxy Studios, Resurrection bundles two fan-favorite installments of the Darkstalkers series (Night Warriors and Darkstalkers 3), providing new players a chance to try out the niche titles for themselves and old-school heads a modern console release.

Much like previous offerings from Iron Galaxy Studios, Darkstalkers Resurrection is no simple re-release. The title features a number of HD visual filters and online options, including player and ranked matches, eight-man lobbies, and a tournament mode, all supported by the smooth GGPO netcode. Tutorials were also added for players who are diving into the series for the first time, and in-game achievements will unlock special things like concept art and more.

Like with any storied franchise, there are also a few great resources available online for those of you looking to learn the game. Our wiki entries here on Shoryuken are full of great general game knowledge, and the folks over on Mizuumi maintain an extensive Vampire Savior (Darkstalkers 3) database of character information and strategies, so be sure to check them both out.

Below, you’ll find a list of recent Darkstalkers Resurrection stories we featured here on Shoryuken, from Capcom’s introduction and character tutorials to footage of Mad Catz’ Daigo Umehara and Sako of Team HORI trying out the game for themselves. If you missed them the first time around, feel free to follow the links below back to their original articles.

Darkstalkers Resurrection was released today on PlayStation Network for $14.99, and will be available on Xbox Live tomorrow for 1200 MSP. If you’ve already grabbed your copy, let us know what you think in the comments below.

Even though I’m getting this game and will enjoying playing the heck out of it! It pisses me off to no end that a VS1 wasn’t added with dip-switches to add the missing characters Huitzil/Phobos, Pyron & Donovan a la PS2 Vampire Collection (Japan-only) this is not the CPS2 board and they can be added accordingly, they are just being lazy and catering to the STUPID nostalgic (most of them) bunch of the FGC.

It was already confirmed that this build was based on the PS2 collection, so as to why they decided to remove the dip-switch feature is BEYOND ME!

They could have made separate servers for the people that want to play with the whole series’ cast…I don’t care if some people think it would fragment the crowd, it would cater to everyone having such features and playing the game however they like!

VS1 with dip-switches to add all character is the definite version with multiple different possible match-ups, the best version of the omitted characters, and how the original game was intended (if it weren’t for memory limitations)…there are even assets of every character to be in the game in the original’s CPS2 board….even Dee (exclusive to the PS2 Collection).

If they want to cater to new players, more content is best and supreme!

They can cater to everyone by adding the omitted characters of VS1 through Dip-switches = best build….but I digress.

I really hope they add a DLC option to add these Dip-Switches….I would buy it, in a heartbeat!

I just want to have the option, damn it! =D

    ’nuff said.

    • gbursine

I’ve counter argued this multiple times.  this iteration is suppose to be a feeler for interest of the next game.  The statement a long while ago regarding this being a ps2 release was later clarified as a mis-statement.  It is being made in similar fashion to mvcO. They did give oboro bish as a bonus, which was originally a non-selectable secret boss. This coincided with what i had said earlier. I think you are misprioritizing fanboy needs vs. the needs of competative play.

This being said, there has never been an arcade perfect version of vampire savior/ds3.  The current scene needs an accessible arcade perfect port more than your complaining needs quelling.

      • KubikiriTurkojin

no they dont, theyve got that on ggpo.

        • gbursine

I know you’re an expert, but ggpo runs at a framerate slightly faster than an actual arcade board. Additionally, not only is netplay not easily accessible to everyone, it will be likely removed by the end of the week.

          • Did Ponder actually address the situation of people invading other rooms?

He said the rooms would stay up until he did.

          • providing new players a chance to try out the niche titles for themselves and old-school heads a modern console release. http://www.Bestwork64dollareveryhouronthelabtop.qr.net/kdzW

          • KubikiriTurkojin

have you played sf3tsoe? its got frame rate issues (i play the arcade version) so that aint arcade perfect either, same will probably be true for ds.

also a frame rate slightly faster is better than a frame rate slower, ill take that and the game being free over this. besides fuck these greedy ass capcom fuckers.

          • gbursine

So far, all of us O.G. players feel no 2f latency.
And the frame rate feels solid so far.  so your assumtions and comparisons are not only asinine, they’re moot.

its been arcade perfect so far. everyone has access to it.
            can you go away now?

            regarding ponder, I don’t know.

        • Gethoff Mahfacebuk

We don’t need a legitimate arcade perfect version of Savior because we can just steal it off the internet?  Typical scumbag FGC, have fun watching the market for your favorite games die off a second time in a couple years.

          • Petran79

and spend 300 $ to play a 15 $ game? nah, buy SF4 or SFxTekken on PC and problem solved

          • KubikiriTurkojin

youre the scumbvag, faggot. people should earn their money, capcoms way of doing business isnt worth paying for. you can keep sucking their asshole for all i care, seems youre into that already so go ahead.

QUOTE: “I really hope they add a DLC option to add these Dip-Switches….I would buy it, in a heartbeat!” /QUOTE

Wow, you really are a Cashcom fanboy, don’t do that to yourself man.

      • Kaneco

Hey! I’m all for a free update…but that’s probably not going to happen!

I rather have it as cheaply paid DLC than nothing at all.

There won’t be any more re-releases and we still don’t know if DS4 is even going to be good as the originals, I want this re-release to be as perfect and complete as it can be…if DS4 ends up sucking, at least I have ‘this’ to go back to.

Most likely, we’re not going to get updates including the missing characters at all (including Dee) so I’m not going to keep beating the old dead horse, I’m just going to enjoy what I have….but one can only dream….of more content.

        • $35897352

Ok bro, it is your money, I apologize.

  • Man, I hope Capcom finally makes a new Darkstalkers after that. I’ll get this and will Soul Fist my way into PSN

  • Cat Astrophy

“The title features a number of HD visual filters” and they all look terrible. I love the old DS games just as much as I love MvC2 but I just don’t feel as compelled to pick up these titles as I did MvC2 when it relaunched on the arcade networks. I really want a new Darkstalkers but I’m afraid it will be bad with Capcom’s reputation of late so the final decision maker for me is to not support them for now. I can play DS over GGPO right now so I’m not missing anything (besides achievements, lol).

    • Justin Archer

Just because you get this game does not mean you have to get DS4. They’re probably going to make it anyway. They didn’t really ask us if we wanted SFXTK they just kinda did it.

      • Disco-lemonade

They specifically said DS4 is dependent on how well DSR does. SFxT could be done cause Street Fighter and Tekken. People are gonna buy it alone for the name, no matter how ass it was on release.

        • John Doe

I’m pretty sure they just said that so they will have some excuse once it doesn’t get made. Because next to no one is going to buy re-release of an 17(?) years old game that’s being played online for free.

        • KubikiriTurkojin

thats what they told the stupid people.

        •  And you’re taking that at face value why?

Does that not sound absolutely absurd to you? One project singlehandedly deciding the fate of another completely independent project?

          • Cat Astrophy

It’s called how every single sequel/prequel is determined? Ever? Two games from the same IP are hardly completely independent projects. They may be made by different teams but it’s the same company’s money and they are using the popularity of the IP on the re-release to determine if it’s worth investing on a much more expensive project (a new title).

          •  Not really, why invest the resources to build a AAA game around a franchise few know about when you could do a limited release and gauge interest based off of that?

        • $35897352

They are lying, simple as that.

    • $18011339

Scanlines. That’s all you need. I don’t have it yet (XBL) but I looked at screenshots with no filter but scanlines and it looks… exactly how MAME, Saturn, and PS1 emulators run the game.

    • $35897352

what do you expect, is Cashcom, they sell you as HD what is actually blur sprites.

  • Lawrence Ohh

BTW, any difference between the darkstalker 3 of this version and already out DLC version of darkstalkers? I’m assuming netplay is about it.

    • $18011339

I hate to be a blunt jerk but this is really easily accessible information that has got a different news story about it every week. That said, no – there’s tutorials, trials, achievements, who knows what other kind of bonus features. This is an actual game with work put into it, not giving people the ISO and a PS1 emulator on their PS3.

    • gbursine

The already released version of ds3, the psx version, was clipped and altered to fit all the data onto a psx disc, and work with psx software.  That being said, there was alot of animations shortened/cut, and frame data altered. This is shooting to be arcade perfect.(we’ll see though)

  • OmNiExiZt

They should sell resurrection for half price to the people who already bought DS3. That right there shows customer appreciation. The reason I didn’t buy DS3 was because it didn’t have online play. I’m glad I waited.

    • OrehRatiug

Why would you buy any PS1 game expecting online play? Do you understand the difference between a new release and running an ISO? That would be like me popping in my copy of WipEout (PS1) into my PS3 expecting the ability to play online when there is no coding for online play because well… its a damn PS1 game.

      • OmNiExiZt

No, I get that. I’m just saying why didn’t they do all of this the first time. They didn’t have to build hype for a game people already wanted. I know they weren’t pressed for time with the DS series because the game has been around forever. All they are essentially doing is getting people to buy the same game again. The first game didn’t have to be a PSX port is all I’m saying. If you know i bought the PSX port, then cut me some slack and give me the new one at some kind of bargain.

  • The gameplay videos of this game will be coming shortly.

  • Moribund Cadaver

FGC: “All new games are crap! The only good FGs were made in 1995!”

FGC: “Re-releasing old crap from 1995? Who cares about that junk! Even if it’s reasonably priced, has lots of extra content, good online, replay servers, youtube uploading! LOL fools we gots roms downloaded off the net! Who pays for games?”

    • Keon Misterr

Just seems like new school and old school players have opposing opinions. Younger guys hate the old shit, and older guys hate the new shit. Either way the FGC just can’t be pleased.

    •  because the FGC is a single functioning entity

    • $35897352

Wow, stop right there fanboy, instead of piss people go buy your 6 copies of this marvelous game that you can get for free on internet and fill the arc of your patron saint Crapcom. Hold that.

      • Justin Archer

you suck at trolling. plz leave

        • $35897352

Shut up and give your money to Cashcom.

        • Cat Astrophy

Your avatar suggests you don’t give a fuck but you clearly do. You expect someone to take the advice of a hypocrite?

          • pootnannies

we’re all hypocrites. but no, don’t take advice from this dude. he’s clearly angry and letting out steam.

    • Because the only “old” game worth re-releasing at this point is CVS2. All the other old games that are worth their salt already got re-releases or updates (KoF 98UM/2002UM, SF2HDR, GGXX R)

If I wanted to play this with online, I’d go on GGPO, where you know, its free.

    • Cat Astrophy

      “has lots of extra content”

Explain this. They didn’t even give us the dip switches. And there’s nothing in the unlockable section that hasn’t already been all over the web.

      “good online” GGPO already available

So we’re missing replay servers (oh wait YOUTUBE)

The youtube uploading thing is neat and I would like to see that on more titles…but typically people who want to upload their matches are using software and capture cards so they can do stuff with text and possibly voice overlays. That or just stream. So back to what I was saying earlier. You’re just getting achievements.

  • Violent_Soma

Is it just me or does the sound of the game feels kinda off? like it sounds far and low, then it kinda picks up? but so far I’m enjoying it, but damn it sure had been a very long time since I last played VS I was like 9 at that time lol

    • Oniros

Yeah, the tracks in the menu don’t loop right.

      • Cat Astrophy

If they can’t get something simple like that right I’m afraid to even jump into a match.

    • $35897352

Lol, Crapcom did it again folks, that greed people ruined a game… again.

      • CptPokerface

” The sound feels kinda off, but so far I’m enjoying it!”

        • Cat Astrophy

          Low standards.

“basic shit that an amateur game developer would get right is all fucked up? still a good game” that’s all I read.

          • CptPokerface

Is it really that big of a deal? Is this all it takes for a game to be ruined? I’m sorry, but it just seems that the people most vocal against capcom are grasping at hairs at this point.

          • Cat Astrophy

It’s the principle behind a company that used to take their games seriously. Instead of maximizing games to make profit, they simply make games to maximize profit.

          • $35897352

Do you know how long it will take to patch it? do you think its right that a company the size of Capcom release an old game and instead of improve it they ADD bugs to it? lets be serious people.

          • CptPokerface

One minor, barely noticeable issue with sound is not enough grounds to say that this game wasn’t taken seriously in it’s development, especially after it was delayed to ensure there were no major bugs or netcode issues, which is far more important. I’ve played it myself and I don’t even notice it. If you have personal issues with the company then fine, but trying to instigate insignificant issues like this makes it seems like you’re just reaching.

          • $35897352

I like when you call “issue” to the sound bug, and then you say “it was delayed…to ensure there were no major bugs”. So what I see is a company that trade bugs for bugs, and we are talking of an OLD game. Tell me if there is not lack of care or competence.

      • CptPokerface

When I say “issue” with the sound, I’m using that term very loosely, as it is not really an issue at all but being made one, and ironically by people who had no intention of buying the game in the first place.

  • mkryu

I just got this game. I can’t seem to do bullet hell with Morrigan. 🙁

    • Cat Astrophy

No fly unfly spam in this. This ain’t mahvel baby

  • gbursine

    ggpo players grinding this game:
as said earlier, the speed isn’t accelerated. the <2f latency isn't detectable/affecting gameplay. Everyone so far is really satisfied with the degree of arcade perfection.

  • Zonder88

Hurray lets all bend over and buy this game so Capcom can have their ways so they can start DS4 with all the donations received from this game!

  • gabbyjay

Hahahah, wow. So much bitching and moaning without any mention of how great these two games are to begin with. Makes complete sense that Capcom is using this game to gauge (and BUILD) interest in a dated franchise before investing time into a sequel.

You throw in a few bucks to get your favorite game at EVO? Chip some more in for Darkstalkers. I’m gonna enjoy the hell out of this on PSN in the meantime.

    •  There’s a difference between donating for a good cause (breast cancer) to donating money to undeserving greedy ass companies with shitty business practices.

    • $35897352

Do it fanboy, enjoy your “new” game, I will enjoy it for free in internet. And no, they aren’t using this game to gauge interest for a sequel, they use this game to make profit from fanboys like you.

      • MuhhPhukka

You throw the word fanboy around like you aren’t one. Stay free faggot. I hope they shut down DS on ggpo so bums like you cant play.

        • $35897352

take it easy fatty, now faggot? Hahaha, bring your sister or ask your mother… stay salt 😉

  • pootnannies

i never could get into this game. i remember playing it in a disneyland arcade like…hella long ago. anyways, this means they’ll finally finish the 3Soe update???

    • $18011339

Great anecdote. I’m going to write a novel based on it

  • undamned

I can’t help but think the growing popularity of Morrigan [shenanigans] in MVC3 will actually increase the probability of people who have never gotten into DS actually giving this game a shot.

    • gbursine

yes, but then they’ll realize the same strategy isn’t viable in this game and change characters.  lol
