On January 19th, a tournament called Genesys 2013 took place in the Philippines. However, the highlight of this article isn’t the tournament, but the winners: 12 year old AK and 13 year old BIFU|Winrich.
In the very first round of the UMvC3 tournament, BIFU|Winrich was sent to losers and he literally had to claw his way to the top using his Wolverine/Doctor Doom/Vergil team. He and his opponent, Palpable Peter, decided to make the grand finals a first to ten. Papable Peter took a demanding 5-1 lead at first, but Winrich (an NYC native) adjusted and ended up taking the set 10-8.
Next up is 12 year old AK, who is no stranger to winning tournaments in the Philippines. Also being knocked into losers at an early stage of the tournament, he too had to fight his way to the top, making it to grand finals. Going up against Hapz, he had to win 2 three out of five sets to become the champion and so he did. Winning 3-2 to reset the bracket and 3-2 again to win the tournament.
We’ve all heard EG|Justin Wong’s story about how old he was when he started playing competitively, then came Noah, the 8 year old prodigy that rocked the stage at EVO 2011. Now, we have AK and Winrich, who are also showing no signs of slowing down. With fighting games being geared more toward an older crowd nowadays, is the younger crowd taking it back? Check out these grand final matches and let us know what you think in the comment section below.
