Mr. Wizard Visits Wakeup SRK Live on January 8th to Reveal the EVO 2013 Game Lineup

Earlier today, our very own Mr. Wizard tweeted out an exciting message for those of us (read: everyone) waiting to hear which games will be included in the lineup for Evolution 2013 later this year. Next week’s installment of Wakeup SRK Live will be devoted to revealing this super-secret information to the public, so be sure to tune in when Wizard joins Keits and skisonic live at 7 PM PST, 10 PM EST on January 8th for the scoop.

But in the meantime, let’s take a look at the current results of the EVO 2013 poll that was created a few months ago. While the powers that be said they would not be a definitive resource for their decision-making, these figures could be fun to speculate over as we wait for the official announcement.

      The main problem for P4A is that BB:CP will probably come out sometime a few months before the next EVO. And there’s a high chance that it’ll kill P4A, something Tokido predicted that will happen. Besides the old BB fans going back to it, it looks to be a massive improvement from the previous BB games and will probably be much better received by the FGC as a whole. Then you face the problem of P4A being accessible but not being deep, so interest in it can only go downhill fast. So P4A not being in the EVO2013 lineup doesn’t sound as far fetched as it seems.

    This new “Two Game per Company Idea” is pretty cool, it would allow smaller scenes to get some exposure. I’m a big Capcom fan, but the idea of 3 of the 6 EVO games being Capcom games bores me.

        Characters are fighting in Melee, how is it now a fighting game?

        It has a balanced 1v1 and 2v2 metagame. A ruleset that has been tested for almost a decade now. And stream numbers that clearly beat out any of the games on that list other than the top 3 (SF,UMVC, KoF).

        No matter how you look at it, Melee should be on the lineup. A better reasoning other than “it’s not a fighting game” would be its requirement to be played on unwieldy CRT TV’s. But of course no one mentions that here because SRK is filled with kids who got raped at Smash in middle school so they got salty and started playing what they thought were “real” fighting games.

          Still behind Soul Calibur. I think that says something. Although even assuming six games and both Smash Bros getting rejected, it comes in at 7th and doesn’t get a returning spot, so in the end we’re both hosed :( . I’m kind of hoping Persona gets in though, it’s significantly different and therefore far more interesting than watching 3 street fighters in the same tournament.

    The obvious mainstream games such as SSF4 and UMVC3 we’ll for sure see there, KOF was big in 2012 I expect it to be bigger now that more people have picked it up since its uproar at EVO. TTT2 I hope sweeps the crowd off their feet like KOF did and draw much more attention to it after EVO is all said and done. MK, what can I say, I mean I still occasionally play it but numbers dont lie. Sleeper games to have a chance at doing something big are P4A and GG it could be a hit and miss for one of them though. My thoughts on Smash is Melee should be seen as a fighting game, as broken as it was in which made it a fighting game it still has competitive edge. Everything isn’t so simple to how people think it is it has a lot of depth. I cant say the same for Brawl though, Brawl was too easy and watered down almost everything in the game which in my eyes wasn’t a competitive game. Melee is very technical in its own right, but hey this is just one mans opinion i’d like to see it shine one last time

    Marvel and SF are guaranted; TTT2 will be great even if the EVO 2011 Tekken 6 had the worse top8. Kof 13 is a great game but the game is dying, I am not sure if there will be a huge number of partecipants this year, unless they give more presents this time.
    MK9 is great but I think Gods among us would be better, a new game, funnier (I think). A west game is really good since it give some support to their developers.
    P4A? personally I don’t like that game but if they believe it can be at EVO, I wont complain about it
    Other games are just…….seriously?

    The funny yet awesome thing about this poll is that 2,3,4,5, and 6 are pretty much the 5 games I’d expect to be at EVO this year, with MK9 if they’re doing 6 again.

    AE 2012 and UMvC3 are a given.

    KoF13 is definitely going to make it because of performance last year.

    TTT2 will probably be the 3D fighter this year.

    P4A, GGAC+R, and BB are all at risk of taking each other’s players, If I could to pick one I’d choose GG in a flash though.

    Smash is a bit of a weird one. Evo Brawl 08 was a disaster of a tournament for a disaster of a game, I don’t think anybody wants to see it back there. Evo Melee 07 on the other hand went really well, it was probably bound for another year if it weren’t for the release of Brawl. Since the post-Brawl Melee revival numbers for Melee have gone way up, but Evo has never let an older game come back like that before so we’ll have to wait and see.

      Wizard has said a few times that there’s a difference in philosophy when it comes to items between Evo (It’s in the game, so they’re on) and the SSB community (No items, Fox only, Final Destination).  I doubt we’ll see it at EVO unless the WiiU Smash game has a tournament mode or something like that.

    Serious note: I REALLY want KOF XIII to be in the main line up, but I  have some doubts about it. I know the community will still hold it down for a side tourney though like they’ve done for years.

      I think the fact that the community is going to show up regardless is actually something that helps KOFXIII compared to other scenes as it almost sort of guarantees a sort of turnout more than some other games.

    KOF – Sure, it gets a lot of votes but there hasn’t been much news about it on SRK since Evo which is about the only thing most people remember. They had better lock down MADKof’s attendance first if they are adding it to the lineup.
    MK9/Injustice – I think MK9 actually has a scene that’s good enough to be a mainstay but with Injustice coming out, I see the interest dropping too much. Possibly Injustice will take it’s place though. And if things don’t work out for Injustice, MK9 can be back the following year.
    P4A/BB – P4A a super popular game in Japan and somewhat popular here. I kinda see it joining the lineup unless the P4A community decides it would rather play BB like last time. 
    Skullgirls – If there ever was a feel good inclusion, this is it.

    Unlikelies

    SFxT – With so many games vying for a spot and the bad taste from last year, it’s going to take a lot to forgive and forget. Oh well, as long as things go well at IPL, it’ll have a good chance to be back on Evo next year.
    DOA5 – A pretty small scene and stepping on TTT2′s toes because the SRK crowd thinks it’s just another 3D game. At least, they’ll have IPL for now.
    VF5:FS – More DOA that DOA5 as far as US is concerned. Also, another 3D game.
    PS Allstars – I see this as an exhibition like TOL but nothing more! But it does have connections.

    Impossibles

    Smash – I seriously doubt that issues in the past have been resolved and they’ve got PSA to fill in that subgenre of FG.
    Digital Rereleases – Not this year. Not when there are so many new games to choose from.
    Divekick – LOL

      I hate that SCV is just written off solely on the basis of being 3D since it’s pretty much the only weapon-based fighter on the market right now. Also PS Allstars is miserably dry 1v1 with the whole only supers hurt you deal so I don’t think it fills the smash spot. (But like you said it’ll probably wind up being an exhibition or side-tournament anyway.)

        It’s not that Melee is especially technical, it’s that the pace at which techniques must be applied is very high. It’s almost comical how hard it is to beat a good Melee player. It’s one of the least fraudulent games I’ve ever played.

    KoF is in because Geographically it makes sense. Evo is in Vegas people.

    MK because part of the reason Evo got burned with SFxT was because they included it when it was too young. It was a gamble which Evo took because, it’s Street Fighter, it’s Tekken, it’s Capcom, what can go wrong? They will shy away from Injustice (and Sony All-Stars) because of this, they want a NRS fighter on their roster, and the MK scene sits more outside of the rest of the fighting game audience, and Evo want to capture that.

    They will reuse the “tournament of legends” brand again this year, but it will be DarkStalkers, not SFII. Hopefully they’ve already confirmed Sako ;)

    SFxT, Injustice, Sony All-Stars will still be there, but exhibitions / invitationals.

    I wish I could put money on the above! :)

    As long as MK, SFxT, DOA and SC are out, I’m kinda happy. 

    Too bad Persona scored so good, but it was certainly because the game was brand new at the time. 

    I think the most reasonable lineup would be: 

    Smash Melee (since it placed first)
    KOF
    MvC
    SF
    Tekken

    For the lance spot I think Divekick is the best choice, since it’s really hype and simple. GG is the other possibility. It’s not clearly bad like Persona (even though they play the same), but it doesnt have what it takes to be in EVO imho, since it’s very old graphically and people grown tired of it.

      MK will probably be in because it is the #1 Non-Capcom game, in terms of attendance at majors.  If you want, check out Frosty Faustings V and the last Seasons Beatings for recent references.

      Though I think that this year’s EVO will be the last for MK 9 (unless Injustice just completely and utterly tanks or they actually DO give MK 9 one more patch.  MK really IS just one patch away from being an awesome game, but NRS doesn’t seem to want to pull the trigger on a patch)

      Inkblot touched on it during an AMA on Reddit (http://www.reddit.com/r/SF4/comments/vxdkc/ima_evo_founder_ask_away/c58g35c).  Basically, the Smash community plays without items because they feel it’s the most fair game possible that way.  EVO staff/leadership believes that if items are in the game, they should be used because that’s what makes Smash Smash.

      Being a mod might hold it back even when those two problems are fixed though, but one can hope.

      Melty Blood is way too hardcore to be on EVO, they rather put more commercial games. America is commercial, so it’s just normal people don’t play Melty Blood here, even though it’s the best and most complete fighting game ever made. I’m ok with that though. Even if America played it, we wouldn’t be able to excel. Hardcore games like that can only be played for real by the Japanese. Sad but true.

      lol did you not see when they had MB at EVO? There was like no one in the audience, tons of people used that maid character and the finals was a maid mirror match. It’s extremely boring game to watch unless you play MB and can appreciate high-level skill in action.

    OMG WOW im surprised how low on the list Dead or Alive 5 is. I mean, this game requires some serious skill. They have counter attacks, holds, grabs. Its so tight. There’s various type of martial arts styles and each charectar has their own completely different way of fighting.. PLEASE PLEASE consider this game more because it is EFFFING AMAZING!! :)

    tch…heh heh heh(nodding head from side to side). for me it matters not ,what other fighting games are picked for 2k13 EVO’s official lineup. only 1 fighting game matters to me and others. that’s KOF.  this EvO’s poll and eVo  2k12 performance of KOF speak for itself. just awaiting on EVO to come out and make it official  for EVO 2k13 fighting games line up. KOF’s destiny for USA will not be deny.

    Tekken Tag 2 AND Street Fighter X Tekken? That may be much Tekken for some people. However I for one, would love to see both at EVO. :)
