Skullgirls: Slightly Different Edition Video Roundup – Podcast and Interview Edition (12/24)

Today’s Skullgirls roundup features several interviews with the Skullgirls team. First, crosscountertv‘s Sanchez sat down with Mike Z to talk about the game’s basic systems and mechanics, as well as why oldschool fighting game fans should be playing this game.

Mike also was the featured guest on Two Tall Guys & The Small Fry recently. They talk in length about the problems the project had, the dangers of giving up your IP, the state of indie game development, and more.

We also have a couple combo videos. The first is a 1v3 touch of death combo with Filia from PhantomMinaX1.

UnlimitedGoju also has a Filia combo to share with us, taking off half of a bar 1v1.

Finally, FatfaceMcGraw gives us an almost touch of death combo 3v3 with Fortune and Peacock.

That podcast is really enlightening on some of the current issues with this gen of games and gaming “journalism”.

The games “journalism” issues stem from the lack of specialists when it comes to specific types of games. In the majority of games journalism organizations, I doubt there are “fighting games specialists” and “first-person shooter specialists” and “puzzle game specialists” who get to focus on the types of games in which they are most knowledgeable. It’s mostly “game enthusiasts” rather than specialists; they enjoy video games in general, but are often asked to evaluate different types of games which they know little about. The it’s much like asking a food critic or fashion/lifestyle reporter to become an embedded wartime journalist in a country they can’t pronounce correctly; they don’t have the regional and cultural background information that would tell them what to look for in terms of reporting. And they’ll probably get themselves into trouble that could have otherwise been avoided…

The games industry knowledge seems to be of the same underlying themes that have been floating around for the last decade; crowd-sourcing, publishing and development budgets, etc. If you’re interested in this, head over to Gamasutra or some independent game developer blogs for more detailed information.

Holy crap… TURN OFF THAT PHONE ALREADY lol

The lead animator, Mariel Cartwright, was on a podcast yesterday as well. They don’t talk exclusively about Skullgirls, but they spend a good amount of time on it. http://www.destructoid.com/sup-holmes-gets-slimy-with-skullgirls-mariel-cartwright-241158.phtml

FatFace’s combo does kill.  He must not have it set to allow death in training mode, so when that happens it leaves the opponent with 1 pixel of life regardless.  Better to try it on a solo character and see the real damage.

Also, he could’ve tossed a slow bomb after the explosion for a little more damage maybe.

“The first fighting game video I made was specifically to make Viscant shut up.”

Mike Z, I love SG. I use Ms. Fortune, but I can get my combos off in real matches.
