Capcom Announces Embrace the Dark, a Darkstalkers Resurrection Character Design Competition

One of the biggest things that the Darkstalkers series is known for is its creative character designs. Now, Capcom is challenging fans of the series to see if they can come up with designs that match the creativity of the originals with their “Embrace the Dark” character design contest for Darkstalkers Resurrection. At stake is some pretty cool Darkstalkers swag as well as the chance to have your creation drawn by Stanley “Artgerm” Lau, the artist who lent his skills to the new artwork for Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike Online Edition and the upcoming Resurrection bundle.

The prize structure reads as follows:

1st Place: A custom made drawing of your character by Stanley “Artgerm” Lau, the artist for Darkstalkers Resurrection, along with one copy of the UDON Darkstalkers Tribute art book and one copy of Pop Culture Shock’s Lord Raptor statue.
2nd-3rd Place: One copy of Pop Culture Shock’s Lord Raptor statue
4th-8th Place: One copy of the Darkstalkers Tribute art book by UDON.

To join, fans can simply hop to this page and fill out the form with the name, monster type, physical description, fighting style, and any additional info for their character. Fans are encouraged to add as many additional details as possible, including their own artwork. Collaborations with other fans are allowed and entries from the unofficial contest held previously by Capcom-Unity moderator Esipiownage are still eligible.

The contest runs up until January 20, 2013 and is open to residents of the United States, Canada, and the European Union only, so get in there as soon as possible and show off your creativity.

  I’m expecting a lot of rainbow colored fursonas with angel wings & unicorn horns, the keyblade from Kingdom Hearts, a trenchcoat or a pack of glowing playing cards like Gambit, some tribal tattoo’s like Jin Kazama, Sonic the Hedgehog’s training shoes, some kind of glowing aura like Dragonball Z… etc

He’s a mystic hybrid foxwolf with one angel wing one demon wing and he used to train under Sephiroth until he got sucked into Darkstalkers one day when he was practicing his amazing unknown Mcguffin magic that was granted to him by his dead father’s mother’s uncle’s best friend’s secret pendent and now he’s married to Felicia after training in Kung-fu under John Talibain and he’s the best fighter ever and can shot hadokens.

      This should be a game in itself “Deviantart: Original Character Do Not Steal All-Stars”
      Rather than having a super meter the objective is to power up by stealing as many of the original character traits of your opponents character as possible till you completely outclass them & become xxXAmodeus Fox – brother of Goku – Dark Sephiroth – the HedgehogXxx or any other combination of clichés. Then you can unleash your ‘Originality’ which would be a guaranteed KO. All set to a soundtrack of Linkin Park & Drowning Pool.
      In this system the characters that might start with the coolest features would have an advantage early on in a match but would stand to lose more if they got that valuable trait stolen.

this might not be a contest on true originality, but one where the most recurring idea gets implemented for sales sake…..I can’t imagine their internal guys don’t have enough creativity combined to make an extended roster for the next game……my bet is that their a little gun shy, and just desperately want the next to succeed. Or I’m just Crazy. And I’ll be crazier and say that that region thing is so they try to understand westerners better………I’m bored.

  Says you can enter in ‘teams’ of up to 3 – draw your drawings, and have someone write up some fluff for them. Most of the entries in the unofficial contest were horrible – there were literally like 3 decent ideas. This thing is gonna have… what, 10 winners? Seems like anyone has a shot.
