The Basics by Guitalex – Neutral Game Featuring Skullgirls

Guitalex is back to teach you all about the basics of fighting games. Today’s lesson is the neutral game. He explains what it is and what different characters do in a neutral situation. As always, he uses Skullgirls as his teaching tool, going over its entire roster in his examples. The video uses actual match footage as examples so you get to see all the concepts talked about in motion.

Long reach has nothing to do with “priority” of a move.

Long reach is good at reaching far away.
Hitboxes that are disjointed from hurtboxes are good at hitting things cleanly.

I find this a little odd – once one player is applying pressure, the neutral game is no longer being played.   This video makes it seem like pressure is part of neutral, and it’s really not.  Once one character has enough advantage to start pressuring, they’ve “won” the neutral game until something happens to reset the situation (usually an opponent successfully using the right kind of defensive options such as pushblocking, jumpouts, throw teching, or reversals).
