WW.MCZ|Infiltration on Defeating MCZ|Daigo Umehara at the Street Fighter 25th Anniversary Grand Finals

Continuing their coverage of the Street Fighter 25th Anniversary event this past weekend, Zhi sat down with the winning half of the Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition ver. 2012 grand finals, Mad Catz’ own Seonwoo “Infiltration” Lee. The discussion bounces around over the course of the interview, from how Infiltration feels winning a car and more money this year than anyone has earned in a single season of fighting game competition to his sets against teammate Daigo Umehara. He also credits his training with Laugh, also of Western Wolves and Mad Catz, as a major factor in his win over Daigo.

comparing daigo´s ryu with laugh´s ryu??? oh god.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_TIC7WNRSMFBSCLF6OR6JQJAAZA sb

I believe my teammate Laugh has one of the best Ryus in the world…I just went about playing that match as usual.
      It worked didnt it

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_JCPSC4QXY6QVC3VPBNBJDZAFMU kao

laugh plays infiltration all the time so maybe he knows the player better and puts up a decent fight against infiltration, but laugh is definately not up there.

        • pootnannies

i’d say he’s up there simply because he plays the best people a lot. i don’t think he’s the best or anything but he’s pretty good.

        • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_TIC7WNRSMFBSCLF6OR6JQJAAZA sb

Nah i dont think Laugh is on Daigo’s level either but still it worked for him didnt it

            Real talk, from experience.

Laugh is a great Ryu player, no question about it.  Anyone who says otherwise would be stupid, or have never played him to know.  He is definitely not Daigo’s level, but he blew me up in Korea.

But he’s strong, and Infiltration has always had a great sparring partner to learn the matchup.  Really, between studying tape of Daigo and playing Laugh, he would have no excuse to lose against Daigo in the long run unless Daigo leveled up enough that his gameplay could destroy the world.

One other thing about Laugh is his abilities with pocket characters that you never see him play.  I have played his Fei which is very solid, and is probably why Infiltration did alright against Mago and Fuudo.  He also has a decent Rose IIRC.

No, Laugh isn’t going around winning tournaments with his Ryu play, but he certainly isn’t a slouch at all, and he has been beneficial in Infiltration’s ascension to success.  So anyone who scoffs at him crediting Laugh really just doesn’t know.

          • Johnson Nguyen

“But he’s strong, and Infiltration has always had a great sparring

Time for Daigo to do the same with Tokido’s Gouki so he can learn the match-up.

          • http://twitter.com/MssngPrsnC4NT Corey Lanier

@google-d4f92462b3c2015f01c64da83ef800c1:disqus Which would be incredible.  Honestly, Infiltration/Daigo is GREAT for Street Fighter, and I’m prepared for some more hype between the two later down the line.

And you know Daigo isn’t stepping back and tucking his tail.  This is what Daigo and the rest of the top players need.  Time to stop stagnating and holding onto copypasta play.

Laugh speaks perfect English. Is he from Korea or America?

  • ec0ec0

Many people has been talking about the ” huge” ajustement that infiltration did while others have been saying that they didnt see that ajustement and now we have an answer: infiltration was playing the matchup (i am not going to talk about that again…) and abusing the advantages of that matchup better the second time that they played. And like i have already said: have any of you ever heard something like: “the advantage of the matchup appears as the set progresses” because i belive in this statement and there are examples of it like the final of the 2nd topanga A league where ryu(daigo) and fei long(fuudo) where matched at the begining but as the set progressed fuudo began to dominate http://www.eventhubs.com/news/2012/ja... there are of course more examples. This could have been, only could, important in the set that infiltration and daigo played, apart from the adaptation thing.

    • http://twitter.com/LoyalSol Troy Loeffler

The match up itself is even.  I mean Tokido has been getting blown up by Daigo for the last 4 years and he got 2-0ed at the same tournament.

Infiltration did adjust to what Daigo was doing by not allowing Daigo to get into a position where he could pull of the same stuff he did in Winners finals.  Sometimes the biggest adjustments are the hardest to spot.

Even in a slightly disadvantaged match up, you don’t lose 6-0 unless you got outplayed.

      • ec0ec0

In my firt comment i did say, at the end, that infiltration did adapt but, before that, i tried to show my opinion of the importance of the matchup advantage in long sets. The matchup is not even at all, thought. I have already spend enough time taking with others about the matchup using arguments about the replays of the 9 games that they played, like many other people have do (with their on opinion, of course) in the comments of older news about their match. Despite of what may seem i really like infiltrations play, like everyone i guess… sorry if my english is strange.

        • http://profile.yahoo.com/5L6WUQCA5FGEO4B4NRVGERDDMM Яша

The match-up is not fair at all? Get outta here… Why is it when some top player loses the first things to come out of peoples mouth is ‘THIS MATCH-UP WAS BULLSHIT, IT”S NOT FAIR AT ALL, IF NOT THAT *enter player name here* WOULD HAVE BODIED THAT FOOL!11 ZOMG ZOMG!11′.
Ryu-Akuma match-up is at least 5-5 if not slightly in Ryu’s favor, you may look at those replayes all you want, then go back and look at all the replayes when Daigo and Tokido played. Or Daigo vs Eita, and so on and so forth. Akuma has air fireball, Ryu has a better ground fireball (more damage) and a much better EX firball as well as supirior footsies (his normals, beside Akumas sweep are better, look up the frame data). And of course, Akuma does 1 mistake, he eats a combo that drains up to 35-40 percent of his life without the Ryu player even using meter or Ultra. An uneven match-up my ass, go study the game. Daigo got outplayed, period. And what’s amazing is that he got owned through footsies, that is a hell of a thing to do and it is entirely Infiltrations achievement and not some mystirious match-up advantages.

          • ec0ec0

Is strange that, after you being so agresive without a reason agains me, i am going to say that i agree with you… if you are wondering why, in my second comment i wrote, before your reply, “The matchup is not even at all” not ” the matchup is not FAIR at all” (as you, i think that the second statement is not true). I am spanish and english is just a secondary language for me, so when i wrote that ( “the matchup is not even at all”) i thought that a was saying something like “the matchup is not 5-5 at all” but if i was not saying that then i am sorry for making you angry…

      • Bill Cosby

One example like that isn’t definitive proof of a matchup. The THEORY is that while akuma has way WAY more options than ryu, his lower health makes up for it. I would argue that is not the case, as would many others.

        • bliss03

but take note, that akuma’s health is not as bad as seth’s.. i still think ryu and akuma is in akuma’s favor.. akuma and seth have the most advantageous and  ridiculous moves in this game that’s why they have poor health, especially seth..

          • Bill Cosby

Don’t forget that they’re both top 3 chars.

          • BoozerX

Ryu is not top tier, Daigo is.

  • fphed

I really feel like after watching the winners final a couple of times that Infiltration kinda sand bagged it. He played pretty bad compared to how he normally plays, made so many mistakes, missed obvious punishes and sure Daigo played good, but not THAT good. Of course it’s ridiculous that he would drop those matches on purpose, but damn it sure felt like it.

    • pootnannies

nope. it was clear that daigo got into his head. daigo punished everything he did and he was hella scared. that last throw that killed akuma tells you everything. daigo saw that inf. was scared and didn’t know what to do. luckily he came back and got his confidence again in loser’s finals and the exact opposite seemed to happen in grand finals. there were some crazy daigo comebacks but not enough to take a single game. it was kinda of a let down. 0-6 isn’t as interesting as like 6–5 or something close to keep the suspension up. once daigo was dl’d it was over from the first match.

    • Bill Cosby

It was for 25 thousand fucking dollars. Nobody is going to ‘bag’ anything you moron.

  • pootnannies

to me personally, it seemed daigo hardly jumps and should have just played hella scrubby to mess with infiltration in grand finals. infiltration took advantage of daigo’s playstyle. he was so downloaded and knew that daigo would just fireball and use f+hp to break his FA because that’s what killed daigo at EVO. worked in winner’s finals in daigo’s favor 3-0 but grand finals being 0-6 for daigo says a lot about infiltration. that dude knows your patterns and what you’ll do at certain parts of the screen and i think the only way around that is to kind of do stupid shit and get anti-aired so he relies less on fireballs and has change the way he keeps ryu out, etc..

    • wconcepts

Daigo took most of his damage throwing out jabs that Infiltration countered with hadoken or sweep. Not sure what he was fishing for with those jabs, and a few strongs, but they sort of did him in once Infiltration had the pattern figured out. The f+hp gimmick wasn’t going to get Daigo far. It only really payed off in the first few rounds in winners.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Yan-Zhao/10516382 Yan Zhao

Um, from what I’ve seen, Daigo took most of his damage from throwing reckless fireballs which Infiltration read and got a jump-in roundhouse combo off of.

  • chipsndips

What he could do: Blast Gagnam Style in that car

What he should do: Blast the Super Street Fighter IV theme and honk the horn, which would be customized to go “MEEEESSSSSSAAAAAAAATSSSSSSSSSUUUUUUUUU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jon-Slayton/563921933 Jon Slayton

    Doesn’t even have his license….

Omg Infiltration stop playing SF so much!

    • http://twitter.com/MssngPrsnC4NT Corey Lanier

A lot of Koreans don’t even bother.

Some do and never even drive after they get it.  When your public transportation is so GDLK and space to drive and park a car is so limited, you start weighing your options more.

      • Johnson Nguyen

To add to this comment, that’s also the reason why the Japanese typically don’t drive as well. That, and them being a bicycle society. I hear that’s the case with New York City too… minus the bicycle society bit.

  • xanderglz

Now that I think about it, maybe Infil is right. Aside from Daigo/Valle/Laugh, there hasn’t been a lot of people in the US using Ryu on a high level. The US needs more Cammys, Yuns and Vipers to start countering the Akuma and Ryu matchups #Kappa

  • Bavo Bruylandt

Are they a couple? No seriously, it just occurred. Reminds me of that South Park movie where Infiltration is Satan.
    MESSATSU

  • http://twitter.com/g13flat9th Mr. anon

I can’t hate on Infiltration anymore after his gangnam. lol

  • R Skse

Its definitely a better training regimine having a skilled partner to play against then just going to the arcade every morning and fighting the CPU alone…

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Kevi-Johnson-el/100001847029873 Kevi Johnson-el

Do you really think Daigo fights Cpu everyday?

    • Garrett Jones

In my opinion, the best way to start a fire is to use kindling.

    • Bill Cosby

      Nobody does that.

    • http://twitter.com/Thraphelga le sun

Arcade culture in Japan isn’t anything like you’ve seen down at your local movie theater. Even Daigo said himself that there are skilled opponents there as early as 10 AM, allowing him to start his training early in the day. It’s a complete joke that anyone these days still thinks one can get good at fighting games by playing against CPU, much less get as good as Daigo.

      • R Skse

I admit thats a wrong assumption about playing vs the arcade mode alone, after watching the Diago interview again he clearly said there was other people there[of course]. Even so, my point still stands: Having a steady partner with pro level skills is much better than playing some random ass players or less frequent who are all probably a little too free to be good practice anyway. I was rooting for Diago to reclaim his spot again, but Infiltration definitely has the edge.

    • BoozerX

Damn, you are not intelligent at all.

      • R Skse

Is that it? I read a couple of your posts you retarded bitch, Its funny you wrote the EXACT same dumb ass sentence in another thread. ^

        • BoozerX

Because is for the same reason. Duh.

          • R Skse

Ooh Ok, makes sense now haha…youre about 8 yrs old arent you?

          • BoozerX

The “duh” was to help you understand. It worked, good for you.

  • Bill Cosby

I have no doubt that his experience with Laugh helped him out a lot, but to imply that laugh is in any way CLOSE to the lvl of Daigo is laughable.

  • IrregularHunterX

Well, that’s his opinion.  Maybe he really has a deep respect to his teammate.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Yan-Zhao/10516382 Yan Zhao

Sorry Infiltration, but Daigo has a better Ryu than Laugh hands down.

However that does change the fact that these 2 play each other all the time, so Infiltration has a really solid knowledge of the Ryu matchup.

  • http://www.tehfamine.com/ Glen “Famine” Swan

I’m telling you man. Infiltration was sleeping before the match and he just had to wake up.

    http://t.co/dMHmRFnr

  • Steven Duong

Many of you forget Laugh beat Valle in Canada Cup. Maybe he’s not up to Daigo’s Ryu but he’s no slouch.

  • KubikiriTurkojin

lol you guys are stupid, not on daigos level. the difference between laugh and daigo is so small that they both would have trouble against each other in a mirror match. and i think laughs ryu does better against infils gouki and daigo ryu does. you guys need to get off daigos dick.

    • Zonder88

Except Infiltration beats Laugh 3-0 every time they met in a US major.

      Nice try though, dickrider.

  • Austin Riddle

I wonder if Pepsi is big in Korea…..

  • xelad1

Everyone getting so mad over the Laugh vs. Daigo comparison.  Laugh places well at international tournaments and beats other top players consistently.  If that isn’t a top Ryu then I don’t know what is?  Being on Daigo’s level is irrelevant   Just having one of the world’s best Ryu’s as your training partner means that you will know the matchup better than anyone who doesn’t have that at their disposal.

At the top level the differences in skill are so minute.

  • Bavo Bruylandt

He should put a brand on that water and become rich.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/IZSHGLMZF5LLNM6LUONVJ6CHX4 jo c

Congratulations to infiltration. I felt that Daigo didn’t take any risks. I think he jumped at infiltration only a few times during the grand finals set. He kept playing footsies and infiltration took advantage of it with akumas hit and run game play. Going back and seeing those matches it felt that Daigo was becoming more conservative as the matches went on. The same sort of thing happened with Ricky and Wong at CEO. Check the videos. Vs Wong he started being hesitant with dp and jump ins and Wong capitalized on that by mixing him up more and abusing rufus pressure.

    • Ahoyopl

Yeah, especially after that OS Ultra failed against Infiltration’s Teleport. That was the turning point. After that he stated saving all his meter for super. No fadc, no ex fireballs or ex dps. Didn’t do any “UmeShoryus”.
No whiff punishing because he was afraid of kara demon, which to be fair Infiltration only hit Daigo with at EVO because Daigo did a set-up to make Akuma’s sweep whiff. (empty jump s.lk).
And of course relying on regular fireballs a bit too much, which is where most of his damage was taken.

  • LvL3MashFactor

Congrats! Infiltration hard work and dedication reap the benefits man. Crazy he won a car and cant drive….Capcom should mod the car so Infiltration could hook up his joystick and drive (raging demon to start the car lol)

…and can we get Infiltration’s new car in a bonus sage in the next SF game?! make it happen lol.
