Street Fighter x Tekken – The Limits of Power Pandora Compilation

TheSoulOfBasement15 has posted a multi-character, multi-player video featuring the Pandora mechanics in Street Fighter x Tekken. Widely regarded as a useless mechanic, this video shows off some nail biting near wins and incredibly damaging combos using Pandora. Many of these wins come from activating Pandora on reaction, which seems to be one of the smartest ways to activate it, guaranteeing you a powerful super punish.

While this looks cool and all, I do have my worries about what this will do to SFxT’s meta-game. I mean, if the mechanic starts to become viable, will it force people to start turtling more because they’re afraid of getting hit by it?

  that’s an interesting point. but if you can’t confirm the kill obviously you’re in a tough spot. your opponent only has to hold out for so long…and of course both players access to the mechanic. maybe it’ll effect team makeups? also I have almost zero knowledge of this game. somebody good probably knows this stuff already :/

  It’s already true, but you never see it in play because few people are going to risk using Pandora in the first place, so you’ll never see any anti-pandora play or even Pandora bait.

  I don’t think this is an issue. People don’t stop pressuring Ryu or Ken on wakeup in SF4 or SFxT (regardless of FADC or switch cancel). What’s the difference between a wake up DP xx switch cancel and a wake up Pandora? Pandora is much cooler

      Comparing Pandora to Dark Phoenix is stretching it too far don’t you think? It’s fairly easy to run from or time out Pandora. Using it as a reversal requires a lot of forethought prediction/reaction not trap setups, guessing games and crouch A. Pandora is a one shot deal. You do it right you MAY win otherwise you die. If people can play UMvC3 with X-Factor and Phoenix….

        Not really… Dark Phoenix gets pretty decent boosts in multiple stats even without X-Factor, and she still can be swapped out for another team member to heal if need be (provided there’s a teammate left of course).
        
        With Pandora, you sacrifice your teammate (so no healing), and once the Pandora timer runs, that’s it, you drop dead, and even if you’re mid combo WITH the life lead you still lose; can only win by KO.

        Phoenix may lose health, but she still won’t die without a hit, be it chip or direct. Also, she has healing field. AND if she dies, you still may have 1 or 2 characters in the back.
        
        Don’t forget that any gems you may be using to increase the utility of Pandora effectively limit your options during the match because they deny access to any gems you may use before you activate into Pandora.
        
        Pandora is far more risky than anything in Marvel. It is X-Factor with free meter, except you sacrifice team dynamic and you lose when the timer runs out. Even with the life lead.

This breaks so many rules about making a good combo video, minute and a half long intro for no reason; KO screen wastes at least a minute that can be edited out. Not to mention horrendous sound levels with that … song.

Interesting stuff at least.

Wow, this combo vid was the last place I’d expect to hear any kind of Final Fantasy XIII-2 music..

Anyways, Pandora becoming more viable isn’t necessarily a bad thing. It’s still a mostly situational thing at the end of the day and the player who wants to use it has to plan ahead of time to do so. The meta game should be fine since Pandora is a desperate, last minute attempt at taking a round or the match with a super high damage combo.

Ironically, Pandora’s power is very limited at current state.
Some guys like Jin, Hugo, Marduk, Ogre, Rolento pretty much waste all Pandora meter just with Supers(without any gems).
Thankfully, meter time has increased slightly, but that’s not enough.
Capcom should do something with Pandora, otherwise it will be dead mechanic.

The situations a see in the video do not happen much in reality. I mean, when you use Pandora people run away and they can do it pretty easily. In this video the opponent fights back and gets punished. Also, I see them using Pandora Extension gem. That gem is good but it shouldn’t be necessary for the mechanic to be viable.

  Obviously, it’s difficult for you to comprehend what’s going on in those videos. Look at the first five examples. Two of them were combo extensions Juri > Rufus and Ibuki > Vega. That’s not escape-able. The other three were reads and reactions. To of them were to counter meaty pressure and the other one was an anti air. These are not wildly uncommon; they happen several times a match :

  With the new patch, rolls are unsafe, making running away a lot harder to do.
  
  Could you imagine if you activated pandora on reaction to a roll? With the change in position of your partner coming in, you could easily catch someone into a huge combo.

    Ohhhh, I like that. I’ve been thinking about OS’s that would be buffered Supers in the roll direction but a normal string in the regular get up spot. Pandora on reaction to a roll would be so sick – great idea!

    Of course someone as unobservant and closed-minded wouldn’t notice that many of those Pandora in that video ARE FROM REAL MATCHES. This isn’t a combo video; it’s a collection of match footage and combo video stuff from multiple users. Hint: Look at my username and re-watch the video.

FYI Pandora has zero start up. You can punish a lot of stuff if your situation is right barring you have the RIGHT character ready to sacrifice, the meter, and sub 25% hp.

  That’s cool. I always thought of it as a slow move (based solely on the animation) but I’ll definitely look into it as a punish option. I like the idea behind that as well. A comeback mechanic that isn’t necessarily invincible on startup, but is quick enough to punish. A smart man’s Ultra? Don’t hate if I am incorrect here, I could be way off
