Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition ver. 2012′s Unblockables Explained by Western Wolves.Mad Catz’ Laugh and Infiltration

Earlier this morning, Vesper Arcade uploaded a video produced by Laugh and Infiltration of Western Wolves and Mad Catz that dives into the latest hot button issue in the Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition ver. 2012 world: unblockables. Their experimentation has led to a better understanding of why these attacks exist in the first place, and what can be done to limit their effectiveness as the game’s time on the competitive scene continues.

How often does a situation like this happen in an actual fight anyway? It seems pretty situational aside from the Akuma vortex stuff.

it happens in every round in every fight. that’s how often. there are ways to get out like backdash or FA dash but if they do OS you still get caught. unfortunately, if they get rid of these so called unblockables, offense will get worse. as stupid as this unblockable shit is, they need to fix something else so offensive momentum can exist. just my 2 cents.

If the center changing glitch was actually the cause of unblockables and “were to be fixed”, ideally it’ll remove unblockable setups but leave cross ups to still be ambiguous, just without the 1 frame window on blocking. Well that’s “ideal”.

Who knows what could fuck up

Though being forced to have red parry timing without focusing out on every jump in is kinda ridiculous

      • Kufuu

Damn that sounds like a whole lot of crap. D: If a game needs something like this to keep the offensive game somewhat strong then that’s some arguably bad game design.

Totally bad game design if that’s the case. I am certain it’s not. But this bullshit is another reason why I dropped this game and don’t understand why it’s still so popular and get’s a free pass while other games with less problems get such shit here

You mean, how often does a THROW happen in an actual fight? Do you play this game?

  • KubikiriTurkojin

what about back then forward on the same frame the move hits?

This was explained a while ago in one Episode of First attack by James Chen, that they aren’t really unblockables but “Hard-to-block-ables”.

That’s the kind of crap you can expect from jumpy 2D games. Hur da dur, jumping over, every frame counts hur da dur.

its not a glitch, its the way the game is meant to work. Its quite ridiculous, but theres no glitch to fix. What they could to do is to add some buffer to the blocking, like in the SF2 series. that would require an entire rebalancing of the game, however.

We know its not a glitch, we also know the game was made this way and in general we know the kind of crap we can expect.

Technically though, if they did a throw and cross up the other guy could press back so he blocks and then block the other way when his character’s hit boxes move forward.

    • Bill Cosby

How can you possibly assume this is the way the game was intended to work? Holding forward on the stick moves your character BACKWARD. That is obviously not intentional.

You can MAYBE argue that its not a glitch and just faulty design, but whatever, you’re splitting hairs.

The point is I guarantee that this is not something the devs intended, it was something that was overlooked.

If every thing blocks easily then there will be no point of offence left in ssf4 ae. You will see traditional hadoken hadoken hadoken  …. shoryuken where people will always play from distance.

    • Bill Cosby

Its not ‘blocks easily’. All of these setups still lead to ambiguous 50/50 situations. That’s fine. What’s not fine is a jump in looking perfectly blockable but actually NOT.

  • Chomsky Zinn

is this why Ono talked about another re-balancing?

  • Garrett Jones

I’m surprised the guys at hit box arcade haven’t made a video about how the unblockables don’t affect them because of how easy it is to move from back to forward.

       rofl indeed

  • Bill Cosby

I was hoping this video would explain something we didn’t already know. You’ve let me down, Korean overlords.
