it means 20 mins of ads after every match

it also means Daigo coming to America more often. I hope POONGKO gets to attend every IPL street fighter tourney, he’s the one that fans love to cheer for. Remember his Evo 2011 moment and victory dance after winning the Korean LG tourney?

IGN Pro League is known for bringing all-star Korean starcraft 2 players, such as the elite GSL players. If they could bring Poongko and Infiltration, that would be awesome. Both talented and DEDICATED players that practice hard, but financially poor. Poongko is having problems right now according to sources from CafeID, where Poongko played a lot.

So overall, we’ll get a ton of ads, but if it gets Poongko and Gootecks out of poverty I’ll accept that.

*** NO RETARDED CONTINUATION RULE PLEASE LEAVE THAT SHIT TO MLG***

      • FGC Updates

needs a longer game format though. 2 games is still too random and no counterpicking or some rule to prevent counterpicking then counterpicking the counterpick etc -_-..

        • MikeTysonQuotes

I have a feeling that whoever was hired to run the fighting games at IPL will have a lot of power to run things as they want. It’s a new project, it’s ok to try different things and take calculated risks.

If they hired say, Gootecks, and Gootecks wanted to run First to 4 for all of top 8, and he used the argument that a premier top 8 with the best of the USA, Canada, Japan and Korea deserves longer sets, I’m positive David Ting from IPL will see the wisdom in that.

First to 4 would pass easily for top 8, considering that matches in fighting games take much less time than in starcraft 2, and WAY LESS time than in League of Scrubs.

  • http://twitter.com/I3rok3n_Sword Brett (ブレット)

Welp, MLG is going to be mad as fuck.

Does anyone know if IPL is in the red and losing money every year like MLG? Wouldn’t be surprised if they aren’t, seems to be run by much more competent people.

      • CyberShinobi

What’s your source on MLG being in the red?  Couldn’t find anything specific that outlined MLG, IPL, or DreamHacks financial standings.

        • Chocofluffy

There have been interviews with Sundance (CEO) who has said that in the past MLG was break even to losing money to the point that he was pouring his own salary back into the company. However in the last few years though it has been break even / minor profit.

IPL’s David Ting has stated before that they are losing money but as they are part of a larger organization and view it as new market as long as they can justify their expenses it is ok.

I take it that the reason they could not get Marvel is strictly because of the License?  I love to watch them play instead of me playing it though.

      • Tekknight

Good catch! I was at first a tiny bit worried. Now I’m worried for MARVEL. If the pros can’t make money off of it, they won’t practice as much. Granted, the pros find the broken stuff faster than us regular players, so w/out them to emulate it will take a longer time to reach the end game where the tiers are pretty much determined for good. 10 more years?

      • ReoAyanami

Most people don’t realise that esport organisations have to pay for the license to have games in their event. Since it’s unlikely that Capcom would have the right to lease out marvel characters to tournament organizers, a license would have to be negotiated with marvel. Namco is already fine with having their games in esports so that’s probably why SFXT got in easily.

I do wonder if MLG and IPL have exclusive license though. That does mean no games will be on both of their rosters at the same time.

  • http://twitter.com/novriltataki Fighting Game News

Why did they take SFXT over UMVC3? eSports is all about pleasing the spectators and it’s weird to take the Capcom title with the least ratings than the one with the most. I think it’s just a part of the deal that they gonna help promoting SFXT (you know, that game that is built for infinite additions of paid content) and Capcom are probably saving UMVC3 as an exclusive for a bigger eSports fish.

    • http://twitter.com/srslygtfo Mr. X

nah, skill can’t be involved, SFxT is on the roster.

    • ddddddddd ddddddddd

I think SFxT is probably more likely to sell more copies at this point than UMVC3 – thus Capcom’s support

  • Bama_X

To be fair this is V.2013 of SFxT, so it’s worth giving it a chance.  Lol no wonder all the pros are still practicing SFxT and saying that this a good game (I kinda belive them).

  • CyberShinobi

Capcom wouldn’t let MLG use it’s games, but it will let IPL?!  Something smells funny!  MLG has been featured in the New York TImes, Huffington Post, and Forbes.  Why would you make the deal with the “esports” league that no knows and not the one that has more potential for better impact?!  If they were really trying to see a bigger competitive scene why the need to makes deals in the first place?  Other tournaments run without Capcom’s consent every day.  Which leads me to believe they don’t care about “pushing the fighting scene forward” and their focus is instead on the money gained from this partnership.

With DreamHack and MLG partnership announced I wonder if Capcom will allow MLG to use it’s games next year.

    • d3v

MLG hasn’t really gelled well with the FGC in the past. Meanwhile, IPL is a newer league and has so far, seemed more accommodating towards the FGC.

      • CyberShinobi

IPL = MLG.  IPL tries to run the same games as MLG and even tried
breaking into the fighting game scene at the same time.  To me MLG has
established themselves the past three years as the better of the
“esports” league.  Seems like they were given a lot of crap for not running Capcom games when it wasn’t up to them.  The only thing IPL has done for fighting games so far is SFxT exhibition when the game first came out and you can bet Capcom paid them to do it.

        • http://twitter.com/VAStreamMonster Marty

No.  IPL is actually talking with community members and getting their feedback.  MLG runs itself as a dictatorship.

          • CyberShinobi

How do you figure?  What would you say Arturo Sanchez was doing as FG director?  I’ve heard interviews with many different players saying that MLG has been very accommodating to the players.

Has IPL contacted you directly?  How do you know they have been talking to the community?  Did they send you a survey or something?

          • http://twitter.com/oBLACKSTARo oBLACKSTARo

Dr. Dogg is a long-time DOA die-hard community member, and he works directly with IPL, which announced it had DOA on its lineup

    • http://www.squidoo.com/fightinggamesonline thec0re3@Fighting Games Online

To me MLG is like EA looking to swallow up popular competitive games so they can be this giant powerhouse in esports. If we’ve learned anything from EA its that that sort thing doesn’t work and a lot of good companies have shutdown because of it.

    • ATL_Rhythmik

From what I was told, MLG wanted Capcom to make more changes to the balance of the games and Cap said nah. Dude said he used to work for MLG, but hell he could have just been trolling.

    • 1pacheco1

idk bro i always thought it was because mlg drug tests lol real talk cant stay off that ganja blaze it allday erryday

    • JasinWalraven

The fact that huffing and puffing post featured MLG is enough warrant never watching a MLG event.

      • CyberShinobi

So Forbes and New York Times don’t have a clue?  o.O  Let’s be serious, MLG has been doing something right if they are being considered by credible sources such as these to be featured in there news/issues.  When it comes to the acceptance of competitive video games, whether fighting/rts/fps/moba, I just feel like MLG has being doing a better job then IPL and should have been given the Capcom go to feature it’s games.

  • http://twitter.com/Vothsair Irving

    Ya ya but when’s mahvel?

  • Rahavic

When’s Marvel? No, all trolling aside is Marvel just a game that this company (and that’s exactly what it is) doesn’t see as something that’s as presentable to the general public? I understand Street Fighter as a whole is a lot more approachable to anyone who isn’t too up to date on the genre or new to it overall with SF2 having been such a big game for most of any gamer’s early memories. I’ve always seen Street Fighter as kind of the baseball of the genre in the sense that regardless of who is and who isn’t a big sports fan I’d say a good 90% or higher of people know 3 strikes your Out, 3 Outs the teams switch sides, the pitcher is the one throwing the ball to the batter who has to hit it and the ball is thrown to the base where the player is running. There’s a lot more involved yes in that and that’s just to give a general analogy of the point I’m trying to make but that’s just the way I’ve always viewed it. Is Marvel just the, lets say, football of the genre? Most people kind of have an idea of what’s going on but it’s understandable that a lot of people see a play and hear a penalty and kinda just go “Ok I don’t know what happened there, but that guy got hit hard as hell and that looked cool.” Just something I was thinking of. Also could it possibly be that said companies also see the Street Fighter players who overall have the bigger sponsorships and then look at the better of the Marvel bunch and kinda say to themselves, “….not really sure about these Marvel guys, they get rowdy a lot and don’t seem to be as presentable as we would like right now for our initial venture”?

Overall happy we got our foot in the door, well not most of us but I’m excited to see how everything goes. Just got me the thinking about the Marvel side of it all in a neutral way really not taking sides or making any This Game > That Game kind of thing out of it.

    • de1irium

Including Marvel means including Disney in the negotiation process.  Probably much more involved.

      • Rahavic

Oh yeah I know everything else thats implicated I just had written enough already there, wasnt gonna go into all that. Wanted to just stick to the the games accessibility/watchability to new audiences and a company’s opinions on players/first impressions while going into this endeavor for the first time. Theres hundreds of other things that can be easily brought up.

That is a good point though. Capcom’s IPs are Capcom’s, they can use them in whatever way they see fit, but involving outside parties’ IPs it definitely involves participation on everyone’s behalf for something like that to occur. Good point.

        • http://twitter.com/VAStreamMonster Marty

Marvel characters are a hot commodity, and I’m sure there are licenses and other issues before we would see Marvel at IPL.  That’s my two cents at least.

  • LvL3MashFactor

DOA over Tekken? I don’t understand this really. Then again I don’t know if they were trying for Tekken and Namco said no. I can imagine that Green Arcade players could get sponsored by Starcraft sponsors. We’d get high level international competitive Tekken play. I’m calling it right now a Streetfighter player will when the first DOA IPL tournament (like GamerBee Canada Cup).

I’m for Esports for FGC because it gives us structure to further grow the community. Having majors all year long are great but there is a limit if you don’t win. I’m not saying we hit that limit or things aren’t just peachy as they are. It would be cool for a fighting game player to live off sponsorships and tournament winnings.

Anyway just my opinion hope this goes well

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/4EON46KCPN6LBVESWEV6CLKYBE PureYeti

A street fighter player didn’t won the first DOA IPL tournament. A DOA player did

    • Bama_X

I think MLG got TTT2 on lock!  And imo this is very good news for DOA, Team Ninja and their community.  They can advertise promote and push DOA to the sceptics.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/B26WEPVSGFCJO2FADTXKGNTV2U Brordia Brord

Fuck IGN and everything they stand for.

    • Heavy_D_KOF

      Why?

  • magnetoOldschool

    I RATHER SEE MVC2.

TEKKEN WOULD BE BETTER FIT FOR LINEUP AS WELL.

BUT, LIKE SOMEONE SAID, THIS TYPE OF NEWS REALLY ISNT ANYHING SPECIAL BECAUSE, AGAIN… “Nothing, for the majority of fighting game players.as for sponsored players, more money.”

players should be more concern with spreading the wealth /pot to at least top 32/top 64, for news like this to even be relevant. “For the so called community” not just the hand full of sponsored players. Not hating just saying. Aren’t these type of tournaments already expensive anyways?

  • ReoAyanami

Great step forward for FGC. I look forward to the tournament.

  • ScorpiusJones

as long as they dont completely destroy what makes the scene fun, the players and organizers deserve to be properly compensated for their efforts.

  • http://twitter.com/noosetester Henrik Persson

what exactly does exclusive mean? are they going to throw a shitty hissy fit if other organizations  arrange AE tournaments? the fact that they mention EVO specifically rather than organizations in general makes me worried. like all that wacky starcraft bullshit.

SFxT being in is probably on capcom. like, have SFxT or else you can’t have AE.

    • http://twitter.com/TBM24x Chris B

It means IPL will be the only league to have it. And that affects nothing that currently exists.

  • Tekknight

Wow, this degenerated into “The game I like is great and the game I don’t like sucks” really quickly. I wonder if there are any numbers, “How many people play X game” “How many viewers on average for X game” “Number of players online for X game” I wonder if that would be significant to anyone.

  • Pertho14

    This is pretty depressing news.

    • http://twitter.com/VAStreamMonster Marty

Why?  Street Fighter is the most spectator friendly video game.  Takes nothing to understand who is winning, just look at the life bar.

      • Garrett Jones

That’s a gross oversimplification. Having super meter while the opponent has none can lead to getting the knock down, thus the round. And having an ultra stocked can often mean a total shift in the way a match is played. Also, most people who spectate SF4 find footsies boring even though there may be great tension because the match up depends on footsies.

        • CyberShinobi

I believe what Marty is getting at is that SF4 doesn’t have nearly as much activity going on at once.  UMvC3 you have assist, moves, and super animations that can all be going on at once.  Gotta remember that they are trying to expand it to new viewers not just the people who have a great knowledge of fighters.  SF4 is the game that revitalized the FGC, why not put it forward to get more people interested?

  • BeholdMyPower

Damn, IPL got themselves a really good deal. SF4 at least is sure to bring good international representation, and we all know that game is at its best when international rivalries are brought into play. As for SFxT…hmm, not sure why it wins the draw over a few other games that deserve some limelight. Don’t think I’ll be tuning in for that game but, well, good luck to all who participate in it in the future.

      SFxT: Zombie Edition?

  • http://twitter.com/Zero_The_Shadow Tony

So when IPL throws a tournament the same weekend as ECT or Final Round, how is the community going to feel? What about when your top players don’t show up to long time established community majors because IPL was the same week and has more money? Understand that these companies don’t build their schedule around this community. There will inevitability be conflicts.

    • http://twitter.com/oBLACKSTARo oBLACKSTARo

This is what competition is all about.  MLG competed with FR and CEO and lost badly (FG-wise) with viewers and attendees.  Not to mention they had the tendancy to annouce the FGs officially being at their events with only a mere couple of weeks notice.

If IPL is smart, they will work a little closer to the community and its events and avoid all of those issues

      • http://twitter.com/Zero_The_Shadow Tony

Except MLG was running MK and KOF13 and not Street Fighter. It’s not about amount of attendance it’s about diluting the talent pool from a major tournament. Good players inevitably will go where they are the most likely to get paid. If say Final Round and IPL were the same weekend the SF players would split their ranks to get the cash. This already happens when normal FGC events happen around the same time. Only problem is Final Round wouldn’t be able to compete with the E-sports money and with Top 8 pay out at an IPL there is far more of a chance of getting payed so the players will turn out.

  • Max Cancel

If its hype and not golf clap format. I can dig it

stay free eh-sports stay free all u online warriors/stream monsterz stay free ign (IGNorant LOL AMIRITE?) im going to go jack off to memories of arcade days when ther wasnt all dis bs fuqq da sellouts like jwong and alex valle if they were real fgc player liek me they wouldve not taken the dirty esports money and stayed poor

    • StunningBiceps

Thanks for making me smile! So good :)

  • Jimmy Joe

I’m personally really looking forward to this. I started watching starcraft back in brood war when the scene was just commentators talking over korean VODs. Since IPL picked up starcraft II I think they have done a great job building the scene for that game in the US (also their LoL streams seems popular but I don’t watch that game) by hosting big events with major foreign talent attending. Listening to Magus and Mike Ross talk on stream about how IPL wants to not just have fighting games in their own e-sport events, but to promote pre-existing community events by sponsoring and by awarding winners with invitations and accommodations that sounds like exactly the kind of coexistence the FGC should want to share with e-sports.

Also who doesn’t want 2 or 3 more majors a year with top foreign players attending? Canada Cup this year was fantastic to watch and hopefully we will have the opportunity to see that caliber of play without the TOs going broke!

  • TempBast

But real talk, too bad Marvel is a pussy shit company now. If they haven’t been bought out by the time vanilla MvC3 was in production, we would have seen a way better cast (more of your favorite X-men) and Strange would have most definitely had an 8way airdash in UMvC3. I love marvel characters, but I’m begining to hate that company.
