Third Strike – Beginner’s Elena Primer by ReNiC

ReNiC is back with another Beginner’s Primer for Third Strike. This time around he tackles Elena, once again showing off her normals, specials, supers, command normals, and target combos. Elena is an interesting character, both due to her strange movement, and the fact that all of her normals are kicks. Several normals and command normals look very similar to each other and can be used to mix the opponent up.

    If her c.mp hit low (like it fucking should) and her b.hk linked into SA2 her tiering would be totally different. Great video from, Ty. He’s always been one of my favorite players.

    The more interesting question would be, why pick Elena over Chun? From an overall standpoint, both characters have the same defensive mid-range zoning playstyle. So really, other than match up familiarity (I assume more players are familiar with the Chun matchup), what else does picking Elena do for a players chances of winning?

      I can only speak for myself, but it all comes down to preference. I was able to get used to her normals and supers, I like her mobility and reach, and it just feels great to pull off wins against Ken/Yun/Urien/Chun/Akuma.

      I’d say it’s a players ability to become familiar with a character and the strategies that are just as important as the strengths of the character itself when it concerns a players chances of winning.

         Which is to say, “I just don’t feel like fucking playing Chun Li.”

        That’s what that about boils down to, there isn’t any other way to slice it.  She is a weaker Chun.  And that’s totally fine, if that’s how you wanna roll, you play the game how you see fit.  But it can’t even be argued otherwise, she’s just a shitty Chun in that game.  It sucks, that’s really sad at the end of the day, but those are the facts.

        • CptPokerface

          Yeah theres no denying it…and that’s made even more obvious to me because I can actually play Chun halfway decently, I just choose not to. I just get more enjoyment out of going with Elena. I can’t afford to go to tourney’s or anything, so what have I got to lose by maining her over Chun Li?

    • the7k

       I tried switching to Chun. She’s just boring to me.

      Elena is just more fun to play as to me. And, in the end, even if a character is weak, I’ll have a better chance with a character I find fun because I’ll actually want to put in the work with them.

      That’s why I always play Elena. If I don’t want to play, then what’s the point?

      • d3v

        Personally, if I like a game enough to want to win, then I’ll pick top tier simply because losing affects me more than with a game I could care less about.

        • the7k

           Right, but that just all depends on your personal preference.

          I mean, sure, I’d prefer Elena to be ‘competitive’, but this is fucking Third Strike, not Marvel. I’m not going to win big money playing this shit so in the end it’s for the love of the game.

          • d3v

            I still play in the arcade, and playing in the arcade means having to use the best options available so you save money by not having to put in more credits.

          • the7k

            Well, A.) Consider yourself lucky to still have an arcade with fighters less than 300 miles from where you live.

            B.) I’d still be playing characters I enjoy playing over characters who would just get me free wins. Maybe I’ll pick high tier characters I enjoy playing instead (only one I can think of being Dudley) but I’d still rather be playing Elena.

          • d3v

            @the7k
            My enjoyment of a character is dependent to how much I win with them.

          • the7k

             @d3v:disqus
            The win only lasts a couple of seconds, though. If I’m not getting enjoyment from the fight itself, I may as well be playing something else.

            I understand what you are saying, it’s just not how I feel.

       This is a bit late… but some of us win so much naturally that we
      don’t have this ‘win at all costs mentality.’ I like Elena and I’ve had
      great success with her. Would I
      have done better with Chun Li? Yep, but winning with a character you
      love is so much more fun than lowering yourself by using a character
      just because they’re strong

      • d3v

        I go be Viscant’s philosophy in that if you love a game enough that winning matters to you, then you should stack the odds in your favor. I love 3rd Strike, hence I pick Chun.
