NowGamer Talks with Seth Killian on PSAS, Evo, and the Future of Fighters

NowGamer has a really insightful interview up with Seth Killian covering a wide range of fighting game topics.  Seth first explains how he became involved with Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale and how the team’s hard-core fighting chops have influenced the design of the game.

I like [Drake's] play style. I like picking up the barrel and following it in for mayhem. I consider him the strong sort of mid-range character. I consider him kind of like, the Guile of All-Stars. Throw out the barrel, like a Sonic Boom, and you follow it in and you’ve got the low forward and you’ve got to know all the right ranges…

They go on to discuss some Evo related topics, as well as the future of fighting games in general.

[PSAS at] Evo will really be dependent on the players. If we can find the audience and the audience is there… because that’s the thing. There are great games every year that don’t make it to Evo. Whether it’s BlazBlue, which obviously everyone thinks is a great, really interesting core fighting game but sometimes doesn’t have the audience in the US or outside of Japan, that’s not able to hold up… doesn’t get to Evo. So obviously we need All-Stars to be popular in that way, to some degree. But I think in terms of gameplay, it absolutely deserves to be there. I’ll say that without question.

    …so unbiased!

You pre-defeated my answer.  Dude is a sales guy.  He’s no more likely to be straight with people about PSAS than he was with MvC3.

as much as they would like this game to be a “fighter” as to draw in more revenue and promote it, its a damn party game. Sorry PARTY GAME. Now if the development team behind this game wants to make a real fighter; then ill call it a real fighter, but until then …again its a PARTY GAME. not really hating its just a PARTY GAME. Yes i played it it was fun but its a  P A R T Y G A M E.

    • Louis Lam

“Fighter” and “party game” aren’t mutually exclusive. Nor is accessibility and depth.

      • OmegaNITRO

No, they definitely aren’t mutually exclusive, but the focuses on either are usually opposite in direction.

    • http://www.facebook.com/eric.scalgione Eric Scalgione

You played the beta only clearly. So your opinion is absolutely null. I OWN THE GAME, and it is not a party game unless you make it that way. Actually learning the game results in combos which can get you to a level 1 super instantly.

I think some people are missing the point, a lot of smash players went on to be Marvel and SSF4 players. The game may have simple controls, but IMO that’s what you need to bring new people in because most gamers out there get intimidated by classic arcade-game controls.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ashley-Byrum/100000604683967 Ashley Byrum

i just take it as the smash brothers players just finally grew up and moved on to games w/ more depth. fighters have never really been hard or difficult to learn but they are difficult to master unless your willing to put in the time. Unless your one of the few that can just play anything….. thats not me

      • Louis Lam

Melee has more depth than today’s more popular fighters, which is what most Smash players double up on.

So here’s the only detail that I think developers are doing wrong when it comes to making games accessible. When making it accessible, they end up punishing players for being skilled.

    • Josh_the_Funkdoc

This is where MK9 got it right.  It nailed the accessibility part (unique single-player stuff, easy execution), but there are more advanced aspects that reward skill (anti-air, the mid-range game, meter management).  And there isn’t much in the way of comeback mechanics, since X-Rays are rarely worth the meter in competitive play.

    • http://handsomefatman.com/ Carlos Alexandre

This is wildly wrong, in like every way. Assuming the accessibility doesn’t somehow damage execution (like SF4′s terrible DP shortcut) and powerful moves have fitting motions, there’s no damage done to skillful players.

Sadists who can only have fun when others can’t match their dexterity might get angry, but fuck ‘em.

      • gargleblax

Your post is wrong in every way. I’m not talking about preferences (my opinion is closer to yours than it is to the FGC at large) but facts.

1st sentence: JD mostly agrees with you. He supports the idea of accessible yet skillful; the only difference is he thinks devs so far have not done a good job.

2nd sentence: Overly aggressive input shortcuts lead to higher execution requirements. Powerful moves having fitting motions falls in line with accessibility, not against it. Finally, all else equal, reducing execution requirements results in decreased correlation of player skill to outcome, thus hurting skillful players.

3rd sentence: Why so belligerent? Players who have high execution prefer high execution games where they can leverage their skillset and be more successful. It’s not about haves and have-nots. I doubt you’re this bent out of shape about high strategy players preferring high strategy games.

You’re far from the most consistently wrong person on this site (not that anyone else sticks out from the crowd), but you manage to sound convincing enough that kids and people who can’t think for themselves might let you form their opinions. No hard feelings though. I almost never post, but I’m bored on Thanksgiving. I’m sorry in advance if you reply and I forget to check back.

        • http://handsomefatman.com/ Carlos Alexandre

JD’s post wasn’t exactly clear, and if I erred it was in not asking for a clarification. If he wants to clarify, by all means he should.

“Decreased correlation of player skill to outcome” is misleading at best, outright wrong at worst. “Player skill” is not some narrow term that means “execution grinder.” Skill encompasses strategy, and elements of execution beyond simply stuff like, say, 1-frame links or weird hyper-exact SvC Chaos charge super motions. So no, this isn’t necessarily hurting anyone.

Not every player with high execution prefers high execution games. Hell I’m 99.6% accurate with certain motions I don’t think should explicitly be included in fighters. And no, I’m not bent out of shape of great strategists preferring strategic games, because I see strategizing as a far more meaningful skill than muscle memory.

Another skill I don’t much care for is passive aggressiveness, nor ego where ego isn’t warranted. You might prefer it, but I question its value.

So basically, he’s saying they want to get the fighting gamers into this game… then they don’t put a 1v1 option in their online modes. That makes sense.

there is a 1v1 all you have to do is free for all invite/join the veersus match start game. OMG what you get when you tinker ge4 you talk

Sony has ALWAYS supported the FGC. They supplied a ton of consoles that Evo needs to run its 1500 man tourneys smoothly.

And of course, Seth Killian is an Evo co-founder and has done so much to promote fighting games.

If you support Sony, they will continue to support the FGC in the future. All you have to do is give this game a chance.

    • http://twitter.com/Vothsair Irving

This is true. Don’t bite the hand that feeds you, bitches. :D

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1101712987 Joshua Isaac Rogers

      Fact!

    • http://www.facebook.com/eric.scalgione Eric Scalgione

Well said. But don’t forget the FGC is filled with 30 year old children and 40 year old virgins, so the likely hood of anyone forming their own opinions or allowing themselves to like a game that isn’t a traditional fighting game is extremely unlikely.

SMH for this game already, and 99% of it is just mindless banter about supers or stage hazards. Most of us who own the game just call them fools and explain why they are wrong, only to receive back horrific insults and more fact-less banter (My experience on eventhubs discussions)

As long as mindless hate dominates the FGC, good games and great sponsors will continue to walk out the door. Personally I love fighting games, tourneys, and streams, but I hate 95% of the people I meet participating in said activities. F**K the FGC!
