Tekken Tag Tournament 2 Sells 840,000 Units in September, Soul Calibur V Breaks a Million Overall

Siliconera recently reported on the official sales numbers for Namco Bandai’s fighting game division, and their most recent fighting titles appear to be selling quite well. Tekken Tag Tournament 2 has sold over 840,000 units in September alone. The game should also get a bit of a boost from releasing as a Wii U launch title on November 18th.

In addition, Soul Calibur V and Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm Generations have both remained strong, moving over one million units each (1,380,000 and 1,010,000 respectively).

Getting my popcorn ready.. I sense Tekken hate coming

  • AriesWarlock

Good to know SC5 and TTT2 are doing so well.

  • michael bradford

im only saying this because of some jack ass last week

    doa first month 580,000

tekken tag 2 840,000 in first month

suck on it jiggle physics cant save you

    • GC001

Why do you even care about that?  Honest, just enjoy what you like!

I really hate the fanboy attitudes (and I don’t honestly think you’re expressing that sentiment in your comment, either).

I went through this crap when it was Nintendo Vs Sega Vs Sony!

Everybody, just enjoy the damn games already and don’t side up with the developers!  THAT’S a losing battle!
Half of these games I don’t even play regularly…  There’s just no time in the day for all that and there are some I enjoy more than others.  All personal preference, but it’s pointless telling other people what THEY should enjoy.

      P.S. –  DOA 1 wasn’t a half-bad game on the Saturn.  DOA 2-onward…  Well….!!!

      See my note below.

Not like it matters but… did you see that squid pre-order swimsuit? That shit is practically hentai. Not to mention that girl power trailer with female actors, like hell that’s more than what DOA does. Plus the whole swimsuits for every character for pre-ordering.

DOA is kinda late to the game and hell, they just had to chose to come out at the same time as Borderlands 2 and Halo 4 just came out so… yeah.

      • http://twitter.com/cnorw00d Robbie J

the squid suit is not pre-order……. You know damn well though that doa is one of the more hentai like fighting games behind skullgirls

      Juggle physics > jiggle physics?

Tekken Tag 2 deserves all the sales it has got.  And there are many people that still don’t believe it is good because of past tekken games.  This is just the beginning…

  • CptPokerface

TTT2 I’m not surprised is doing well, since the first one was amazing, and with all the content and how much was put into it, I’m happy to see the game is getting the recognition it deserves( wish I could just set money aside to GET it already but..college sucks.)

SC5 does surprise me though. I know for a fact many don’t like the missing staple characters or the dry story mode, but I’m glad to see a greater number can look pass all that and enjoy it for what it is.

  • http://twitter.com/emezie Emezie Okorafor

Umm…I’m pretty sure these numbers are SHIPPED TO RETAILERS, not SOLD TO CONSUMERS.

They come from this financial report here: http://www.bandainamco.co.jp/en/ir/financial/pdf_bnh/en_20121102_2.pdf

    • http://twitter.com/UseProtection UseProtection

It says Unit Sales (thousands) in that pdf.

      • http://twitter.com/emezie Emezie Okorafor

        Yes, unit sales…TO RETAILERS.

Financial reports are to investors.  Investors only care about sales to retailers, because that’s when companies make their money.  Companies don’t make money when someone buys a copy of a game from the store.

        • Jacob Bradford

a sale is a sale is a sale is a sale

          • http://twitter.com/emezie Emezie Okorafor

            No.

TTT2 has not sold 840,000 copies to consumers.  It just means there are 840,000 copies in circulation (in Japan/Europe).  If you’ve been following TTT2′s actual sales to consumers, you’d know that it hasn’t sold anywhere near that many copies to actual CONSUMERS.

There is a huge difference between selling to retailers and selling to consumers.

          • Jacob Bradford

sorry if it is SOLD it is SOLD

units sold has alwase been to retailers they cant possibly keep up with units sold to individuals

          • NORCALsubtL

you won’t ever get those numbers sold to consumers. if you have followed video games sales at all, you’d understand that.

there is no good accurate measure for actual sell through numbers. and even if there was, no one would ever tell.

          • NYC01301

You always seem to have something negative to say about anything that pertains towards Tekken. It’s really subtle though.

          • http://twitter.com/emezie Emezie Okorafor

“you won’t ever get those numbers sold to consumers. if you have followed video games sales at all, you’d understand that.

            THAT’S MY POINT.

“You always seem to have something negative to say about anything that pertains towards Tekken. It’s really subtle though.”

And, it’s not just subtle…it’s subtle AND accurate! A winning combination.

          • JasinWalraven

no, a sale to a store does not equal a copy in the hand of a consumer. And vendors often make suppliers sign a buyback agreement that if consumer sales are weak the suppliers have to buy back the left over product.

    • NYC01301

I wouldn’t say accurate, just subtle.

  • RunningWild1984

It’s Tekken, the #1 best selling fighting game franchise in the world.

Of course it’s gonna sell. No big surprise.

I am surprised though that DOA5 was doing well, but will the competitive scene be able to hold up?

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_TIC7WNRSMFBSCLF6OR6JQJAAZA sb

not any longer Street Fighter is back

      • KubikiriTurkojin

only vanilla sold lots, the rest did ass.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/ファイター-ストリート/1441869768 ファイター ストリート

You know I’ve been wondering about that…Namco has been parading Tekken as the best selling fighting game series ever – and while it’s definitely one of the top two, has it really outsold the Street Fighter series?

Not to say that sales have any effect at all on how good the games are.

  • Hazerdous

I still can’t see why SCV is hated amongst most of the FGC. Imo its the most balanced fighter we have (yes im aware that natsu is ridiculous, but she’s not unbeatable/unfair [ Lvl 3 xfactor Wesker/ Spencer's unscaled dmg to name some])

    • http://twitter.com/cnorw00d Robbie J

“Imo its the most balanced fighter we have” lmao ironic he says this on the TTT2 page

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Timothy-Ian-McMillan/100003757326579 Timothy Ian McMillan

      1.  Balance is largely irrelevant.  The most loved and popular games tend to be relatively unbalanced or broken as fuck.

      2.  SCV threw away the majority of a beloved cast in favor of clones.
      3.  It wasn’t SC2 all over again.

      • soakrates

The clones mostly just pissed off casuals. A lot of them have pretty unique play styles anyway. I think SC5′s bigger problem is that the series has been considered a “joke” for more than half a decade for various reasons. Even though the glitches in SC3 didn’t end up ruining the game the way many thought it would, they did make writing it off a whole lot easier. Then in SC4 there was the Hilde nonsense and subsequent banning of both her and Algol, thereby making the community look even more like a bunch of ban-happy whiners (which it kind of is.) Now we have Viola and her infinite to deal with and there’s been talk of banning her, last I heard. I haven’t really followed the community much these last few months, but France reportedly has banned her from tournaments.

I do wish Namco would show some more support for the game in the form of another patch to fix a few things, but it looks like we’re stuck with the game we currently have. Which, all things considered, is not such a bad thing. Just wish there was a good community to go along with it.

    • Subjective

It was a huge disappointment. For example, giving Patroklos a palette swap with Setsuka’s moveset seems like evidence the game was not completed, because that’s a downright shitty creative choice. Then include Kilik and Sophitia as random select characters #2 and #3?? Good thing it sold well so they can try again

    • http://twitter.com/Dinoz_SC Dinoz

      1. Block Button. This confuses 2D Players.

      2. Ringouts. This Confuses 2D players.

      3. Losing. When people lose at SC, they always seem to blame Balance/Engine, but never themselves.

tl:dr Soul Cal is way to New to be accepeted over 2D/3D games that have been around longer. Still easily the Best Fighting Game Period. Those who dont know, are fucked in the head.

      • http://www.facebook.com/DashingKC K.c. Cannady

Uhh Soul Calibur has been out since 1996, when it was Soul Edge actually and Soul Calibur in 1999 for the PS1 and Sega Dreamcast. It came out only 2 years after Tekken, 3 years fter Virtua Fighter and 4 years before Dead or Alive.

It’s definently not a new game and ringouts shouldn’t confuse people considering its been here since 1993 when the First Virtua Fighter came out. To me Soul Calibur started going down hill after 2.

The rostert is arguably very boring and althought its a very balanced.. theres just no idk “SpaZazz” in the game wheich makes it less appealing. I use to have quite a few characters.. all i have now is Maxi and Astroth which is very disappointing

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_IMW4FEU4ORLNXO7RPHLGXYUDUA Luke Taylor

it doesnt matter if its balanced or not
      it was BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORRRING

    • http://twitter.com/roknin Jelani-Akin

I certainly can speak for anyone else, though I don’t think the game is “hated”.

I don’t think it was a bad game at all (though obviously rushed); in fact I liked it.  My only real problem with it personally was that my main got dropped with no comparable character to inherit her style (Talim), and the other character I was interested in picking up since I played her a bit in SCIV had her style moved to a duplicate of a character I absolutely loathe (Setsuka –> Patrokolos a).
The other characters were okay, but I never really found a “home” as it were (closest I got was Pyrrha and Natsu, but meh).

  • http://twitter.com/B1jyu Stano Jaeger

Good for SCV. Now give me SCVl with the characters I care about and watch sales shoot through the roof “history unfolds and iconic souls return!” gimme my taki and sophitia, and i suppose give my brother his killik.

    • AriesWarlock

       Setsuka, too.

  • http://twitter.com/Darkforge Legion

This is a number that’s been thrown round a bit recently. and it’s apparently only europe and Japan no one knows the figures for the rest of the world yet.

        • Jacob Bradford

keep dreaming dude tekken is about to destroy sfxt and then TxSF will hit and show you capcom fanboys what a real game is about with proper balance and only the true skilled wins.

          • Masyws

Rofl so many idiocy in your posts I don’t know where to start from

          • Jacob Bradford

             nice blanket copout

          • Johnson Nguyen

You know, I don’t like Tekken, and SFxT didn’t interest me even before it was released.
But TxSF? I’ll make sure I give that a try.

  • Daniele Acerbis

In reality TTT2 sold those copies in Japan and Europe only. In the World it should have sold more than a million copies in 20 days… Now we are in november!!! Tekken always sells no matter what. It isn’t the best selling fighting game franchise for nothing!

  • WlNBACK

Awesome, more numbers that don’t mean anything!

Tekken has become such a fanboy title that the interest in how many people buy it doesn’t tell me anything about it’s quality. Swimsuit preorders, Snoop Dog stage, Wong in a rap video, “Bad Girl” trailers, clone revivals to fill-up the roster…and the game can’t even take itself seriously for one cutscene. Somewhere between T5DR and T6 this crap just got old and ridiculous. T4 was a pretty broke-ass game but the presentation wasn’t nearly this hokey and the turnout was thriving. 5.0 wasn’t perfect either but it was strong as hell.

See you all @ the Evo stream where we’ll be watching all Mishima’s in top 8.
