    SG is a legit 2d fighter. Just had some bad luck following up after release

    • Zidiane

      “is having” would be more appropriate term, I believe.

      I’ll go with my standard response:  At every point it could have done with somebody willing to say “no”.

      It’s not bad luck, and it’s not even mismanagement… because mismanagement implies management of some sort existed.

      • CptPokerface

        Jesus, do you have some kind of skullgirls vendetta? Every article is you practically trying to spell death for this game in some form.

        • http://twitter.com/windsagio windsagio

          It actually makes me kind of sad really, I was so very right about all the ways they failed, and I tried to argue the point but was shouted down at every juncture.

          Then you see all the snottiness from the designer and the blame-shifting from everyone involved, and its pretty hard to avoid reminding people.Yes this all is and was predictable, and was in fact predicted.

          • CptPokerface

            I’m afraid I don’t understand what you’re referring to..in what ways did they fail?

          • http://twitter.com/windsagio windsagio

            easy ways:
            Bad performance issues
            Tiny scene (regardless of sales, which are of course secret)
            vaporware patch, let alone DLC

            And that’s leaving out considerations of taste.

          • CptPokerface

            Well since I can’t reply to your comment.

            Those are very valid points, yes, points I’m quite sure they have already been made aware of. Remember that this game has been delayed twice in the hopes of being complete upon release, and as we all know it still wasn’t quite enough.

            It’s not so much that they failed, rather that they put in only what they though most who would be playing the game would consider the most important with the time they were given.

            As far as taste goes, if you’re referring to characters, that is, there really isn’t that much anyone can do about personal preferences. I like the characters so far but theres no denying that the game could use some more. An 8 character roster can only go so far, even when they are as intricately designed as the characters in the current roster.

          • http://twitter.com/windsagio windsagio

            My point is rather that somebody should have said ‘no’.

            That’s a producer’s job really, to decide what’s actually reasonable and important to the product and what’s not.

            For instance, their unbending insistance on 60 fps animations caused all sorts of problems and crazy jury-rigged fixes that caused other problems (looking at you hitbox animations).  Somebody they had to listen to should have said ‘this is hurting the game, it’s not practical.’

            In the same way, the tutorial, while cool, was a huge amount of effort to little return, especially given a game that was going to be 90% experienced FG players.  Somebody needed to say ‘that’s nice, but this other feature (say lobbies) is missing from the game and will have much more impact on peoples’ gameplay experience.

            It’s stuff like that.  They had this fairly arbitrary set ‘in-stone’ goals, and needed somebody to tell them what was actually important and what wasn’t.

          • CptPokerface

            I see you’re point. At the end of the day, those weren’t the best choices to make, that I can understand. They seemed to be trying to appeal to much to the “hardcore” FG players and may have alienated the core audience, the “casuals” in doing so.

            But beyond that, I can only hope they learn from how they handled things with Skullgirls release and build upon that to make it the solid 2d fighter everyone knows it can be. They’re a small team with not too many resources, and after having delayed the game twice the points you brought up were most likely missed in an effort just to get the game out while the hype was still at it’s highest.

            This system and character overhaul will hopefully be the first step to bringing those levels of hype back.

            It’s not hard to avoid reminding people, it’s hard for YOU to avoid crowing about what you think is your correctness.  You could be quiet or just not insulting, but it’s your choice to act the way you do.
            It’s hard to explain your errors, because you don’t have any knowledge about making games so you can make bland assertions without being tripped up by facts, but I’ll try…mostly so other people don’t just go believing wrong things.  For example, the hitboxes showing up has nothing to do with the animation quality, it has to do with having space for 3-6 characters at once (and is fixed in the patch, current vaporware status notwithstanding)…if we wanted to support loading everything it wouldn’t be a question of slightly lower animation quality, you’d be left with 2 attacks per character.  And I’m sure you would then say “Well, could have left it 1v1″, but at what point is it then not the game it should be anymore?You also know nothing about why the game’s in the situation it is.  If you think the design, art, cast, quality, community reception, or even sales – positive or negative opinion for ANY of those – has anything to do with the lack of support after launch, you’re mistaken.

            oh hi mike.  Actually you’re wrong, I have a lot of knowledge about making games, especially now :D

            part of that rant is from *VERY* personal experience with lack of restraint/self-indulgence.

            The streaming thing, you miss my point.  From what I can see there was *no* legitimate reason to make the characters as memory/work intensive as they ended up being.  It looks like it bit you both in memory management and in your roster cuts.

            There are games (mvc2 port, for instance) that do it just fine with 4-6 characters, so it’s demonstrably false to say its impossible.

            ~~~
            The lack of support I think has to do with your continued inability to get your act together.
            The snarkiness and utter inability to take ownership of your problemes (‘its all Konami’s fault!!! really!’) are just symptoms.
    Can’t wait for the next Salty Cupcakes! It’s really enlightening to watch a stream with the company of the people behind it. I say we are in the correct path, and watching the patched version is so much fun, playing it will be even better and playing SG is still one of the most addicting things ever. You can also practice the new IPS by implementing the changes to your combo mindset.
