NetherRealm Studios’ Hector Sanchez Discusses Injustice: Gods Among Us’ Improvements to Training Mode, Frame Data, and More

The folks over at Deadly Bison Entertainment recently had a chance to speak with NetherRealm Studios’ Hector Sanchez about their upcoming DC Universe fighter, Injustice: Gods Among Us. They discuss many of the improvements made to the Mortal Kombat engine, including the availability of true hit-trades and crossups, readily accessible frame data within the game’s menus, and an updated training mode. Sanchez also touches on Green Arrow and his playstyle, which revolves around trick arrows and hit-and-run tactics.

While many have decried the game in the past for appearing too similar to Mortal Kombat, Sanchez says they have taken all the input they’ve received from competitive tournament players and put it to work in creating Injustice, making this the next true step in their fighting game development.

I wonder if they’ll be smart enough to include that.  In this respect, the numbers that pop up in VF5′s training mode are preferable to having it on a list. …A1Job.notlong.com

Yo, frame data in the menus? I mean VF had it in training mode but you had to do the move, being able to just scroll through frame data would be great. This is assuming they fixed how frame data works in their engine…

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Gethoff-Mahfacebuk/558552166 Gethoff Mahfacebuk

My biggest concern with that is how many of the moves have that attached to it.  Consider that MK is based a lot of canned strings, do they have frame data for each individual part of the string?  Look at a character like Johnny Cage, who’s entire game revolves around the positive frames of parts of his strings.  I wonder if they’ll be smart enough to include that.  In this respect, the numbers that pop up in VF5′s training mode are preferable to having it on a list.

………..Why is using a trade means that game plays the same?

      SFXT isn’t SF4.

Damn frame data from the pause menu?!?! Thats a first ins’t it?

    • HASJ

Tekken has “frame data” from the pause menu since 5 (never played T4/Tag 1 and when I used to play T3, I just didn’t care for training mode. Silly me), I think.

As much as they state that the game is different from mortal kombat it looks exactly like mortal kombat. combos etc work just like mortal kombat they entire art direction is just like mortal kombat. Im not hating on it at all but I’d like to see a truely new art style direction w/in neverrealm studios. The DC characters even have similar special move animations that look like they where taken straight from MK. Green Arrow has a Sub Zero slide and Flash has a Johnny Cage rising attack ffs. The character size is also too small they need to be up-scaled quite a bit imo they are tiny.I also wish never realm would change up there female models in all there games in general they arnt very attractive and almost always awkward.

    • http://twitter.com/MortalKomment MortalKomment

Though I don’t disagree, I don’t think the similarities are problematic.  If anything, I feel it’s best NRS doesn’t try to reinvent the wheel each game so we don’t get any more bomb resets or input glitches.  Right now, I just want them to learn from their mistakes.

However, I feel ya on the female designs.  Wonder Women is really awkward-looking.

    • Chris Rumler

The gameplay and controls are different from MK 9, as are the combos (other than the fact that it’s still a dial-a-combo system).  Some of the animations ARE the same, though.

And the sprites DO need to be upscaled.  I’ve been saying the same thing for weeks now.

Granted, this build is at least several months old (even though it made its public debut at this event).  NRS has already been developing with a new build for a while now.  I’m eager to see what THAT looks like.

Oh, almost forgot about the fact that there’s no block button. TRUE cross-up’s, this time around!

      • http://twitter.com/MortalKomment MortalKomment

Cross-ups were just as viable in MK9 was they were in other 2D fighters.  They just functioned differently.  They were used for pressure instead mix-ups.  They were still very dangerous for both players, the opponent because cross-ups led to pressure (and pressure is far deadlier in MK9 than SF), and for the initiator because they could be blown up by a neutral jump punch + full combo.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ashley-Byrum/100000604683967 Ashley Byrum

think the character model size can be somewhat contributed to the very long and large stages so from a design standpoint i see why they are so small but i just cant look past it lol they are fricking tiny. I really dislike small character models in alot of fighters it seems like a lazy cop-out from a design stand point to me. People play fighters and chose a character to immerse themselves in that character and when the model is the size of a micro machine car then it takes away from that experience. And ya as odd as it seems the no block button is a positive step forward for Nether Realm. always been a fan of there games for the quirkiness and the ability to play them for fun or competitively; i just wish they would expand and grow and move away from some certain things and the art direction is one of them.

        • http://twitter.com/MortalKomment MortalKomment

I wouldn’t call the loss of block button a “positive” step.  Both styles have their complex intricacies.  Neither’s better or worse. Just different.

    • Rahavic

as much as you want a new art style direction NR isn’t gonna start all over from scratch on this game, we’re getting it the way the art style is right now

    • InjusticeGodsAmongUs

You are beyond gay, the game uses target combos its not an “mk9″ exclusive system have you ever played a 3d fighting game in your life faggot. Also they are using unreal engine so of course graphics will look somewhat similar but even so thats irrelevant since when does visuals and presentation dictate a game will play like another game. By the way I am 100 percent sure your faggot ass has never played mk9 at high level so I don’t know how your able to compare two games you dont understand. Not one character presented so far is an carbon clone of an mk9 character, Johnny cage and Flash do not play alike you faggot, johnny cage has a tough time getting in, and flash has a dash move that has different properties making him able to cover space fast. Johnny cage has weak far range zoning you can see flash has GP type projectile, They are not similar but you surely are a faggot.

IFyour capcom faggot who has never played mk9 at high level STFU and stop comparing it.

      • http://twitter.com/Darkforge Legion

lol you mad bro? I agree, though. The inane hate for this studio just because they had a rocky past needs to stop. Mk9 had it’s problems but it was a good new fresh start for them.

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ashley-Byrum/100000604683967 Ashley Byrum

the guy was such a hardcore bro calling someone a faggot online lol. I never said i hated Nether Realm and he just attacks me like some watchdog lol. I just want to see nether realm make some effort to change artistically if they are gonna take on other franchises. If he thinks injustice doesnt mimic MK9 hes brain dead it uses the same damn engine and many of the same damn animations it doesnt mean its going to be a bad game though. Love how some of these internet bullies like to put words into peoples mouths.

          • InjusticeGodsAmongUs

your gayer than your father aren’t you? How are they using the same engine? Back to block makes alot of teleporting character design’s from mk9 non existing for injustice. Characters in injustice all have unique jumping animations which mk9 didn’t. Also they have generic cross ups which mk9 didn’t. Pokes are looking to work different from mk9. Injustice have grapplers mk9 didn’t.  Different button layout, entirely different breaker system based on 4 bars of meter instead of 3 bars with each character having a custom special/gimmick they can perform. The stage interactions and only having 1 round. Actually frame data, and entirely buffed training mode. The only similar thing at this point is the visuals you need to stop sucking so much dick and use your brain faggot.

          “you mad bro”???

the female models are unattractive because no one at netherrealm has ever seen a woman.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ashley-Byrum/100000604683967 Ashley Byrum

lols, but they are a successful studio and money does get you pretty but usually dumb girls. The female characters just dont move very femininely they are always hunched over in a horse stance walking position instead of  upright and elegent. Im not a game developer but do Female characters usually have more frames of animation to achieve a more fluid movement?

Pretty excited for this game. I think the art direction in MK9 was razor sharp (of course minus the manly women but the look kind of fits the game’s style I think) and am totally okay with there being similarities in visual quality to Injustice.
