Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 – Storm Side Exchange Infinite

Evil Geniuses’ Justin Wong recently posted a video demonstrating a new TAC infinite for Storm in Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3. While we’ve previously seen Ororo infinites off up and down exchanges, Wong utilizes a side exchange to get the job done, fully expanding her possibilities on that front.

Shout outs to Floe’s expert camerawork.

Taking no lifing to an extreme, do people even play this game anymore? Probably one of those guys who will make combo videos long after this game is dead.

    • http://twitter.com/AlusRat Alus

These kind of comments either come from trolls or people who don’t bother to actually pay attention to majors, or even local tourneys.

Yes. It’s still THE most popular fighter there is right now.

      • http://twitter.com/emezie Emezie Okorafor

According to American tournaments and stream monsters…yes.

According to actual game sales or reality…no.

Marvel is far from the “most popular fighter”.  Especially not Ultimate MvC3, which has yet break a million sales.  Meanwhile, MK9 has sold way more than vanilla and Ultimate combined, yet people here would be quick to say how “MK is dead”.

The American tourney scene, which inherently caters to the Marvel audience through its bias, is not a good indication of what’s ACTUALLY popular in the fighting game world.

        • Rahavic

Who cares about games’ sales and entrants? Tired of those two things being criteria or something for what the “best” game is. Marvel is the most popular game besides AE and KOF in the tourney scene. The end. If you don’t know that to be fact then I don’t know how you end up on a site like this commenting on anything FGC related, seriously. Pay attention Emezie or just go back in your hole and play some SFxT.

Who gives a shit about sales?

          • http://twitter.com/emezie Emezie Okorafor

Lol, yes, who cares about actually factual, scientific data?

I didn’t say anything about “the best”.

I said most popular…as in games that the most people actually PLAY.  And yes, sales are a good indication of that, because they’re one of the few FACTUAL ways to determine how many copies of a game are actually in circulation.

As oppose to “well, no one in my area plays X, so that must mean no one plays it”.

Looking at tournaments as a gauge of popularity is stupid, when a vast majority of the fighting game population DOES NOT PLAY TOURNAMENTS.

I don’t see what is so hard to understand about that.

          • Rahavic

On any given day in any given game someone from the FGC plays more of a fighting game than a casual player who just owns a copy of the game does in an entire week.

You might as well quote me sales figures on Halo or something because that information is on the same level as hearing sales figures on MK9. Both 100% irrelevant to me.

          • http://twitter.com/emezie Emezie Okorafor

There are many degrees between “casual player” and “tourney veteran”.  All of which are a part of the fighting game community.

          • http://www.facebook.com/people/Timothy-Ian-McMillan/100003757326579 Timothy Ian McMillan

Yeah, BESIDES AE.  It’s not THE most popular fighter, as Alus had stated.

It’s not even the most popular in the US, and next to nobody plays the game outside the US.

PS: There’s still more Tekken players than Marvel.

          • http://www.facebook.com/people/Peter-A-Sewell/100000890326094 Peter A Sewell

Much respect but this is being stated in a place where the games turnout in tournament play is what dictates the games true popularity. It the last places that tournaments have been held that cater to a wide variety of players. The turnout for Marvel and AE have been much higher than most games. The brackets as well as the stream numbers have dictated this. Its purely based off the fact that the other games have held these numbers after being out for quite a while. I am hoping that the Tekken tournament community actually grows as well as other competitive 3d fighter communities. However only time will tell.

        • suproman

Actually most of MK’s sales came from a burst of casuals in mostly the U.S., with a retroactive mentality to the appeal of the game’s aesthetics, with no intention of sticking with the gameplay, I believe.  If the game was popular then, that doesn’t necessarily mean its popular now, especially since casuals pick up and return, and play the flavor of the month game. VMarvel3 sold a little more than 2million units according to vgchartz and Capcom financial reports, UMvC3 hitting up the high 600,000s, while MK’s high 2millions sales hasn’t budged since according to vgchartz and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment reports, even after the launch of the Vita (which is a fairly popular system) version, which sold less than UMvC3. So they sold about the same amount roughly. Helping prove my theory that MK cannot be milked, and its popularity was do to casuals looking for nostalgia. It also helps my case with the low tourney turnouts (unless I’m mistaken, please correct me if I am). Whereas UMvC3 is the standard for competitive play for fighting games in the U.S.

          • http://twitter.com/emezie Emezie Okorafor

I wouldn’t cite vgchartz as a credible source, if I were you.

EDIT: Also, ULTIMATE MvC3 is the current version played in tourneys. So, using sales of vanilla is rather useless, since the game is completely incompatible.

MK9 on the other hand, has been updated via patches, so the 3 million+ people who own that disc, are still capable of playing the current tourney version.

          • suproman

Yeah that’s why I listed two sources, one of each from the publishers themselves. The only thing is the Warner Bros. source was reported around early-mid this year, so I needed something more recent, and I have no idea where to find a more credible source.

          • http://twitter.com/emezie Emezie Okorafor

“t also helps my case with the low tourney turnouts (unless I’m mistaken, please correct me if I am).”

I have to wonder, if other games were treated with the same respect as Marvel on a regular basis, would interest in those games’ tourney scene’s increase?

I can’t count the number of times during a tourney weekend, when I would tune in to a stream at various times of the day…and see Marvel being streamed.  Or watch as a new game is crucified by the stream monsters, who only want to watch Marvel because it’s what they’re used to.  (Heaven forbid people experience something new and different).

It’s like a self fulfilling prophesy.

The entire system is set up to put Marvel on a pedestal…and, lo and behold, people put Marvel on a pedistal.  Gee, what a surprise that other games don’t get as many entrants, even if more people actually play them.  It’s not a very welcoming environment.

          • suproman

Just out of general curiosity (not trying to form an argument between MK and UMvC3) do you know if more people play MK or anything more than UMvC3? Is there even a way to compare or gauge that sort of thing?

As for the self fulfilling prophesy, life is not fair you can either deal with that or be stuck between realizing it. I am a Mega Man (don’t run I hate the so called Mega Man fandom/sometimes-fanboys as a whole, I stand alone) as well as Breath of Fire fan  you don’t know how many times Capcom has said we can’t develop or release titles under these brands due to competition. Capcom lost faith in these franchises due to franchise Pokemon, Mario, Final Fantasy over shadow them. Point is, if stream monster and viewers want to see a game over another in abundance, I don’t think anything can be don about that, unless people take it upon themselves to formulate a community that appreciates these variety of games. If the its the later, than good luck to those people.

        • Garrett Jones

”According to American tournaments and stream monsters…yes.” HO, wait, stop right there. Now look at where you are. A website in the US dedicated to fighting games relevant to the tourney scene. Now then, shut the fuck up.

          • http://twitter.com/emezie Emezie Okorafor

There’s more to the fighting game community than American tournaments.  Even in America.

          • http://www.facebook.com/people/Timothy-Ian-McMillan/100003757326579 Timothy Ian McMillan

Typical American attitude, thinking their country is the only one that matters.

  • http://twitter.com/DevilJin01 Devil Jin

People only care about tournament entrants and stream views.  The sales don’t matter because those other guys that bought MK aren’t even playing the game anymore.  It’s all about who is actively playing the game competitively and UMVC3 has more people doing that than MK9 pretty easy I would say.

Any ways Storm is back in the game with this so I”m happy.  She sorely needed something like this to boost her back up after her getting shit for buffs.  Now she is scary in the 2nd spot again.

    • http://twitter.com/emezie Emezie Okorafor

“People only care about tournament entrants and stream views.”

Wow, so it officially happened?  ”Stream views” are now officially held in the same esteem as ACTUALLY PLAYING THE GAMES, now.

      Damn.

      Dark times ahead.

    • PointCtrPoint

Sales matter in the sense that a game with higher sales is more likely to get a new update or sequel down the line.

The only way stream views and tournament would factor into a sequel being created is if the game publisher was actively monetizing viewers and entrants on their end.  While it can be said that tournament entrants and stream views lead to sales, it is difficult for a publisher to draw a direct line from tournament/stream to purchase.

Given all that, it’s pretty ironic that most stream viewers will do everything they can to not be monetized.

  • spectaa

I don’t care about stream views and tournaments entrants, and you shouldn’t either unless you actually go to tournaments. It makes me laugh when random stream monsters talk about the number of viewers their game get.

There are many statement that have been posted that are true they just dont stack up to what the scene is totally about. The information, numbers, tournament numbers, or whatever you want can be compared, noted, stated, and thrown all over. However its not about the companies its about the scenes and how much support they are really getting. If you have time to bitch about this then you have time to support the growth of your respective scene and try to get more people playing the games and going out to tournaments.

We are actually a part of a monster that has its popularity based off how many people are out there showing support for the games that they play. I have seen may games die and lead to games being made that are considered sad replacements. I will go as far as to say that the best game to show a outstanding upgrade to its predecessor as of lately is TTT2. However, if the players are not all around showing that support and that love for the game then how will others know? Numbers alone mean nothing to heavy players of the games in general. Its about the community.
