Microsoft Announces Renewal of Killer Instinct Trademark

While trademark filings are usually revealed by eagle-eyed outsiders, Microsoft announced this morning that they have renewed the Killer Instinct trademark on Play XBLA. The quick announcement doesn’t explicitly state that they are working on anything at the moment, but the fact that they took it upon themselves to come forward with this information is interesting.

So, what do you think? HD remake? The ever-elusive Killer Instinct 3? A Kinect port? Absolutely nothing? Let us know in the comments what you think might come of this. We’ll be sure to keep you updated if more details become available.

    My money is on a re-release/HD remake of KI or KI2.  They might be able to swing the arcade version of KI2 since KI Gold was the only one on N64.  I’m not sure that Microsoft is big on fighting games especially with the current market cannibalizing each other, but KI is really good IP and they would be dumb not to use it.

      All the top strats and top chars are fed to us.  At this point it would be up to us to use them, experiment, find counters, and evolve play, but too many people are stuck complaining because they didn’t learn the good stuff and never got a chance to innovate.

    Anyway if this is true i hope is just KI1 and 2 for XBLA, with the actual situation on Rare and his “Kinect” games i just waiting for the worse here.

      Just to be clear, this is not a rumor. The renewal of the trademark was announced by Microsoft. Likewise, Microsoft has ownership over all original Rare IPs as reflected by their Banjo-Kazooie sequel. Just the same, they have Killer Instinct and Jet Force Gemini in their stable as well.

        Actually Microsoft did ruin pretty much ruin Rare. They stopped them from making games like KI, Golden Eye and mutha fuckin Battletoads when in 2002 and Microsoft payed $330 million for 100% of the company. Microsoft calls the shots for the company now and they don’t get to create what they truly want anymore, they make pet tiger games and kinect sports BS. 

        I do agree the side picking isn’t needed but when you get bothered enough by people sometimes it’s time to take a jab back. The “fence” may be stupid but the people on the xbox side didn’t start yacking all the time about the exclusive greatness of Playstation All Stars I assure you of that.

        And yes the game looks like it sucks for anything other than a get drunk and party brawler.

            Well I’m sorry if you think that Rare had a shot at making Kinect Sports a great game because they didn’t, or Kinectimals, or the rest of the Kinect BS that Microsoft tells them they have to make. KI, KI2, Battletoads, Goldeneye, and many more were all top notch best games to be had at the moment type of shit. 

            Sorry for you, you hate Killer Instincts so much. They were way better than the Mortal Combats of the day, better than Clay Fighters, better than Primal Rage. In fact all newer fighting games probably owe much of their combo system ideas to Killer Instinct.
            And yes. To me, from the beta footage I’ve watched PSASBR(as you refer to it) looks like a joke and not a very fun one at that.

            They did throttle their creativity as a developer though. After being sold to Microsoft, they were repeatedly forced by them to scrap whatever new, interesting projects they would come up with in favor of games that would focus solely on the “E for Everyone” market. And then, wouldn’t you know it, they went from having a mix of critically acclaimed releases and some “meh” ones, to having pretty much only the latter.

            Having your creativity stifled in favor of churning out whatever the company that owns you wants is the prime reason so many individual developers leave either their company or their franchises behind, despite the relative financial security. It is a legitimate point, especially considering that much of Rare’s original talent left in response, such that there’s not a lot of hope for them to ever be anything like their former selves. :/

    Killer Instinct is cool and all, lots of great memories, but then I go back and play it on Mame and I’m like… man this game did not age well. From a gameplay stand point anyways. Looks amazing, love the presentation, the music, and some of the characters, but Jesus… what a trainwreck this game was.

    right now i am closing my eyes and imagining that all of the following statements are true:

    - This will be a new exclusive title for xbox, KI3.  they’ve been secretly developing even before the trademark renewal, and it will be released tomorrow, 9/18

    - Every character (including Eyedol & Gargos) from KI1 + KI2 will make it in, along with 3 new original characters.  In addition to that, there will be 4 characters from the Xbox family: Master Chief, Dom from Gears, Alan Wake and a tiger from Kinectimals.

    - Bill Gates personally requested this renewal (it’s well known that he’s been obsessed with combos since the 90′s).  He also asked the developers to make Riptor top tier (with unblockable normals), but they explained to him the importance of balance so he changed his mind.

    - there will be tons of free DLC day 1, including a nude alt for every character

    - fully maxed out Ultra combos will reach upwards of 800 hits, and can take 3 – 4 minutes if done properly

    - each of the 3 new original characters will be extreme stereotypes

    Renewal?  So, that would mean they’ve already had it.  Announcing this now can really only mean they’re going to do something with it.

    My best guess is HD ports (or remakes) of KI1&2 to gauge interest, and then if they’re successful then MAYBE we get KI3.

    Also knowing how Microsoft loves pushing marketing gimmicks without really having any idea how it would work in practice, there will probably be something with Kinect in there.  Just because you can’t spell Kinect without KI.

    I’m calling it right now, Killer Instinct 3 will be a launch title for the Xbox 4/ 720. People complaining about market over-saturation hold on, we have this, a new Jojos and Girl Fight coming out plus a new Darkstalkers at some point. This mirrors the FG crash in the 90s except today each fighting game is actually very good. I hope the market doesn’t get hurt when developers realize that just because a game is good doesn’t mean it will sell ( KOF13, SC5 and others). That and the FG has a ton of growing left to do and we seemed to have plateaued.

    i’m hoping it’s just a re-release and not an hd remake or part 3. ki gold and ki2 were ass and i think ki1 was just a lot of luck that it turned out to be so fun. hella broken but fun.

    I am curious did KI ever have a scene in the FGC?  I loved the look and feel of the game when I was a kid but I didn’t follow the FGC until recently after the SF4 resurgence happen so idk if KI was a game that people played in tournament.

    I wasn’t a big fan of KI, and was even less of a fan when the dial-a-combo idea bled into Mortal Kombat 3. ( out of all the fighting games with juggle combos MK2 had the best and it made the most sense)

    1. You won’t play the game anyway since it isn’t MvC3/SF4/Tekken
    2. Even if you did play, you’d whine because you can’t just hit confirm into your longass combos you spent weeks practicing on due to combo breakers. 

    Microsoft would be better off just making Guitar Hero but with martial artist instead of guitars, it would be real fitting with the shit fighting games out today, and you can spend all day memorizing your cute little combos and never have to worry about adapting!

    I am thinking this will be for the next gen Xbox.  There are not a whole lot of exclusives on the current console but they can pretty much survive with what they have now.  A launch title for the 720 would be pretty good for them.

    Just imagine, in the future, they announce KI3.
    It sells well, plays like a good fighter, is considered a success.

    A year later, a CG video is released. Cinder and Glacius are battling it out in a wasteland, when the earth starts to shake and shatter open. Two figures burst out of the hole into the air and slam to the ground, enveloped in the dust cloud produced from the quake. The cloud slowly settles, and just before the figures are recognisable, one of them quickly springs into action, pushing their palm outward, and a yell resonates the air.

    A chain fires from the figures palm inbetween Glacius and Cinder, “catching” the camera and leaving the screen pitch black. Battle sounds are heard in the background as the words many of us have waited for blaze across the screen…
