The 2nd TOPANGA League (A) has begun. As previously stated, the tournament will again be for Capcom’s Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition Ver.2012 and will feature the top players from the 1st TOPANGA League as well as several players rising from B League.

The prize money for the 2nd A League is significantly higher than the previous league.

1st Place – 1,000,000 yen (~12690 USD)

4th Place – 50,000 yen (~630 USD)
5th Place – 30,000 yen (~380 USD)
6th Place – 10,000 yen (~130 USD)

For reference, sako won 555,555 yen as champion of the 1st A League.

In addition, the winner of 2nd TOPANGA League (A) will be given a seed to the Street Fighter 25th Anniversary Official National Tournament: Kakutou Aki Matsuri, earning a place in the SSFIV AE finals tournament.

Rules & Format

While the 2nd TOPANGA League (A) retains the same basic format of the 1st League, with an online segment followed by an offline segment, there are some slight changes.

Provisional Ranking Round-Robin League (Online Play)

The online portion is mostly the same as before: a round-robin league with all players participating, for a total of 66 first-to-3 game matches. Based on the results of the online league, players are given a provisional ranking. Ranking is determined by overall match win-loss record, with game win-loss difference record used as a tie-breaker. If a tie still remains, the player who won the match between the two contestants will claim the higher rank. Unlike the 1st League however, at the end of this segment, 11th place and 12th place automatically drop in rank and do not participate in the offline competition at all.

Final Ranking Competition (Offline Play)

The offline portion is expanded, giving the higher-ranked players more matches to play. The offline competition is broken into two leagues, starting with a lower league of 6, consisting of the provisional 5th-10th place players. The top two finishers from this league advance to the upper league, also consisting of the provisional 1st-4th place players, for an upper league of 6. Each league is a round-robin of 15 matches for a total of 30 matches, significantly higher than the 11 matches of the 1st league’s offline segment.

The match format itself is slightly different as well. Instead of 2/3 sets of FT6, matches are now a single FT10 set, but retaining the deuce rule from before. In the case of a 9-9 set point tie, the set enters into deuce, and one player must obtain at least a 2-win advantage to claim the set. The player with the higher provisional ranking is already given a 1-win advantage.

Stream Information

As with the previous TOPANGA LEAGUE competitions, the 2nd A League will be streamed on Nico Nico Live and will be pay-per-view to watch the entire stream. Individual day tickets can be purchased for 500 Nico Nico points (1-to-1 to yen, ~6.35 USD), 400 points (~5.10 USD) if purchased in advance; or a complete 12-day package can be purchased for 3500 points (~44.40 USD), 3200 points (~40.60 USD) if purchased in advance. Be aware that you cannot buy the full package after purchasing an individual ticket.

Though viewers must pay in order to watch the full stream, the first part of each day’s stream (typically ~45-60 minutes) may be watched free-of-charge.

  Ye, he’s reliving his legend right now. So far only lost to Bonchan, but that could be expected as Bonchan was also very close to winning that special Daigo challenge a few months ago. They have a very weird matchup going on, know eachother very well

It’s funny how there is no Cammy, Adon, Seth or Akuma doing well. It just goes to show that if you’re as good as these Japanese players are, character choice means jack shit.

  no it doesnt, didnt you see how umeharas ryu got raped again by mochis dhalsim?characters do matter, especially when you may only use 1 character, match up becomes everything. mochi will easily win this tourney if there are no divekick characters present in the later stage of this battle. so i hope kazunoko rapes him good, same for sako. i hate seeing guiles, dhalsims or rogs, same for yuris and some other characters who excel at zoning and turtling (and have great normals and aa’s). .

    You do know when people say jack shit, it’s usually an exaggeration. Of course characters choice matters when you are actually playing the matchup, but when you are ‘as good as these Japanese players are’, then it has no effect on the outcome..
    
    That’s like saying, “online PP/BP means jack shit”. Of course it means something, but shouldn’t be used to determine the opponent’s skill level.

      it has a big effect on the outcome, especially when the match up difference is as big as sim vs ryu for instance. yhc mochi is nowhere near daigos level, but in a first to 10 ill bet 100 dollars againt you daigo wont even win 4 games. thats how big the difference is.
      
      on the other hand, most match ups in sf4 are now in a pretty well ballanced state, but that doesnt mean all match ups are ballanced, not even close to it.

        Daigo has played Yhc-Mochi twice in the past FT10 and both times the score was 10-8 Mochi. Sim isn’t that bad of a match-up for Ryu.
        
        Would have been interesting to see how the match-up went this time but Mochi didn’t make it that far.

  Seth is overrated and Kazunoko dropping him (plus Poongko struggling in recent majors) proves that. There are very few good Adon players other than Gamerbee. Japan has long hated Viper and treat Viper players like how Phoenix players are treated in MvC3. Akuma is borderline overrated too and the Akuma players in Japan have been napping for a long time. Only Cammy should be better represented, and I do believe she will make her prescene felt very soon.

    As an Akuma main I don’t think he’s overrated. I think he’s definitely one of the strongest characters in the game.
    
    With that being said any/all of the top tiers in AE are overrated. This game is so matchup dependent there are really no S tier characters that just rape everyone. Akuma is good because he has even to favorable matchups across the board and has the tools to deal with almost any character. I also think Seth is a great character. Kazunoko still did pretty well with him last league and after only minimal exposure to the character. I just think he felt more comfortable with Yun after using him so long in AE. If he had stuck with Seth I’m sure he’d be doing very well.
    
    I definitely agree with you on Cammy. I really don’t know what other players rep her in Japan though (besides Kindevu and Banbaban).

        You misunderstand. I’m saying that I think if Kazunoko had stuck with Seth he would likely still be doing just as well as he is now.
        
        Kazunoko is an great player and he did quite a bit with Seth despite his limited exposure to the character (GF LG cup in Japan and 4th in Topanga League).
        
        This is all just speculation of course, but I think Kazunoko dropping Seth didn’t prove that he’s overrated. It likely just proved that Kazunoko preferred playing with his more comfortable character in Yun.
        
        I also think that saying Poongko has been “struggling” is a bit of an exaggeration. He still made top 8 at Evo this year (and got knocked out by his least favorite character matchup). Poongko also won LG cup.

  Just because those characters aren’t in the top at the moment, doesn’t mean that the rest of them aren’t characters with strong options.
  The day we see characters like Rose and Chun Li up there, I’d be willing to agree with you. But right now there are still a bunch of characters who we barely ever see, because they just can’t win in the long run.

    Of course they are characters with strong options, and they certainly are the best characters, no-one is going to deny that. However, like I said these Japanese players are the best of the best, and they stick by their main characters. If Rose or Chun Li were one of their mains, maybe it would be different. Yes those characters have less options, but that still does not determine anything and is down to the players themselves.

and he used to be a strictly vf player just 3 years go, dayum. but imo hes VERY VERY lucky. the jpn players dont use characters fei is weak against, like the turtle whores rog and guile for instance. and i know ive seen at least 2 killer rogs and 2 killer guiles,with 1 of each character being represented by a truly strong highest level player (ace eirin > dieminion imo).
