AT&T’s U-verse Sports Takes a Look at EVO 2012

In order to offer a preview of their U-verse Sports service, AT&T recently posted an interesting video that covers EVO 2012. They talked to a variety of notable faces in the community at the event, including Ricky Ortiz, Ultra David, Seth Killian, and John Choi, to get a sense of how EVO started what makes it so important to the scene. They also spend some time with a few of the players as they progress through their matches. While everyone has provided some form of coverage for the event between July and now, this segment provides a great look at how EVO and other competitive gaming communities may be covered by mainstream media in the future.

    I wish they would have at least mentioned the other games which were there. Seeing “Dacidbro: Street Fighter Player” kind of threw me for a loop. Still, good to coverage.

    Only about half of the game video footage was synced to the audio lol.

    I keep ragging on this, but no joke I watched the whole thing and liked it a lot.  Props to U-Verse.  If they show more “not-quite-sports” up close and personal like this I’d actually be inclined to follow up on this show/channel.  Not saying I don’t enjoy football or what-have-you but for example I’ve heard just as amazing stories from poker players (which I don’t even play or follow) as I’ve heard from fighting game tournaments, and I’d love to hear more like this.

    Definitely great to see the mainstream press offering coverage, though yes, I have to agree some things were taken out of context. This was definitely one of the better video features where the scene actually is represented as individuals with talent, personality and ambitions.

    Best coverage of EVO made thus far. It was really well cut together. Whether some minor things were out of context is besides the point. This segment would easily catch peoples attention that otherwise wouldn’t give it the time of day. Been showing the vid around all day.

    This was really well done and definitely does a good job at showing the spirit of Evo and the FGC.

    My only real complain is that they focused only on Street Fighter and took a lot of comments out of context as if it applied only to Street Fighter, when in reality a lot of it applied to Marvel, KoF, and more. So now SF4 just got even more publicity from the success of smaller profile games. I mean come on, they made it sound like the 4000+ people there all went there and trained only for SF4, when it was actually only about 2000 or so.

    Anyway, still a very good coverage. So props to U-Verse for this.

    For those of you interested in watching it on tv, I just checked and they are airing this ep in about 2 hours. Here in LA its channel 600 if you have uverse and it airs today from 12 to 1230pm.

      Another strike at mainstream media simplifying their video game coverage to accommodate the unfamiliar crowd. If it was expanded to detail the multiple games, the results for different types of viewers watching would have been greatly successful. This feature was a piece of shit.

           Mexico crowd and horse head were thrown in among the random crowd shots, but all of the interviews (except Dacidbro? LOL) centered around SF4 players.  Crowd reactions on a personal level all were focused on SF4 as well.

          Besides, do you KoF fans really want to include footage of a bunch of unruly latinos screaming “ASSHOLE! ASSHOLE!” in Spanish at everyone not named Bala?  Is that the kind of press you want?  Shit was so hype, right?

            Well they have the power of editing to not include the more raunchy footage specifically. All in all, they should have covered more of the event, not just KOF but all of the featured games and even what was happening in the other side, to give the viewers how big the event really was. This feature was a failure.

            Stream Views have nothing to do with this. It is short sighted to be annoyed because you just happly ignore the fact that if you’re presenting this event to an unsuspecting audience(aka NOT STREAM VIEWERS AND THE LIKE) you aim to use the most recognizable to the mainstream public. In this case? It’s Street Fighter, don’t bother to try and argue that. This special focused on Street Fighter because it is the game/series the average viewer might be able to recognize and relate to. This was a 20 minute coverage so they focused simply on 1 game to not overwhelm the audience. Honestly rather than looking for ways to be annoying take a minute to consider who made this piece, and why, and for whom. 

            So once again, any footage shown of crowds during other games(or GASP footage of players playing other games) was shown to express what Evo is and how great it is. So once again, get over yourselves.

      Street Fighter is more name brand in the USA. They probably didn’t want people being like ” WTF is KOF” even though KOF would have gotten some much needed coverage and would have helped their scene grow. Its like how if you asked any average American what an MMORPG is, they would say ” Uh…Like Warcraft” even though there are hundreds out there.

    Loading the video on devices other than a desktop has lead to some mixed results. Last night, I tried running it on a Droid (after Flash 11 was installed) and it still wouldn’t load. On a laptop though, you shouldn’t need to download any codecs.

    Seriously, they made it look like SF4 was the only game there. They completely ignored the other five games. You can’t get a *single game* into Caesar’s Palace, not even Halo or CoD.
