Toshimichi Mori on BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma’s Arcade Release and Story Details

In an interview with Famitsu, Arc System Work’s Toshimichi Mori talked about the upcoming BlazBlue sequel, BlazBlue Chrono Phantasma. First up, Mori assured fans that the new game will be hitting arcades before the end of the 2012 calendar year. As proof of their commitment to this, Mori brought up the fact that they held location tests for the game immediately after its announcement. Mori also mentioned that they will be holding a second location test soon, before showing a near final build of the game at the Tokyo Game Show in September.

As for the games story, Mori confirmed that the game takes place after BBCS Extend. He also mentioned that, for the home version (currently confirmed only for the PlayStation 3), instead of having individual story paths for each character, they will simply have 3 main stories that lead up to the games true ending.

They did say this was going to be the final Blazblue. They wanted it to be a trilogy. It certainly wont be the last version of this game though -_-

  Its already confirmed this game is not the final story. They are finishing up some sub plots on this game like the 6 hero and stuff. I also just wanted to say that of the 3 new characters only 2 of them is there for the story. The third character amane is there just for fanservice since it was the voice actor of ragna that mentioned or requested it.
  
  The next sequal is likely the final chapter in the trilogy.

  Whoa really? The issue I have always had with BB is the length of combos needed to generate any sort of substantial damage. I didn’t find most combos to be particularly difficult, but they get to be so long/repetitive and make the game boring to me. Also the damage scaling off of light attacks can be really harsh. Of course, this is just my opinion as a non BB player and I understand other people feel differently.

  True sequel, they put 3 more characters with a couple unannounced ones that he says in the interview, they changed the mechanics completely, making the game play completely different as well, like they removed the guard primers, removed offensive bursts and put the overdrive system which functions like an install for every character that you can activate by sacrificing the defensive burst that after depletion it regenerates as the match goes along, they also changed the meter bar so that certain moves use 25% meter for a guard crush than can be avoided with barrier guard, etc.
  Now for more casual players, its got a completely new story mode continuing the story after CS, and all other stuff that will appear in the console release

Three stories instead of unique individual modes sounds bleh. I’m reminded of Soul Calibur V’s horrible story mode full of sister and the malfested. The last thing I want to do is play a story full of Noel, Ragna and Jin with no one else in sight.

The changes towards shorter combos sounds promising though.

  Actually the story mode will work like this, 3 major scenarios that will intersect and reveal the true ending like its said in the article and you’ll be able to switch between the various characters during each scenario
