Arc System Works Announces BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma; Includes Three New Characters and Updated Moves; Trailer Released

Details regarding a brand new installment of Arc System Works’ BlazBlue franchise recently hit Twitter courtesy of jinjya3, who is currently attending BlueFes 2012, a yearly event that has seen huge announcements like this before. The title, dubbed BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma, will supposedly feature three new characters, updated costumes for the other fighters, and a variety of tweaks and additions to the existing movesets. While it’s unclear at the moment if this is an entirely new game, the plethora of changes would lead one to assume it is.

Arc System Works designer Toshimichi Mori confirmed the title on Twitter. This is certainly an interesting turn of events with the recent console release of Persona 4 Arena in Japan. The game currently has a winter 2012 arcade release window. In addition, there will be a location test at Akihabara Hey in Tokyo on August 6. Below you can catch the trailer shown at BlueFes, courtesy of Famitsu.

MMCafe’s Professor has provided clearer translations of jinjya3′s details. We’ve included them below, along with an image portraying the emblems of the three new characters. Location testing for the title will begin on Monday in Japan at Akihabara Hey.

The new release will be titled Blazblue Chrono Phantasma.

There’s reportedly a lot that’s been changed in the game. The neutral poses have been redrawn for all the characters, and their costumes are even different. Of course they also have new moves.

Noel has a different weapon and she doesn’t wear a cap this time.

Tsubaki seems to be the version that’s fallen to the dark side.

Hazama has a new DD

The BGMs seems to be different as well

Three new characters will be added in: Amane, Barret(Bullet?), Azrael. Amane fights with something like a cloth, Barret looks a bit like Makoto, Azrael is muscular.

Im definitely thinking about giving this update a chance however but im still wondering if an updated version will just be around the corner. On top of that since i play online quite a bit im not a fan of playing nothing but ragnas online.

        You do realize this sin’t an update, but a new game right? The third one in the series. That’s why it has a new name, new settings, new character designs, new gameplay elements (and some taken out). ChronoPhantasma is not Continuum Shift III or Extend+ or whatever. It’s the next sequel in the franchise.

        I remember paying 50 for Calamity Trigger… Limited edition. It was 40 for the game new. Blazblue never really got the full 60 dollar price tag.

        As far as bad business tactics go, it seems to me that Arc Systems got more of my money, and I didn’t even get as much content.
        
        Also, I don’t know what this Capcom every 3 month DLC you speak of is. The only time Capcom charged us for anything regarding SF4 gameplaywise was for the new SSF4 disc and the AE update.

  Arc System Works is responsible for BB and GG. Atlus has no hand in either GG or BB. P4A is a project owned by Atlus, but largely handled by ArcSys. Before any more confusion is created, Aksys is ArcSys’ localization company that brings their games to the English speaking market. In other words, ArcSys and Atlus have to be splitting profits for their joint project, while BB’s revenue will be solely theirs.

    Really sounds like you know nothing about the game, considering how many changes there’ve been to the UI and suchlike (Guard primers missing, different burst functionality, all heat gauges split into quarters which implies the whole cast can do something with 25% heat, etc.) It’s pretty clear that even if they didn’t redraw every sprite in the game (which frankly would’ve been a waste of time) that they’re giving this game a serious overhaul.     Continuum Shift II Extend is the last update for Continuum Shift, it builds on top of CSII’s updates of adding chapters for the DLC characters by adding one more character and updating Calamity Trigger’s story to give those characters more screentime to explain what they were doing during that time.

        Continuum Shift is a sequel because it expands on both the roster, gameplay and it picks off from what happened previously in the story. Hazama, Tsubaki and Mu, and if you count Lambda, that’s four newcomers. II and Extend are updates since they still keep the title Continuum Shift and simply add more content on top of the original version of the game, both characters and adding scenes to the story to help flesh it out. Here, we’ve got a whole new sequel that adds three more characters and drastically changes some old ones as well with the removal of 2-3 others.

        BBCP takes place in Ikaruga instead of Kagutsuchi; the only stage that
        is returning is Rachel’s since it exists in a pocket dimension. Every
        stage is new except for that one. There are three completely new
        characters. Completely as in they haven’t even appeared in the storyline
        at all thus far, whereas nearly all the expanded characters of CS have
        appeared in the storyline since CT. The hud looks completely different
        (and fucking awesome, I must say) as opposed to the recolors of CS
        revisions, and all the character art has been redone.
        
        This is a sequel, not an update. It’s the progression of story and setting that BlazBlue fans have been wanting since Continuum Shift, which was a sequel to Calamity Trigger. Shit, while we’re at it, how about we notice that way more things are different between Chronophantasm and Continuum Shift than there were between Continuum Shift and Calamity Trigger.

        I have. The events of Calamity Trigger take place in the Cauldron, prior to Hazama/Terumi’s ascendancy and creation of Kusanagi AKA Mu-12. In the True Ending of Calamity Trigger, Ragna undergoes deja vu where he’s being dragged into the Cauldron with Nu-13 – except this time around Noel saves him and succeeds (whereas the first time around Jin tried and failed – fell in and became Hakumen).
        
        Continuum Shift continues from that point in that Hazama enters the fray, and most of the pawns that had no reason to get involved now do – NOL’s Makoto, Six Heroes’ Valkenhayn and Trinity Glassfield via Platinum. In the true ending of Continuum Shift, Ragna frees Noel from the control of her Murakumo unit, breaking Hazama’s lifelink (although he gets a new one shortly after once he awakens the REAL Saya).
        
        Chrono Phantasm takes place after Saya essentially kills every possible variation of the Continuum Shift that WASN’T used and now makes it where the Shifts that Taka-Magahara were using to reset time and revive all involved are now gone – basically, in this phase, once you die that’s it. No more revives courtesy of Taka-Magahara.

Still, I’d be okay with DLC so long as they price their DLC better, bundle their characters with story modes and even offer character DLC packs for lower prices. I’m not usually hyped for BB, but I did play a fair amount of it and I loved its story. If this is a true sequel, its a first day buy for me (Bullet and Azrael are first day mains). Since I will be focusing my ass off on P4U, I will be learning a decent amount on how to play Arcsys Fighting Games.

The sprites are being redrawn and updated, the system is going threw changes, the huge story mode is continuing from CS, New characters are added, New moves are given to many or all characters, new music tracks, completely new stages because the story calls for it, and the change to the character combos and such is way more extensive then any sf revision and sequel.

And how arc is just like capcom. BBCP however is not getting as much crap as the previous instalments.

        I have no problems paying for new updates, but it’s just a little ridiculous how much they charge in comparison to what new content you actually get. Factor in the rate they come out and it’s just a bit much, even for me.

    When I wanted to see the changes they made to Jin when CS came out, I went on Dustloop, went into the same Jin character thread as I did for CT and clicked on “Jin changes from CT to CS”
    
    It’s just one generic forum for BB, you don’t see seperate BBCT, BBCS, BBCSEX threads because they’re updating one game.
    
    When I want to improve my 3S Ryu game, I don’t go into the SF4 Ryu thread, because that’s a completely different game.

        Ever think that maybe SF is the most popular fighting franchise and thers alot of old farts with the meny and influence in the FGC that loves what they grew up with? Marvels big too but you dont see too many tourneys with marvel 1 marvel 2 and marvel 3. Also its alot easier to memorize SF combos then most games because thier combos and moves haven’t changed that much since forever.

Anyway glad i didn’t follow the Extend Scam (although its pretty much guaranteed they will probably do “Chrono Phantasma II or another Extend for this game) but at least the game looks different now to an extend and is last chapter of BB series. Only noticed Noel looking drastically different at first glance (she does looks better with the long hair and no beret though)BB series is still least arc sys favorite (mostly because i can’t stand the aesthetics and characters) compared to GG and P4U, but glad this 3rd game is taking more elements from those games like there burst for example.

      With the new info it looks like BB still only have 1 burst. You can use the burst or use it as your overdrive.

all i can say is that i like the fact that there are this many people passionate about fighting games in the community, but everything else………lighten up guys……..also why click on the article of a game that you don’t like, actually i’ll say series since one game can be bad while another can be good, or decent, or however you wish to put it, its happened before………..and besides as of late i’ve yet to run into a fighting game that’s so broken that it can’t be fun at least casually, like just trying it out cause it happen to be there, if you like it you like it, if you don’t you don’t………….maybe it need to become a top tier player to see if my mindset changes………also making every character tournament viable would help, i know its hard, just sayin is all

I bought the 1st Blaz Blue loved the game very happy with what they made, I ended up winning a copy of CS but never got into it and since then I think this is the 4th Blaz Blue game? I love Arc System but I’ll be waiting for Guilty Gear hope they decide to make another Hard Corps Uprising as well but I don’t see myself going back to BB anytime soon for those that do enjoy!

People arguing over it not being a sequel or no need to remember Capcom is the only company that does a total overhaul (gameplay, graphics, etc.) when it comes to sequels. Even SNK doesn’t change as much between new KoF installments.

  94/95 to 96/98 was a huge change, bigger than most changes ever in a sf title. 99 to xi changed every installment. from 94/95 it was graphics and gamaplay. 99 to xi was mostly gameplay. 12 was so different it wasnt even a kof. 13 along wiht 12 are completely new graphic wise.
  
  look at the other franchises how much they changed, SS, FF, AOF.
  
  personally i prefer SS and FF over sf or kof any day of the week. problem is SS never got the status it had with 2, the later games were not as much as an improvement as 2 was over 1.
  
  FF is a greta series, it really changed drastically that they could have made a new game out of it instead of calling it ff. 1 and 2 were really bad, special was the first great one. 3 is decent, rb and rbs are great, rb2 close to perfection (why no guard break? faster hops? tick throws? why oh why snk) and motw is great but i preffered the rb style over it.

So much love for GG and P4A yet so much hate for BB. I never really understood the hate for this franchise. True the characters are bland, but I actually enjoy the fighting mechanics. I for one am thrilled to be getting a new BB. That being said I am sad no Kokonoe or especially no Murakumo Units (Nu or Lambda). Since they were my mains in previous installments. Well more incentive for me to check out the new characters I guess.

seeing how sf4 didn’t change shit system wise from revision to revision, this actually has me excited to try BB again. all other sf games had system revisions and not just character balance nerfs except for the sf4 series. there’s a lot capcom should have changed and experimented with but they didn’t. this new BB has a lot more work put into it visually and gameplay wise.

Seriously guys, sometimes when I read comments like “beh this sucks, its only an otaku´s wet dream” or “Animu trololol” comments I really want to puke. How come so many people are so retarded that they completely ignore it for its style. Sure, it has its own Anime style, but so has P4U, the only thing why people dont bash it is because of its conservative character style and the big fanbase consisting of Arcsys and Persona Fans. Yeah, its different, so what? Isn´t it more fun to see something different on the screen than your average fistfighters and 08/15 energyballs thrower?
Talking about too few characters? You probably know that there are sure more to come. I´m quite sure that we will at least get another boss character to be playable, which makes it at at least 4 new characters on release, which is alright. I mean, if you think back to Tekken 4, it only had 3 new ones as did e.g. Soul Calibur 3 (I know those are old), but there noone bitched about it, here everyone does, why? And anyway by adding only a few characters at a time there are less balancing issues. I mean, you have your trash characters in any game, right (thinking of charcters like Phoenix Wright in mvc or Dan in SF), those are nearly non-existant there.
The DLC Argument? Yeah, there I agree with you guys that they are charging far too much for just one character. Though I think it´d be okay if they only would implement the feature that you could use the DLC chars in training mode, so that you can prepare against them and have no drawbacks from not buying them, like itt is in Skullgirls afaik.
And finally the combat system. I mean, everybody should know that this one is really hard to pick up and can be quite frustrating and overbearing at times, but finally its a very balanced game. Let´s have a look at lambda or Tager, both Character which just seem impossible to beat at the first glance. Though in the end they are just middle to low tier chars which have several weaknesses and people just dont realize. Of course even there you had your top tier characters, but which fighter dont?

Well finally what I wanted to say is: stop the hate and give the game a chance. I dont want to say that P4U or BB is better or that BB is better than any other bemu, but I want you guys to give it a chance it deserves and not to just throw it out of your spectrum.

Are you serious? If this follows up by a Chrono Phantasma Extand or some shit that charges you 40 bucks then I’m done with this.

I’m a hardcore fan of Arcsystem Works since 1998, I used to be proud of them because they put efforts in designing their games and they actually made them look promising. And now they become another Capcom that sells infinity rehashes. Those changes can be and should be patched in free (or just DLC that charges you 10 bucks). I’d love to pay for DLC by supporting a great game and a great company.
