JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure System Guide

With Capcom’s recent announcement of an HD re-release of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, SoetaSoeren took it up on himself to put together a video for those unfamiliar with the game’s fighting system. His guide covers everything from movement, attacks, and defense to the unique Stand mechanic. If you’re looking to grab JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure when it hits Xbox Live and Playstation Network in August, do yourself a favor and check this video out. Some of the text moves a little fast, so be sure to pause the video at appropriate moments to catch all the information it presents.

For further information on the game’s characters and battle mechanics, feel free to check out the Shoryuken and Stand Crash wikis.

One thing I don’t like? Number notation. Man, I HATE that crap. Who thought ti would be simpler to teach someone 6 is forward than say… FORWARD IS FORWARD.

    • robjarv

smdh if you don’t know by now that anime fighters use numpad notation

      • Smashbro29

I know they do, it doesn’t make it any less stupid.

because everyone in the FGC speaks english

      • Smashbro29

So use that languages word for forward maybe?

        • spectaa

Hopefully they aren’t as dumb as you.

          all 6000+ of them?

        • http://twitter.com/EshiMusic Chris 画師 Manning

awesome, so I should have to get a  translator every time I want to read a combo posted on a japanese site? that’s way more convenient than using a universal notation like numbers!

    • ZenTzen

First not everyone speaks english and pad notation is easier and universal and no its not just anime fighters that use this notation

      • Smashbro29

Yes it is just anime fighters and furthermore the SRK wiki of this game uses the better notation, on language see my other reply. On ease of use: consider this, if I play Mario do I tell someone to “6″ or do I tell them to walk forward?

        • ZenTzen

Heres a little bit of trivia for you, only in america do they use f,d,b notation, every other game even capcom fighters use number notation outside of the US, this stuff isnt hard, people are just lazy to learn, like i said this stuff is universal, if america didnt start using the d,f,b whatever then we wouldnt be discussing this now

          • Smashbro29

Guess what man? I’m not using meters or spelling the word “color” with a u either. Why is this different from that?

          • ZenTzen

maybe because you seem lazy and unable to learn something thats really easy to understand

          • OP8

I know you’re just a kid, but that really doesn’t excuse your ignorance.  People as dumb as you shouldn’t be allowed to voice their opinion.

        • http://twitter.com/Mightfo Mightfo

Soul Calibur 5 and Tatsunoko vs Capcom’s communities also use number notation. Not just BB/GG/MB/AH.

          • Eric Sheppard

Internally, both SF4 and SFxT show that the developers use the number notation as well for naming command normals.

          • TheAquacharger

        • ZenTzen

        • spectaa

no matter what language you speak everybody know up down left right” do you realize how idiotic this sentence made you sound?

        • OP8

I’m looking at your comment, and I don’t see any puncuation. I never see any commas, periods or apostrophes with any of your comments.

    • Mr_Kensou

EXACTLY!! I was just thinking how the number notation is such rubbish and garbo thing to reale. It’s VERY simple: DP=Dragon Punch motion, F=Forward, and so forth.

      But nevertheless, pretty decent video.

      • Smashbro29

Furthermore, the number notation is flawed in that you not only need to know this numberpad thing, you need to know what it’s like FLIPPED on the fly, whereas “forward” is relative to which direction the character is facing.

        • ZenTzen

no its not, you only need to know in number notation that 6 is forward, 4 is back, etc, like you say qcb, in number notation you just need to say 214, whats so hard to understand

          • Smashbro29

It’s hard to understand because while I try and decode this shit in my brain I picture a numberpad and do the translating so “236″ is down down-right than right on my actual numberpad a QCF from the opposite direction looks like “214″

          • ZenTzen

Maybe if you took the time to learn it you wouldnt have that problem, because from my point of view your making a huge deal out of something thats extremely simple

          • http://twitter.com/dougfunnie87 doug

well maybe you are just a fucken idiot then.

        • http://twitter.com/Mightfo Mightfo

6 is forward. F is forward. Same shit, no need to flip, it is always relative to opponents.

      • http://www.facebook.com/caiooa Caio Alzred

Cause it’s impractical to writed some comands by extense. Or you try to use the name of a fg  jargon for the commands ( fb, rdp, hcb, 360) or you use number notation.
Number notation is the universal cause sometimes you don’t have a jargon for a move.

        • Smashbro29

dp is definitely easier than “263″ and as for the rest of them instead of say… 6 for forward you could write F so it’d f, df. b. Incredibly difficult right?

          • http://twitter.com/Mightfo Mightfo

623 is quicker than f, d, df. dp is quicker than both though, yes, but i read “623b” quicker than “dpb” because of the contrast of shapes. But is a personal thing and pretty much everyone can get used to multiple systems, they are just arbitrary ways of organizing knowledge generally done on a community-by-community basis with some small, different advantages.

      • http://twitter.com/Mightfo Mightfo

It is quicker/easier for many to read 4B than b.b, 2c instead of c.c or d.c. The numbers contrast with letters and make it easier to skim. Plus, it is more international.

    • http://twitter.com/Mightfo Mightfo

You can get used to it like learning literally any other thing in fighting games. It is quicker for many situations/people to read due to things like numbers contrasting with letters(4B versus b.b or away medium or whatever the fuck.) and is more international.

Also, there’s a difference between speech and text. BBQ versus just saying Barbeque.

    • http://twitter.com/onReload onReload

Forward isn’t forward when you work across language barriers. And it’s a lot more cumbersome

    • spectaa

Forward means shit in Japan (and many other places  on the globe), don’t be surprised to see number notation here and there.

    • pootnannies

it’s good to know and use both depending on what language the person uses when passing info on combos and stuff. in this case the video was in english so i agree that only english speakers will understand anything in this vid but since this game is almost exclusively played by japanese it’s important that you get used to the numpad notation.

    • http://www.facebook.com/victoly Matthew Taylor

       Quit whining.

It’s just as simple if not simpler.

    • dietdrkelp

Did you yell at your teacher when variables was introduced in algebra? Numbers are quicker to understand. Not to mention one can easily visualize how the motion looks on a numpad. It takes a bit of getting used to, but why should that be a problem?

    • Blk_Azn

Oooo man Rosetta Stone for the FGC plz. haha

    • Kelohmello

Numbers are universal. It’s a large part of why we use them. If I tell a japanese guy who doesn’t know english that a combo uses quarter circle forward + heavy punch, he’s not gonna understand that. If I tell him 236HP, he could probably understand that, since we all know what numbers are.

    • spectaa

You guys are whining like babies about this. Some people use other notation than you, deal with it.

  • http://twitter.com/lchipoo Ichipoo

Hey, if a “weeaboo otaku anime” player like me can adjust to SF notation in just a day then I’m positive that the rest of you are competent enough to do the same in reverse, it’s not that hard. =

I honestly don’t see the issue of respecting the notation a community for game uses. If I’m learning how to play SF, I best be prepared to see SF notation on the forums, for games like MB, GG, BB, SC, etc. I’m expecting to see number notation. It really is not problem for me to switch my “notation lenses” and I do so because I want to respect the notation the community for that particular game uses. This “hurr durr I hate number notation” bashing I see occasionally is really silly to me if you ask me.

    • Barry Hui

i say just go with arrows. or bananas. everyone loves bananas.

    • Smashbro29

Capcom and SNK games use the “SF” notation, if I saw this on a BB thing, I wouldn’t comment (I’d still think it was dumb) but this is a Capcom game and I fail to see how the license used affects the community using a new notation.

      • http://twitter.com/Mightfo Mightfo

TVC also uses number notation. It has nothing to do with who made the game, it is a matter of what the community ended up doing.
Also, do you really think japanese people who make SF guides refer to quartercircle motions as QCF? I bet they use either something based on their language or number notation.

        • ZenTzen

number notation is japanese, the d,f,b notation was created by the american SF community because at the time they had no knowledge of the number notation thats why people are acting like this now

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_TIC7WNRSMFBSCLF6OR6JQJAAZA sb

why would i wanna learn notations when i rarely see it and my games doesnt use them and controllers and stick doesnt use it BECAUSE ITS USELESS i have yet to see a game come with a booklet or in game movelist that uses notations its just a PC thing

      • http://twitter.com/lchipoo Ichipoo

If you’re serious about learning how to play JoJo, then you better learn to RESPECT the notation that the community for that particular game used. Like I said before, I came from learning how to play anime fighters seriously first, then when the time came for me to learn how to play 3S and MvC2, rather than asking the members to switch to “number notations,” I RESPECTED their decision to use SF notation and took the time to LEARN their jargon. Sure I rarely play Capcom games but I wanted to learn their notation and jargon as a sign of GOODWILL to their players.

You and a few other members’ attitude is the same as a tourist who is another country for vacation but asking the locals to speak your native language simply because they can’t understand it and didn’t even bother to learn a few phrases in the locals’ language.

        • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_TIC7WNRSMFBSCLF6OR6JQJAAZA sb

learn how to play Jojo little late for that and i sure didnt learn from notations i have yet to see a guide with notations for any game there was no such thing as notations when i was growing up so why i need it now when they start making controllers and games that use it then ill learn
and im american my ps3 is in english and so is my games and when i ask it how to do a move it sure isnt notations so no tourist here

          • http://twitter.com/onReload onReload

When you were growing up, did they have punctuation marks?

          • Kudakero

            Seems not.
Anyway, all the discussion is quite dumb. If it wasn’t for notations people like japanese could not export the tech they find. I can only imagine how unfair it can get when you don’t know at all what the enemy can do. Just think about Evo. Americans would be wiped out in no time without knowing international notation.

Did you even read what I said? “use that word like this”. I didnt refer to it being used to refer to a musical genre, but a derogatory and simplistic term for a perceived type of character. Read carefully before you throw lazy insults like “You must be deaf”.

It’s really more of a hipster enabler to make themselves feel more underground. There’s enough FGC jargon within a game as well as fighters in general that throwing numbers into the mix to replace every basic direction is really just complexity for the sake of complexity.

      • Louis Lam

It’s not hipster when everyone except for american SF players are using it.

        • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=605514248 Ramy Rattana

I find it simpler to just use a number pad to drop down a couple commands to my friends, but there is always a handful that will bitch about what number is what and expect me to use QCF or HCB or DP.

          • TheAquacharger

yeah. I have that problem too. I’m so used to the numbers now that when people ask for a combo I give them the numbers. A few people get super pissed when I do that.

You speak the global business language. Doesn’t hurt me not to know another language but you’re at a disadvantage anywhere else in the world not to know some English. If they don’t understand DP, QCB, etc. it’s their loss.

I mean really, a command notation isn’t JUST numbers…there’s button inputs as well…you don’t have numbers for those and thus have to translate so..yeah…pointless and hipster

The only number notation that makes sense is Tekken since it’s lot easier to keep track of 4 numbers vs 9.

    • http://fuzzbuzzwar.tumblr.com/ Zeidust

The # notation is easy sauce.  I get more confused browsing character sub threads and see acronyms for their move sets.  BITD (pun), I didn’t know what AHVB meant.  It can be confusing as hell, and we need our own urban dictionary on this forum sometimes.
