Capcom Announces Street Fighter: Assassin’s Fist, a Live Action Series Set to Premiere in 2013

UPDATE – The announcement video shown at SDCC from the Street Fighter: Legacy crew has been added below.

Some of you may remember Street Fighter: Legacy, the short film created by Joey Ansah that showcased a short, well-choreographed fight between the series iconic rivals, Ryu and Ken. The project became quite popular when it was released, and Ansah expressed a desire to produce more Street Fighter related films if given the chance.

Well, it appears Capcom has given him that chance.

Today, news from San Diego’s Comic-Con surfaced that Yoshinori Ono announced Street Fighter: Assassin’s Fist, a  live action series produced by Ansah and his crew. This new project will explore the shared history between Ryu, Ken, Akuma, and Gouken, as well as the Ansatsuken fighting style.

Please note that the featured image and the one at the top of the article are taken from Legacy, not this new project.

hopefully it doesnt try too hard to match the actual games. It’ll look like power rangers if it does…

modernize the concept of the story of street fighter but don’t sacrifice the character relationships or personalities. It can be done very well if they spend enough time with the script.

Because no live action Street Fighter can ever be good, because two weren’t.

you have immensely more trust in any filmmakers and capcom than…um… anyone ive ever conceived of

        • http://handsomefatman.com/ Carlos Alexandre

I have little trust in either of these things. I’m just pointing out illogic.

          • fiks

             Fair enough.

        • Larsson K

You only have to look who was behind the movie and who made those movies as a reason why they failed. If you watch the Street Fighter Legacy Behind The Scenes featurettes you see these guys actually get it, because they are real fans, they play the games they know the cannon,

          • fiks

I dont think knowing the cannon really has much to do with a good movie :(

      • http://twitter.com/gogotwit Gojira Twit

Yeah let’s just ignore the hundreds of other failed attempts to make live-action video game films

        • http://twitter.com/HooliganCombo James Reilly

Lets also just ignore the handful that had some form of success as well.
As long as one movie did succeed to an extent  (there were many such as Resident Evil series, Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney ) then we should illogically call this a fail instantly right.?

Not a fan of live action SF, but live action video games film are usually hit or miss. They are doing a Live action Assassin creed where UBISOFT has creative room to do their movie. What determines what live-action video game movies really succeed or not is how much creative control the video game developers have (Script, choosing actors, etc)

          • http://twitter.com/gogotwit Gojira Twit

It’s not illogical to look at the overwhelming majority and expect a similar outcome.

        • Larsson K

I understand why you’ve come to that conclusion, but I completely disagree. You only have to look who was behind the movie and who made those movies as a reason why they failed. If you watch the Street Fighter Legacy Behind The Scenes featurettes you see these guys actually get it, because they are real fans, they play the games they know the cannon. http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL2E93AD8A2CB86C7B&feature=plcp

The team who did Legacy wanted to make a decent film with respect to the series, if you’re going to put someone to the task, it’s these guys.

People are whining as if they didn’t even watch Legacy.  We don’t know if it’s going to be good or bad, but from what we’ve seen and heard so far, there is hope.

They did a great job with Street Fighter Legacy (cinematography and fighting choreography was great) so i expect nothing less of what they have in store

  • Kaihedgie

Are people really complaining about live action even after seeing Street Fighter X Tekken? Doesn’t anyone remember that this movie originally started out as a fan project?

I hope that their talents are equal to their passion. Therefore, they do a good job. I wish for them, and for us, a good luck!

But not disparaging them, I wrote a screenplay adapted from SF1, SFZ, SF2. (I have in mind a book or graphic novel). I’m just looking for help to publish.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Gethoff-Mahfacebuk/558552166 Gethoff Mahfacebuk

Has anyone ever stopped to consider that maybe the reason a live action SF production winds up being corny, is because the source material and story are kinda corny already?

I saw the Legacy short, it wasn’t horrible.  Could wind up being a neat short series that closely follows the corny ass generic japanese “I must become stronger!” storyline that y’all hold so fucking dear to your hearts.  As long as it has some cool fight scenes, I’m in.

    • Kaihedgie

People like to think that stories of the things they grew up with are full of deep, philosophical stuff with hidden meanings that only smart people can apparently catch when in reality, it’s either nonsensical, pretentious, haphazardly told, or all of the above. Nostalgia filter is crazy like that.

Judging from the Street Fighter Legacy short and how faithful they tried to be to the series, I’m going to be cautiously optimistic, as this time its actually handled by people who actually grasp the concept of Street Fighter.

Live action doesn’t work because the costumes don’t translate to film, and neither do the over the top super moves.

    • http://www.facebook.com/AL.x.and.her Alexander ‘Al King’ Clay

It’s usually the costume designers fault for not knowing how to turn video game costumes into practical ones….ie. Tekken (2010)

    • Larsson K

Joey and Chris did a superb job with the costumes! Check out this video, it goes behind the scenes for the costume design in Legacy - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m_iwoR6WOw8&list=PL2E93AD8A2CB86C7B&index=3&feature=plpp_video

They should get the “Thousand Pound” production…. they did a way better live action short-film then this guys, Legacy was decent and I hope the best for them with this new approach, but SFxT live action was a TOP line production… if was me, I would choose them.

  • Ultimator

If this was SFxT live action then the movie would be twice as long as the SF version due to all the timeouts

  • http://www.facebook.com/DashingKC K.c. Cannady

Ummm.. Quick Question, Ryu, Ken, Gouki & Gouken soooooooooo Capcom, wheres Dan? Look, you cannot have a Shoto series without Dan he’s the only one with a sense of personality for crying out loud other than Ken every now and then! He was one of the first students of Gouken & at the time took learning the technique very seriously by wanting to kill Sagat. Capcom is pushing Dan away to much these days when he’s the greatest fighter of all time :( We want Saikyo! PLS

    • Kaihedgie

Capcom isn’t “pushing him” away. He’s just sadly not as popular as the rest of the shotoclones, that’s all.

In like a year, this has been the most excited I’ve been for anything Capcom related. SF:Legacy was the most badass live action movie the franchise has ever seen.

  • Thomaz Barros

I for one hope that Reuben will be Ken.

  • D Major

In order for any Street Fighter movie to work, it can’t be cosplay, it can’t be stereotypical (Ryu & Ken fight… who saw that coming?), and it can’t be cheesy contrived special effects.  It has to be a tastefully done martial arts movie.  20+ years, we’re still waiting.

Did any of you watch MK Legacy? i know it’s sorta rival to SF and maybe not best to bring it up on a SF website. I personally love SF, and was excited at the prospect of SF legacy becoming something more. But all this talk of modernising while keeping style and keeping true to source material made me think of the MK web series. Maybe it bares thinking about as an example of how a beat em up video game can be successfully turned live action.
