Shoryuken.com Introduces the Evo Annual $10,000 College Scholarship for Gamers

At EVO, we love competitive gaming, but we also know there’s more to it than simply seeing who is the best. Having run these tournaments for nearly 20 years, I’ve seen first-hand that deep and positive impact the community around these games can have on young people’s lives. I’ve watched lifelong bonds of friendship form out of competition, and seen my former competitors grow to run gaming related businesses of their own, find other industry jobs, and even create new games.

It’s clear to me that it’s the players that make fighting games so special. The top players are our heroes during competitions, but hundreds of thousands of competitors from around the world also use the game as an outlet to measure themselves, a reason to get up and out of the house, and meet amazing new friends in person, as well as online. As prize pools grow and the top players get their well-deserved time in the spotlight, we also want to remember that it’s the open, egalitarian nature of the fighting game scene, rooted in the personal connections inspired by arcades, that keeps it strong.

To continue this great tradition, it’s critical to support the next generation of players and help show that competitive gaming is not just a way to test yourself, earn great prizes, and connect with fellow players, it can also be a gateway to a fulfilling industry profession. To highlight this and pay-it-forward to the next generation of gamers, we are announcing an annual $10,000 scholarship for a student enrolled at an accredited university studying towards a degree in game design, game development, or computer science.

The scholarship will be initially financed by the Evo 2012 pay-for-view hd stream. All pay-for-view profits will go into the Evo Scholarship fund. I believe in this so strongly that I’m going to personally guarantee the $10,000 scholarship. If the HD stream is successful, it will cover the costs. If not, I will pay the scholarship out of my pocket.

      B) I don’t know the majority of people in the FGC but I’m doubtful most want to earn careers in these 3 areas.

      Im majoring in animation and would be interested in it too. Makes me happy to see something like this. These types of communities tend not to be considered as extracurricular activities, even tho they function similar to traditional sports and clubs. The hip hop and bboy community is starting to do this as well, another endeavor that requires a certain amount of commitment but without any curricular rewards. Things like this certainly make the FGC look a little better to me than in the past (as im sure it will to others). Hope it all goes well guys.

    Not saying this isn’t cool, this rules.  But I kinda gotta nitpick at the scope of degrees covered.  I would think EE would be a great fit in the scholarship.  Take a look at Tech Talk and you’ll see that the modders and tinkerers of the FCG are a very smart bunch that deserve a lot.

    For the record I am not an EE student myself, I just think leaving out EE is a glaring omission.

    As much as I believe this is a noble cause and it really will help towards someone’s future education, I think you should be open to the fact that many game developers are mostly self taught, with the degree just being the piece of paper that gets them in the door for an interview. As a professional photographer and web developer, i think creative industries such as programming are made up of skills that can only be learned through devoting countless hours  into practicing your passion. The same could be said for gaming i suppose. Props to you and I encourage you to perhaps in the future have a competition for people who can complete a design/programming brief of your choosing~

    Got to agree that it’s a bummer that those who don’t want a career in those fields can’t qualify. Not to mention those are degrees you get primarily through online pay4degree schools. I’m going to a large public university for advertising/marketing and have a business degree. I would love a chance to use them in the gaming field, but to be honest, ‘game design’ is about as limiting and specific as degrees get. Combine that with the fact the the Computer Science field has hit a bubble and is totaly oversaturated (everyone from my age group that was a nerd did this), I can’t think of a good reason for people to pursue them at this point other than thinking being good at games translates to being good at making them.

      Thanks for sending your thoughts.  I just disagree, especially with your point of view on a CS “bubble.” I’ve worked in software engineering for 18 years, most of that in a hiring roll. We have never had enough high quality candidates — kids with BS or MS degrees from a 4 year university.  In fact, the US annually grants 65,000 H1-B Visas to foreign professionals, many of them software engineers, because the US isn’t generating enough world-class engineers.
