Record Attendance as Competitors Duel for over $100,000 at the Evo 2012 World Finals

The 2012 EVO World Finals will host a record number of competitors and attendees hailing from over 40 countries, as thousands assemble to compete for championships across today’s hottest fighting games.

Thanks to generous support for the community from our sponsors, we’re pleased to announce record prizes, including $23,000 for Mortal Kombat, $15,000 for Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown, and more!

“With Capcom celebrating its 25th Anniversary of Street Fighter this year, we thought it fitting that Evo’s Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition 2012 competitors should play for $25,000,” said Christian Svensson, Senior Vice President at Capcom.  ”Capcom wouldn’t be where it is today without the support of our hardcore fans, and this is just the first of many exciting opportunities to help celebrate this milestone for the Street Fighter franchise.”

Here are the prize pools for all of the Evo 2012 tournaments.  All these tournaments will pay out to the top 8 finishers.

  • $25,000 Super Street Fighter IV, Arcade Edition 2012
  • $23,000 Mortal Kombat 9
  • $15,000 Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3

Thank God I only work every other day! I should be able to catch ALL of marvel. I’m so hype for this year.

      Marvel… Really?
The competition in Street Figher is going to be hype, with 25k riding on it.
Marvle will be ok to watch, but SSFIV is where its going to be this year.

    Yo, Esports….
Shout outs to people only signing up for KOF ’cause of a free T-Shirt.

    • http://twitter.com/HooliganCombo James Reilly

To be fair concerning KOF, some of those entrants are pot monsters that don’t mind getting DQ because they get a free shirt with Mai on it with a relatively nice design going on just for entering. To say how many? not sure, but i don’t think that many will drop out. Just noting that if the other games had a similar incentive to draw entrants into their game by just entering early then their “entrant numbers” would have a varied increase.

      • http://www.facebook.com/DannyFandom Danny Alvarado

You see those spots are a waste. Someone who could possibly blow our minds in KOF could have been allowed to compete, but unfortunately those spots are taken by some lame asses who can barely input a fireball.

        • ZenTzen

how so, as far as i know theres no limit to how many people can compete in a certain game and who knows maybe some of those that may have initially joined the kof tourney may actually play and surprise people and lets hope that a good number of those guys actually took a liking to the game

        • d3v

It’s not like they are taking slots. There is no limit to how many people can enter the tournsment.

    • http://www.facebook.com/victoly Matthew Taylor

Last I remember, entry fee is pretty steep.

I don’t know how many people would drop that much money down just for a T-shirt.

      • http://www.facebook.com/DannyFandom Danny Alvarado

Oh people did do this. It’s got mai in it.
“lulz Big titty bitch… Don’t know what game she’s from… Don’t play KOF! Free Shirt! lolololol”

      • http://twitter.com/B1jyu Stano Jaeger

It was 10 dollars to enter a tournament and get a shirt that would cost more than 10$ anywhere else at an event people are already paying to go to. Hell I entered KoF just for the shirt. But for the last month ive been making sure I have a decent enough handle on the game to at least put up a fight against all the other pot monsters.

        • http://twitter.com/ffloversv teufelherz

I did the same but I am really, really bad at it.

  • GO4PRO

lol @ SFxT. RIP after evo

    • FLStyle

Don’t forget the $500,000 Capcom Tournament season that goes from July to November, people will play SFxT in those events for easy money.

    • http://twitter.com/_Pedrofeijo Pedro Feijó

And yet the game maneged to get a bigger prize pot than SCV. Although Capcom might have something to do with this, since SFxT it is in their 25th Anniversary main line up, but still, where the Soul Calibur players at?

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Gethoff-Mahfacebuk/558552166 Gethoff Mahfacebuk

SC players makin money at MLG right now.

      • ZenTzen

Its Capcom money that was divided by the 3 capcom game, but atleast SC has more players than MK at EVO

        • bipolar_shango

MK9 is over a year old so, yeah.

          • http://twitter.com/HooliganCombo James Reilly

SF4 is roughly 3-4 years old, but then Capcom does try to keep that game alive

    • http://twitter.com/HooliganCombo James Reilly

not so sure. Capcom Will try to keep it alive in the states with big $$$

  • Fenaris

Any news on official entry numbers?  Great to hear record attendance, but seeing an actual number would be awesome.

    • http://twitter.com/Calcos323 Calvin Cyr

We probably won’t see an actual number until the tournament is over.  The current attendance is only speculation, because not everyone who registered will be able to attend, what with emergencies and all that.

  • MaikkyWin

    MK9 > UMVC3

    Freedom

    • Hombre_Gran_Jefe

It took NRS kicking in $20k, but congrats MK fanbois!  You did it!  You have the biggest prize pool for a game not celebrating it’s 25 year anniversary!  Say hi to all the BlazBlue players on the sidelines for us next year.  Sincerely, MvC Fanbois.

      • MaikkyWin

uyamadthough juz cuz mk is a better game then any capcom games .

           ^Fail…

        • ZenTzen

Are you trippin, MK would be dead right now if it wasnt for MLG or NRS putting money at EVO

          • http://www.squidoo.com/fightinggamesonline fighting games online

you guys are in serious denial MK has a better scene in most states compared to the other titles I would say UMVSC3 and MK are two of the most popular titles when it comes to competitive games.

          • ZenTzen

Cant beat the facts dude, its the game with the lowest turnout of players at Evo and it has a 23k pot, where did the players go if it has such a popular and stable scene.

      • http://twitter.com/HooliganCombo James Reilly

You really did NOT save face trying to represent a “mvc fanbois” lol

        • Hombre_Gran_Jefe

No, I did not.  Does that comment in any way do anything but embarrass fanbois?  No, I believe it doesn’t.

        • Hombre_Gran_Jefe

No, I did not.  Does that comment in any way do anything but embarrass fanbois?  No, I believe it doesn’t.

  • http://twitter.com/CommanderPepper Humza Ahmad

    yo esports

    • http://twitter.com/_Esca__ Zenosis

and in the eSports side…. 1 league has already dished out 2 million $ in prizemoney for players for 1 game.

  • http://twitter.com/hentailogic hentailogic

So Netherealm gave 20k pot bonus to MK9. For a total of 23k prize money, this means around 300 players entered the event for 10$ each. 300 mk9 players for Evo when MLG gets 80 players.

KOF XIII has 1100 players signed up!!!!

    • http://twitter.com/HooliganCombo James Reilly

How many of those signed up for the Mai t-shirt incentive just for entering though? There are gonna be pot-monsters who are gonna DQ themselves. How many though? not sure and I doubt not too many, but you have to be a moron saying that they would have broke 1k without that incentive just for entering the pools

      • http://twitter.com/hentailogic hentailogic

I only made a quick comment about there being a lot of sign-ups for KOF, never said that they could have done it without the shirt.

You should learn to read before calling other people names. A person posted about the shirt being a big factor before me, and Mr. Wizard has been saying that on twitter too. I didn’t feel the need to repeat the obvious again, something a moron like you might not understand.

        • http://twitter.com/HooliganCombo James Reilly

ooh bravo *claps. So what part of that post made you look any less of a “moron” of what i was not indirectly calling you personally? Learn the difference between making a general statement versus a personal insult “moron”. seriously so many insecure people here nowadays…

          • http://twitter.com/hentailogic hentailogic

“but you have to be a moron saying that they would have broke 1k without that incentive just for entering the pools”

Either learn to read or learn to write properly before calling other people names, fool. Good job trying to insult others to try to look smart, moron.

  • http://www.justinbaisden.com Justin Baisden

Can we get a little clarification on something? Is the $25000 on top of the already established prize pool or absorbing that pool? You have to figure the prize pool for AE would be $15000 – $20000 through player entry alone. Assuming Capcom is donating a capped $25000, where’s the rest of the entry money going?

    • http://twitter.com/hentailogic hentailogic

I’m sure some of the Capcom money went to UMvC3.

They were saying a while back that in terms of entrants SF4 was #1 and KOF was #2, so Evo took the Capcom money and raised UMvC3 prize money to 15 000$.

Maybe they also put some of the Capcom money to SFxTekken. What Evo does makes  a lot of sense to me so it’s all good.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=514612276 Greg Graham

so glad im going cant wait to get bodied

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Gethoff-Mahfacebuk/558552166 Gethoff Mahfacebuk

I get being realistic about not beating like, Justin or something.  But you should be excited about goin and bodying some people on your way to that point, yknow?

      • MuhhPhukka

You either body all or body none.

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_253HNXRNYAWK3U7F3IIQGZFLB4 Trey Beatz

son he wanna b excited about gettin bodied let em be excited about gettin bodied  everybody aint ash ketchum out tryna be the very best that ever was.

        • http://twitter.com/HooliganCombo James Reilly

Ash Ketchum was a noob trainer lol who always gets bodied in those Pokemon tournaments. “Red” was the correct term to make your point

          • http://www.facebook.com/people/Almeson-Hoku-James/100000479628267 Almeson Hoku James

            Omega Red?

          • http://twitter.com/HooliganCombo James Reilly

No “Red” is the game/manga counter-part of the anime version of “Ash Ketchum/Saioshi” which came out later. “Red” got stuff done with his pokemon making “Ash” look like a scrub slime monster you kill in one hit.

      • Jake Long

Hell, I’m somewhere around 7-80 in Marvel last time I checked and I would STILL be hype as hell to get bodied at Evo, so Greg, I’m feeling ya.

    • Kageromaru

You’ll be surprised at the wide range of skill levels you’ll see at Evo.  More than likely, if you’re a person that plays at a moderate level, it’s very likely that you’ll go at least 4-2.  A couple of years back, after winning four matches in a row in SSF4, I got bodied by a decent Chun-Li player I didn’t know.  Then, immediately afterwards, I got a more severe beatdown from Yipes.

Have confidence!  You’ll never know how far you’ll get.

  • http://www.kineda.com Kineda

Nice!  Go Capcom!!! :D Can’t wait for Evo this year. :)

    • http://twitter.com/CEOJebailey Alex Jebailey

It’s gonna be CRAZY! PS I owe you a ton of drinks at EVO :( . I was tired damn it lol.

Let’s party Alex!  I’m picking up the G155 after playing with ya on it.  Love how portable it is.

  • http://twitter.com/Manny99Fresh Manuel Castillo

Now this makes me REALLY sad that I can’t go now, I’m all signed up and everything too :( oh well I’m going to try my hardest to go next year.

  • PointCtrPoint

From this we can at least determine that based on the $10 entry fee per tourney and no other additional monies added to the prize pots of certain games:

    Umvc3: 1500 entrants
SFxT: 900 entrants (450 or so teams)
KOF13: 1100 entrants (tshirts or not)
    SCV: 500 entrants

    • Bavo Bruylandt

werent there many pot bonuses announced already? Highly doubt anyone can run a tournament with over 1000 players

edit: I was wrong, there are over 1500 players in AE. Good god.

    • Bavo Bruylandt

seems like if you can figure out how large the pools are you can see how many players there are: http://shoryuken.com/evo2012/brackets/

  • http://twitter.com/akumous akumous

If you guys want to bet me you can because I am positive an unknown skilled player is going to win most of these major games. Bala is going to be humbled in KOF13; We already witnessed a surprised upset where Diago got dethroned and a new king was crowned but get ready for another in SSFIVAE 2012; I don’t who is going to take UMVC3 but it won’t be Justin Wong; I can’t speak for the rest because I am not psychic but the monetary prizes are up of grabs on a global scale and the real killers are hungry.

    akumous.blogpost.com

    • Jake Long

I definitely think there will be someone who has a major run, but I don’t see any ‘unknown’ guy winning.

      Marvel: Combofiend
      AE: Wolfkrone
      MK9: Tom Brady
KOF: I’m American, so I’m legally required to pick Bala
      SCV: Shen Chan
SFxT: The Dudley Boyz reunite and run in during Grand Finals, 3D’ing everyone through tables.  It will be EVO Moment #54.

      • http://www.facebook.com/julienlandry1981 Julien Landry

Wolfkrone wont make top 8 this year…. top 32 at beast !!!

      • Vincent Hewitt

lolz if you think Combofiend has a chance in hell of winning UMvC3

    • Bama_X

Tried the link!  It doesn’t work!

    • xelad1

Who are all the unknown people from last year.  Are you implying that Poongko, Latif, Fuudo etc. are all UNKNOWN players????  Get real son.  Justin didn’t win Marvel last year but who was above him?  PR Rog and Viscant… 2 other amazing and well known players.  The only people in MVC3 top 8 last year who were relatively surprising were Mine and X-Ray.

As for Balla:  Its all about consistency.  I don’t follow KOF much but Balla has been doing well every major he’s entered.  If he does get “dethroned” its not going to be by some random.

  • witebuddha

is there a number on the attendance cap? like how many people are they expecting in general this year?

    • ZenTzen

Thats right man, despite a lot of entrants being there because of the tshirt(looking at all the esports guys thinking its just because of money people enter tourneys) i hope we get to see some really hype matches and also really hoping that those guys at least trained for the game and go out there with a new appreciaton for one of the great FGs of this generation

Just over 1500 for SF4.  Crazy.  About 950 for KOFXIII isn’t bad at all, and about 1240 or so for UMVC3 is expected.

    • ZenTzen

Actually KOF is at 1072 entrants

  • thirdstrikesucks

Most hype for $0 guaranteed Third Strike tournament with nearly 4 entrants!

Are you going to go to EVO and bring your ThirdStrikeSucks poster?

  • http://twitter.com/dihnmohr dihn mohr

So we reached a point, where the “biggest” games are the ones where devs are posting money, instead of the best games (hi VF5). Still, glad that SF4 and UMVC3 are up there. I’m really looking forward to watch those two games at EVO :)

    • PointCtrPoint

Sega put in money for VF5.

    • http://twitter.com/HooliganCombo James Reilly

…your point is? I can just twist your statement and say Sega are cheapskates compared to Capcom and NeatherRealm

      • http://twitter.com/hentailogic hentailogic

Sega donated 15 000$ to the pot, so only an idiot like you would say that Sega is a cheapskate.

Learn how to spell NetherRealm fool.

    • d3v

VF5 also didn’t release in time for EVO (which was March at the latest). The tournament is simply an official side tournament hosted by Sega, not EVO.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ricky-Brown/100000273705129 Ricky Brown

Good. FIghting games have stood on their own for a long time now and they seem to be doing just fine without e-sports. Look at dem prizes. We are and have been a great community.

    • Bavo Bruylandt

Why would evo and FG competition not be esports? It’s living for a large part on sponsorships.

  • CHIEFMEGADETH

    Awesome…
Cant wait for EVO, My top games i wanna watch
1.MK9 By FAR Greatest FG out IMO. So much hype for this game.
    2.SFxT Cant wait 448 Teams (896 entrants) that’s amazing
3.VF5FS. Just got into VF on release of VF5FS. so much fun to play.haven’t played since VF2 on Saturn.
    4.SSF4 AE Great game.
5.SCV Haven’t watched any tourneys lately, but will for EVO
6.KOF XIII Haven’t got it yet,but i wants it. This game is looking good.

So many great fighting games his year. always going to be haters no matter what game you like.
Just watch the games you like, hatters gonna hate.

  • RELLIK .exe

WOW. I’m with Keits on this, we need better prize payout at this level.

    • http://www.facebook.com/julienlandry1981 Julien Landry

They should pay something between 2% or 5% of the crowd (with a minimum 3 pay out for smaller tournament), so no matter how many people enter if you’re in the best 2% or 5% of entrant you would get payed. Top 8 / 1500 entrants is ridiculous, 0.5% of people will make money ? This should be a bit more like poker, you’re 1 of the best and you make money, don’t need to be the best…. that would be a good incentive to get better I think because the goal would be reachable.
