MLG Pro Circuit Spring Championship Tournament Results

This weekend sees the next step in Major League Gaming’s Pro Circuit hit Anaheim, California for a variety of competitive gaming action, including Starcraft II, League of Legends, King of Fighters XIII, Soul Calibur V, and Mortal Kombat. The fighting brackets are absolutely stacked with strong competitors, which should make for an exciting three days of action in a few of your favorite games.

But what would a tournament be without a great stream? Luckily, fighting games at MLG Anaheim have their very own stream, and personalities from the community will be commentating the entire thing to keep you up to date from match to match. Juicebox will  be heading up the commentary team for every game, with the Answer joining him for King of Fighters XIII, Bibulus for Soul Calibur V, and Tom Brady for Mortal Kombat.

We’ve included the stream below, but you can always head on over Twitch TV to join the chat. Links to the brackets have also been posted, so be sure to check those out for previews of upcoming matches.

No.  I do not agree.  I dream of a fighting game tournament that runs on time, caters to its players, and doesn’t make anyone play in the bathroom.  Thanks to MLG, I don’t have to just dream that shit anymore.

Have you ever stood in five-foot-wide corridor crunched with 20 other people because Texas Showdown set up your game in a small walkway leading to the shitter?  Have you ever showed up to a hotel lobby at 8:55am only to be told your game’s matches don’t start till 3:00pm?  Have you ever seen a player step up and run a SFxT pool because the guy running the bracket got sleepy and left?  HAVE YOU EVER SEEN A DOUCHEBAG WHO WAS IN CHARGE OF RUNNING THE MK BRACKETS SAY “HEY!  LET’S MAKE THESE TWO GUYS PLAY IN THE FUCKING BATHROOM TO SPEED THIS SHIT UP”!?!?!

And those assholes had the balls to say the MK players did it on their own initiative.  Planet-fucking-Zero.

let’s equate PZ with the whole FGC even though most people in the FGC know that PZ is a joke!

          • fiks

Both MortalKomment and,, of course, sb and ndebe the trolls are idiots. Using Texas Shodown to represent the FGC is hilarious, but accusations like “golf clapping” for MLG are of course silly. Anaheim looks like a good tourney, the FG crowd has been hype.

          • http://twitter.com/MortalKomment MortalKomment

Here’s the thing (and this is in response to Fiks, too).  Scheduling problems isn’t something new.  It’s been an on-going problem in numerous majors.  This also wasn’t the first time MK’s been screwed in the setup location (that happens a lot, actually).

Most of all, even the most well-organized grass roots tournaments can fall victim to unforeseeable contingencies (Recently Power-Up and especially APEX).  I have much respect for the grass root tournaments, but at the same time, we should push for a higher standard.  A weak stream (which isn’t even that weak) is not a reason to put MLG as a whole on blast.  Truthfully, I’d like both to co-exist.

there is a difference between trolling and telling the truth FIKS so fiks yo face and having 1 bad tournament experience speaks for the whole FGC GTFO i could care less what MLG do as long as we have EVO and the road to EVO tournaments the FGC aint going nowhere you wanna know what a FGC tournament looks like check out ECT on twitch.tv/TeamSp00ky i wouldnt want to see it no other way and im sure most feel the same way

I feel like if the entry was just lower, like $25, then there would have been a much larger turnout. Seems however that MLG and KoF just don’t mesh though.

    • Ndebe

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_WV4VCJ2UTS43PU4IZO4GQZEV7M wuy

The difference between $25 and $50 is insignificant when a hotel room for 1 night costs more than your entry fees……. people will turn out if you give them compelling reasons to turn out. And MLG failed to do that.

    • http://twitter.com/md_nu bananas

Well, despite how big the prize pool was at MLG, seems like ECT still got more KOF entrants, and got 5 times the viewer count, and a billion times the hype. MLG needs to learn a thing or two from community tournaments instead of just “hey lets throw money at these guys and they’ll fold immediately!”. It’s a shame KOFXIII is off the MLG roster now, but I guess KOF is more at home with community-ran tournaments than MLG apparently.

  • http://www.squidoo.com/fightinggamesonline fighting games online

It was nice to see Tokido shake things up a bit but as it stands Socal players are still the strongest players one the planet when it comes to KOF XIII B.A.L.A is looking infinitely unstoppable but the real test comes at EVO!!! viva la KOF.

Cannot wait to see BALA/SoCal vs Dakou or Xiaohai.

      • http://twitter.com/BongoRosso Isaac

Unless they’ve taken the time to learn their HD combos, I dont see them beating BALA if they face each other at Evo. They were pretty rusty in that aspect in SS and if Tokido had known the Billy match up, he could’ve probably won.

Im more eager to see MadKof playing against BALA.

    • http://www.squidoo.com/fightinggamesonline fighting games online

I honestly think MLG was just looking for alternatives for whatever reason capcom is not budging on going to MLG. KOF XIII seemed like a good choice, it has gained some popularity, it is going to be at EVO in a big way, but more importantly I believe Atlus themselves showed interest and the CEO himself has stated that he isn’t going to “foot the bill” on these games. So it was the support of Atlus the interest of MLG at the end of the day they gave it another chance because of West coast in general is in fairly strong support of KOF. On top of that MLG is waay to close to majors I mean they put KOF up right after final round and then they bring this one up right before EVO it was just a little to late you have to plan these things at least a year in advance like EVO like Final Round.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/João-Grassini/100003044683998 João Grassini

         thanks for the actual answer

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Yan-Zhao/10516382 Yan Zhao

I just wish MLG would stop scheduling their freaking events to always conflict with a FGC major. It happened last time too. They’d have so much more entrants if they didnt conflict with ETC. Hell it was located in such a convenient place for all the Cali people to attend.

        • http://www.squidoo.com/fightinggamesonline fighting games online

It made sense for them to do it this time around. The Spring Championship was held the week of E3 the biggest gaming convention known to man. You are talking about hundreds maybe thousands of people flying in from around the world to come to this event so to me it makes complete sense for them to have it that on the same week. Nothing against ETC but maybe they should have scheduled their tournament on another weekend.

I think the real issue in this case is that its scheduled close to EVO so anyone making plans to play KOF XIII was planning to go to EVO and they announced it from last year(as well in the case of FR around the one in Ohio) so that is mostly likely why the numbers for this championship were low.

If MLG had waited to announce the fighting games last year they would have most likely gotten a better turn out with the one CA and the one in Ohio. Their banking on the big pay out bring folks in and it did work for them in the case of the championship in Ohio but SCV and MK9 have a good amount of players on the east coast so you can argue that as the only reason for the good turnout in those two games.

I don’t know how MLG does there scheduling they do have other games besides Fighting games they have take into consideration there only doing this fighting simply because they can. At the end of the day folks have to choose if there going to support the majors which I believe EVO needs to have a bigger hand in or MLG which isn’t budging on the dates they plan to do their events.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_WV4VCJ2UTS43PU4IZO4GQZEV7M wuy

Originally they were planning on dropping it, but they were convinced by Arthuo and others that the turnout for KOF in SoCal will be much better than the turnout previously. Unfortunately too many KOF players are Capcom players who just play KOFXIII as an alternative, but wouldn’t travel specifically for KOF if there’s no Capcom games.

      • http://www.facebook.com/AL.x.and.her Alexander ‘Al King’ Clay

It’s very unfortunate that KOF turnouts aren’t as big as they are, despite it being one of the longest running most consistent franchises.

        • http://www.squidoo.com/fightinggamesonline fighting games online

I beg to differ. I’m a big fan of KOF  BUT for a franchise to have ran sooo long without a real upgrade, that says to me that it either wasn’t worth it to do so or they just didn’t have the resources either way that is why KOF is in the state it is in today in my opinion.

I mean 95 was the most popular game in the franchise and arcades were pretty much starting to go on the decline from that point. Year after year they did the best they could with the hardware they had but it was limited it sorely needed an upgrade and they buckled to 3d pressure not to long after with samurai 64.

It really screwed up on the first upgrade because that had a chance to make a very big impression. I look at KOFXIII like a new franchise it needs time to grow, it needs to be introduced to a knew generation and that is definitely going to take some time and dedication from the developers to continue its support which at this point seems dormant.

  • SpironENG

first off all good stuff to all the players and all the people working on the mic and behind the camera.  i wanna say i think MLG does a lot of things well. they hire people from the community. its not some random bums its people we know and trust……….that being said.

how the fuck are the pots this small? cause i see ad’s lots of ads not just on the stream, but at the event. big time sponsorships.  now i don’t think the people running MLG are simply pocking that money, but it has to be going some where.

is it the production valve? the stages are damn  nice and not cheap i am sure, plus the booths for Starcraft and LoL. i just wish i saw bigger pots. surely if they are pulling these kinds of big names they can front some more cash. 2,500 for KOF that is nothing to laugh at and good on them for making it happen. it just makes me go hmmmmmmm when i see a 4,500 pot up at ECT for MVC3 with no big ad support. a grass root system getting more money in  a players pocket then a corporate machine.

it just makes me wonder. i need to do my homework on this

    • Chocofluffy

The big name sponsors are for the full event not just for the Fighting Games. Which arguably have a much smaller following due to all this FGC hate on MLG/e-sports. The fact of the matter is Starcraft had rediculously small prize purses the first year it ran as MLG has a specific yearly budget they work around and which they may be able to increase depending on attendance and interest in the games.

TL:DR – Turn up, support MLG/e-sports and voice your love of your game and you can expect the prize pools to grow and for more streams/stages to watch your games…

MLG streams are the most boring thing ever. I try… I really do.. but even games I enjoy I can’t watch on there for more than 10 minutes. Guess I’m not the only one when MLG has  3k viewers and tourneys like ECT4 has over 15k. (during the same games being played, so don’t go all “hurrdahurr thats cuz they show capcom games” please)

MLG has no hype whatsoever which is what the FGC is all about.

    • Chocofluffy

You do realize the MLG site stream has its own specific viewer count which is separate from the twitch TV viewer count?

      • http://twitter.com/md_nu bananas

Except even the esports community is questioning MLG on their transparency in terms of reporting viewer statistics. “Oh hey we got 4 million viewers this weekend!” Really? Were they unique visitors? Nothing from MLG about that.

I totally agree, that’s why I was saying wait until there is an actual MLG press release and some more solid information on things like unique viewer counts etc.

Not a message from twitter by Sundance.

view counts aside.. it’s still boring as hell to watch.

Yeah, because they spent so much freaking time between matches for random interviews and commentary. I mean props to Juicebox, Tom Brady, and whoever else was involved. But damn let us watch the matches instead of listening to babbles 90% of the time. This is why most people rather just watch the match archives later.

    MLG that esports money….

say what you want about MLG is entertaining and professional and as a “True FGC” member.. i support everything with Fighting Games involved… theres no “which side is better bullshit to me” maybe one day people can get  their heads out their asses and  things can get better from both sides.

    also once again….”that esports money”

I had a chance to speak with a lot of people from the FGC this weekend and there are a lot of differing opinions on these issues but I know they can be ironed out. I just want to thank those in the audience as well as the players and fans for helping learn and embrace the FGC this weekend. I got a fight stick and I’m ready and willing to learn :D

I also give it to the FGC for having the most vocal crowd despite it being the smallest!

I have nothing against fighting games being at MLG I think their production is awesome, the prize money is fantastic, but its as you said it best vocal despite the small crowd. The small crowds are due mostly impart to the big arena that is MLG. When you have so many games in one place ,some are bound to get lost in that space and I felt like the FGC crowd was one of those that did.

The fact is unless you are a competitive gaming junkie not everything is going to appeal to you as it shouldn’t because we all have different tastes ,and its not to say we can’t grow and learn to enjoy the different interests that are offered ,but those interests are usually generated in the homes, lan centers, and last standing arcades before their appreciated on the level of what MLG has to showcase.

I feel like MLG could be the Olympiad of gaming but what it can’t be is the major league of gaming there are just to many games to create that sort of cohesiveness especially when something as great as the FGC has done so well to stand on its own from a “grass roots” level. I believe EVO can make that happen and its doing so and within a given time it can be the standard for league competition where the FGC is concerned. Anyway it goes I’m interested to see how it will all turn out I wish u guys the best of luck.

Honestly…having watched MLG it was actually pretty entertaining. There were a lot of “hype” matches and the commentary was really good. Sure the commercial breaks were annoying but they were much shorter than they were at Ohio.

Honestly, the only thing I feel the event needed were more spectators(and even then there were a decent amount of people during certain matches). Also, I really liked the interviews since some of them were pretty amusing.
I dunno, seems to me that if anything people are just trying to keep this eSports vs. FGC thing going when overall I feel like this could be a good thing for both.

Unlike most of the people that posted here, I attended MLG Anaheim in person and judging from the perspective of a person that’s been in the FGC scene for over a decade, well before this silly acronym even came to be, it’s clear to me that FGC can learn a few things from how MLG and esports in general does it. I’ll leave it at that for now.

Agreed. All hype and Capcom aside, MLG does a lot of things right. One of those things is doing a great job of displaying the true competitive nature of fighters with great and professional play by play commentary from players that have a deep understanding of the game mechanics. Match-ups are focused; the event was well organized. The only thing missing in my opinion, is the much needed support from the FGC……as all non-Capcom related things in the FGC usually need.
