Ed Boon’s Injustice: Gods Among Us Showing from E3 2012 Includes Stage Interactivity, Mortal Kombat Similarities

Like most game developers and publishers this week, Ed Boon is currently at E3 2012 showing off NetherRealm Studios’ upcoming DC Universe fighter, Injustice: Gods Among Us. He recently sat down with Spike TV to talk about the game a bit, accompanied by some new gameplay footage. While little new information is disclosed, the supplemental video shown during the interview displays a variety of similarities to Mortal Kombat, including the Flash’s ground pound, Batman’s harpoon grab, and the possibility of breakers being included in this game. There’s also short looks at the stage interactivity the company has been hyping in recent showings.

Special thanks to TRMK for capturing this footage and making it available.

      Blatant troll is blatant.

      • Nikkawhat

I’m a troll because I don’t share your apparent fanaticism?  Oh yes, let’s have interactive environments and 2 minute long cutscene animations for “supers” and stage-crashing moments.  How long ’til that wears off?  Sure, it’ll be a cute party game for a while, but it will never be a solid fighting game.  It could have done without those moments (or at least kept them restricted to finishers) but instead wanted to make them a core part of the gameplay.  I mean, just look at that clip from the reveal where Wonderwoman picks up a car and slams it down on top of her opponent… very WCW v. NWO looking.

lol yeah this game is kind of a DC comic version of of dragonballz raging blast imo… I hope they dont have a those long cut scenes in the gameplay… however I wasnt a fan of MK9 so I probably wouldnt like this either… remember this is just my opinion

        • coocat

dude you are a fucking idiot the supers are no longer than the supers that are in street fighter so tell me why you arent complaining bout that? and the interaction with the stage is exactly what DOA been doing for years! so why not complain about that? but because NR doing it you find negative things to say? the game isnt due for another YEAR! and here you are passing judgement!? and the worst part about your rant is that we havent seen ANY ANY ANY solid gameplay NONE what so ever we seen nothing but short short 5 sec clips and you want to dub the gameplay gimmicky? you sir are a TROLL

          • Nikkawhat

Why would I complain about Street Fighter or DOA on a post that has nothing to do with them?  I don’t like DOA.  I don’t like SF4.  And my complaints with either game don’t solely rest on long animations or “stage interaction.”  I haven’t played a DOA game since the first… but look at how well received that game has been lately… SF4 ultra animations can be a few seconds long, but the entire game is slow paced so who’s going to complain about a slow game being slow?  It has nothing to do with the fact that NR is doing it.  It has to do with what they chose to focus on implementing this in their core gameplay.  And the fact of the matter is, these “short short” clips are shown to elicit a reaction. Not everyone is going to have a positive one.  I can comment negatively on how a game LOOKS just as freely as all the people you aren’t arguing with creaming themselves over these “5 sec clips.” You, sir, are a fool.

          • coocat

dude the fact of the matter is you dont know what type of game is it….everyone has their own opinion but in the world of gaming, you only get respect for having an open mind, which is what you lack. The reason why i keep pointing out that the clips are short is to show that they are not meant to show deep gameplay but to wet your appetite, no type of HUB was shown no decent combo was shown except for the batman combo on flash. Everyone should reserve judgement until they show how everything is integrated into each other, including supers and stage interaction

          • Nikkawhat

So basically what you’re saying is everyone who’s excited about this is wrong because they need to reserve judgment until they show something conclusive.  Or are you being a hypocrite and saying you can get excited over snips but people can’t be disappointed or disinterested in snips?  Hmmm?

          • Nikkawhat

Life being as close minded as you must be really sad dude. Try to treat people better. Having an opinion is fine. Calling everyone names, and calling games that haven’t come a whole mess of crap is why people are hating on you. Chill out.

          • Nikkawhat

Hold on a second.  I’m universally closed minded because I don’t like the teaser footage of ONE video game?  So what makes your assumption about my alleged personality any less closed minded?  You’re working with minimal evidence.

You’re right Nikkawhat. I’m the close minded one. Everyone in this thread is an idiot but you. And this game will be 100,000,000% casual horrible trainwreck guaranteed.

          • Nikkawhat

Plus, it’s DARK ON TOP OF DARK! Fighting games move fast (or they are supposed to, MK type action kind of starts and then stops…starts then stops) and isn’t it hard science that you shouldn’t put dark characters on top of dark backgrounds!?!?!!

Superhero FGs should be bold and bright. Didn’t we learn this in the 90′s?

Man, comics are just going through their angst miasma, where everything has to be gritty and apocalyptic. The “Avengers” movie was good because it didn’t take itself too seriously. The whole concept will never be able to lend itself that well to reality. This game seems like MK with different costumes, when it could be much more original.

I dont think the discussion was about how… “wholesome” Street Fighter (or any other fighting game) women acted.

It was more about the visual aesthetic of the models (how are the variations on body type implemented, are they enhancements or exaggerations of what we naturally see, how does it look from multiple camera perspectives).

Another thing I can’t help but put out there is Netherrealm’s decision to have juggled bodies flail their arms in a spastic manner. I guess it was reminiscent of original MK so it is appropriate for MK9, but this should not have leaked over into the new DC game.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/F6HH3A7KPKA56W75G3NYAV4MVA Strider

Why are their movements stiff like hell?  MK9 and DC vs MK was like that too.  Who punches and kicks like that?  They gotta work on making the movements smoother.

    • IAegisI

This is exactly why I already don’t like this game/MK9. The way they move looks fucking stupid.

    • http://twitter.com/HsienKosHelper Keon

Maybe it has to do with them using mocap suits or something. It probably saves a lot more time but the trade off being this stiff and clunky animation. I really wish they would do whatever the hell Capcom does to make their shit so smooth and fluid.

      • Cain_Marko

I think maybe it has to do with adding in some stylized key-frame (manual) animations. That is the kind of thing CAPCOM never gets credit for, until you see how much other games sorely need it. This is what separates good art from automated churned-out stuff for the masses (who won’t know the difference).

    • http://www.facebook.com/josepht.medina Joey T Medina

It’s crazy to me how tons of people don’t realize why they think these movements are clunky and stiff….

In Capcom and other tradition 2D fighters, moves generally come out in about 3-7 frames.Because of this, the moves look like they come out quickly and recover just as fast.

But, in 3D games, and games like Mortal Kombat and Injustice, they have moves come out on an average of 10-15 frames.

THIS is what makes people think these moves are “clunky and stiff”.Just because it’s different doesn’t mean it’s “clunky”.

I’m all for people having opinions, but flat out “I’m not use to it like this so it’s bad” criticisms make me shake my head at you people. Not every fighting game NEEDS an average of more 3-8 frame moves. Get over it, shit.

      • Shinkounova8485

Nobody cares about how many frames it takes! The animations are just akward period. Besides the characters in Virtua Fighter and Tekken aren’t clunky and stiff. Explain that.

      • Causus

Dude, sorry but no. The reason I think it looks stiff, is not because its slower. Its because MK animations are to be frank, downright cartoonish. They have no sense of weight, acceleration, follow through or even good anatomy. Being slower is not an excuse for crappy unnatural animation.

Tekken, Virtua fighter and DoA don’t look stiff at all by comparison. I haven’t heard many (if any) people complaining about animations in those fighters, they prove that slow attacks can still look smooth and flow convincingly. As long as enough effort and talent is invested.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Anthony-M/705755413 Anthony M.

To be fair, I play both mk and SF, Granted im more of a sf fan but how can you compare a move coming out when you press the button, as compared to seconds after? In sf you punch and kick when the buttons are pressed, Making timing a key issue on all combos. MK you can press your combos as quick as possible and sit there with your hand off the controller for two seconds awaiting the outcome. I feel like every fighting game does NEED to have timing. And if the moves are coming out in 10-15 frames i feel that does ruin the quality of the game, and does make it clunky. Because the charactors and inputs are moving so slow.

        • http://www.facebook.com/josepht.medina Joey T Medina

See, whereas Shinko and Causus are talking about the animation of the game. My post was aimed at people like yourself that believe the FEEL of the game is clunky because of the slower moves.

If you don’t like games like Tekken, Soul Calibur, and Mortal Kombat because of the speed of the moves, it’s perfectly fine. Your reasons are understandable to me.

But some people feel the need to post a million “OMG THIS GAME IS SUCH CLUNKY PIECE OF ASS GARBAGE” just because it’s not what they are use to. Those are the people that peeve me to all hell.

The speed of the moves don’t dictate the fluidity and speed of the gameplay and battles. Street Fighter alot of the time is a very patient and slow paced game. Whereas Tekken, even though the average fastest move on a character is about 12 frames, the gameplay is always speedy and still very reaction based.

          • coocat

            well said

          • coocat

            well said

          • RollenceElloydChiusinco

to add to what you said, a good reason why Tekken has a speedy pace is also because of the lack of a dedicated block button.

This isn’t meant to disparage any other game, but by taking out the need to “do something” in order to block, people have stronger incentive to either move out of the way or swing back at your opponent – which all lead to a faster pace of gameplay.

All of this simply means that the gameplay elements of each game lend to their relative pace (and perhaps also highlight the smoothness of the animations).

Since we ARE on an article about the new game – I will take further time to continue to lament that Netherrealms did NOT think to distance their visual and animation style from MK in this game. I would really have enjoyed seeing this game executed with more care to separating it from being anything similar to MK vs. DC.

          • http://www.facebook.com/josepht.medina Joey T Medina

Ah, as a Tekken and SoulCalibur player I dont agree with your statement on the block button dude, sorry.

SoulCalibur and Mortal Kombat are both really speedy games pace wise too and are heavy on footsies and mobility through dashing. I don’t really see what you’re getting at. They’re different from Tekken and SF, but the block button really doesn’t take anything away from anything pace or gameplay wise except crossovers.

          • RollenceElloydChiusinco

Fair enough. My comment above was more of a personal, subjective opinion on how both games feel and I should have clarified that. I will now.

          • Causus

Thanks for the clarification. My bad.

          • http://twitter.com/Darkforge Bevan Djernaes

It looks this way because NRS don’t have hitstun in their games. Goes to show how important it is aesthetically.

Mind you I hated the animation in MK9 but once I got the game I changed my mind somewhat (bar a few moves.)

      • RollenceElloydChiusinco

What Cain Marko said about Capcom adding additional “hidden” frames of movement that are only visible on hit in SF4 is actually very true – Capcom put in the additional work to make the attacks visually seamless, and they’re rewarded with a game that is surprisingly pleasing to the eyes if you glued your face to the television.

(Disclaimer: I am not recommending you to glue your face to the television. If you so desire to do so, make sure to use super glue for maximum effectiveness. Please post photos.)

Even “DIVE KICK” is smoother than this game.  That’s right.  I trolled.  Because even this trolling statement is true.  If you’re asking what fighting games do I think is smooth, I’ll tell say, “Tekken, Virtua Fighter, Soul Calibur, Dead or Alive.”  And if you’re wondering why I am comparing DC or MK to this, I’ll say, “Because they are fighting games using 3D models with fluid fighting animations.”

I really want to see some of the more Unexplored DC characters

such as Killer Croc, Doomsday, and Black Adam

    • AugustAPC

How are those characters “unexplored?” They’re all major villains in the series. Black Adam is Captain Marvel’s arch enemy. Doomsday essentially killed Super Man and Killer Croc is one of Batman’s most badass villians and was portrayed in Arkham Asylum as a wicked cool boss fight.

Nothing wrong with those characters, but they’re certainly not obscure by any means.

when they first announced sfxt, which looks EXACTLY like ssfiv , everyone was soo excited omg this “looks so good” “im so hype” but as soon the developers of MK drops a game…”this looks just like MK9″ “same game different characters” i mean come STFU they showed like 5 sec clips of the game which didnt show anything and you guys passing judgement! Am i the only one who say the clip of the combo where batman does a very stylish combo by using the environment…did a ground bounce then used the portal to get behind him and finish it off. These environments arent 2 min long animations they are used in your combos. PAY CLOSE ATTENTION TO THE TRAILER and you will notice you all are idiots especially Nikkawhat

    • http://www.facebook.com/josepht.medina Joey T Medina

From what we have seen so far, I think the stage interactivity has potential to be something really interesting. They’re like special moves you could use only at certain places on the stage so it could add depth to the fighting.

And yea, that combo looked awesome to me too, yet 60 messages down you were the first to mention it.

Did you not see the moment(s) where Flash/Batman punched their opponent through a skyscraper and there was a long (and unfinished) animation that shows them transitioning to another part of the stage?  For a game you seem to be obsessing over you sure don’t pick up much. PAY CLOSE ATTENTION TO THE TRAILER and you will notice you missed a lot of what I was referring to, idiot.

      • coocat

its obvioussss that you did not hear Ed Boon say that the reason for people surviving getting hit into space and slammed down to earth by superman has something to do with the story. Hence, batman and flash kicking people through multiple buildings could have something to do with the story like i said PAY CLOSE ATTENTION TO THE TRAILER! idiot

        • Nikkawhat

I don’t care what the reason is for it happening.  It’s still part of the gameplay.  You said there were no long cinematics and there are so like you said PAY CLOSE ATTENTION TO THE TRIALER, idiot.

    • RollenceElloydChiusinco

Well, yes. As earlier said, the whole point of bringing out footage like this is for gaming studios to see what our first impressions of the game are. We aren’t helping its case by simply saying “yeah its good do anything you want we’ll be happy!”. We want this to be a place for us to showcase our concerns about the “feel” of the game – because we fighting game players are an incredibly fickle lot and we expect way too much of the stupidest things sometimes. So its good that Netherrealms gets to listen to what we have to say for how the game looks so far.
The reason behind SFxT looking like SF4 makes perfect sense – its because the game engine (especially for SF characters) is INTENTIONALLY very similar to SF4. So, consistency of visual schema = consistency of cognitive schema. English: It wants to PLAY like SF4 with extra craziness, so start by LOOKING like SF4, then add the visual craziness on top too. This game is trying to deal with a whole other basket of Intellectual Property – and is actually marketed with vastly different gameplay mechanics (strong emphasis on environmental interaction, and likely no fatalities or excessive bloody violence, for example). That it plays very similar to MK9 does not do it very good justice – because it is very easy for us to simply assume that Netherrealms either got lazy and copy-pasted the engine over new characters, or got scared of branching out and decided to stick with what works (to its detriment). I’m not saying that’s what happened – but it doesn’t provide strong evidence AGAINST it.

      • coocat

i agree 100% with you but my intentions weren’t to down Capcom’s decision on choosing the same graphics engine as SF4 because i totally get the idea why they did, but to give an idea of peoples narrow mindedness. Why not give the game a chance like you did SFXT? why not have high hopes like you did SFXT? It was promising nothing new yet people were all starry eyed! Here we have NRS Injustice game which uses the same graphics engine as MK9 but they changed the way you viewed the game because blood, guts, spines were no longer a factor now we have super heros using the envornment, like they do in the comics, which is a complete shift from what mk9 was. I like your self Rollence, believe they shouldve used a new engine but i am not as upset as these other guys because i see potential, and i am well aware that it is not even close to being finished

        • RollenceElloydChiusinco

You know what, you’ve exposed me good and you’re right. I feel that I’ve tinged my comments with a bias towards my own familiar favorite games. I like MK9 in a casual sense, but not in a deep competitive manner that I view other fighting games, and that sentiment just extended itself into this game.

I never meant to imply that this game doesn’t deserve the chance, and I was in the wrong for not making that clear. This game definitely has potential (and opportunity to change over time), and all I can say is that I personally feel that the further off this game is (aesthetically, mechanically, technologically) from MK9, the better NRS’ results will be. Those folks have proven themselves mighty talented for making one good game – to make another shouldn’t be too hard of a stretch for them.

  • http://twitter.com/Fatality_check Timothy Walmsley

Man…reading these comments is awful. People judge so quickly it’s ludicrous. Yeah it will no doubt have similarities to MK, that’s not necessarily a bad thing. People are ranting and raving about how it looks stiff etc. Netherealm are trying to make the game accessible and they do a god job (based on MK9), even if that does mean it’s a bit more slower and a bit less technical. It works both ways. I know people who tried SF and find it really stiff as well, it’s what you’re used to I guess. It might not be your cup of tea like a lot of other fighters but it doesn’t mean it’s a piece of shit. People just need to respect other the games for what they are.

Most people are here are interested in the game because it has the POSSIBILITY of being good. It could be bad, but it COULD be good. And that’s what makes them interested.

The people who are claiming straight up it will be bad on the other hand are completely closed to the POSSIBILITY of it being good.

How is that so hard to understand? Nikkawhat I think you should sleep on this thread and read it back a day or two from now buddy. I think you might be having a bad day or something because if you can’t see how you’re coming off as a bit like an ignorant elitest then I really just hope the best for you in the rest of your life. Nah, he isn’t stupid. He started off just stating his opinion, but as people started calling him out for voicing his radical opinion in a rude way he started getting really defensive and just flat out angry and mean. I’m serious, he should really just sleep on this thread.

In the end I think his over the top defensive comments made alot of people actually wanting to see how this game will turn out in a weird way. So it all works out.

  • AugustAPC

Nah, he’s dumb as shit from the get-go. We’ve seen nothing but the equivalent of any super, hyper or ultra combo from any fighting game, yet idiots like him are already making judgements.

Speculation is one thing, but his “opinion” was already a snarky, assessment of shit he’s clueless about.

  • Nikkawhat

I’m sorry, what?  You’re dodging my questions.  If you like something you know “nothing” about isn’t that biased as well?  Is that bias towards the developer?  No.  I know just as much about this game as you and everyone else who has watched these trailers and interviews.  Therefore, just as they can form positive OPINIONS about this game I can form a negative one.  People are so quick to dish out insults towards others’ intelligence while simultaneously making the most unintelligent statements.  Also I think it’s funny that you try to call out my comprehension when you can’t even properly address the issues I’m presenting you.

Also, Joey just because people are holding out hope that the game COULD be good doesn’t mean they’re more justified in their praise of the footage you and your crew continue to categorize as “short” and “limited” simply because it’s positive.  Being optimistic doesn’t mean your opinion should be more heralded.  My point is, for every person you’re chastising as “closed minded” for being doubtful about this game, you should be equally critical of every person blindly sucking off the little that’s been shown.

lol August. What are you, Ed Boon in disguise? You seem a little too butthurt by my “snarky” comments. It’s a tad unhealthy. It’s a video game. I don’t have to like it. You don’t have to agree. Shut the fuck up and stop bitching because not everyone shares your opinion.

I’m pretty interested in this, it could be fun. Though I hope the stage elements aren’t an overpowering unbalanced gimmick and instead actually add some legitimate depth and strategy to the tactics chosen in gameplay.

Strictly visually speaking, I’m not liking the look of this game. It looks like Mortal Kombat characters cosplaying as DC superheroes. Visually, it just doesn’t really strike me as “DC”, which I feel is pretty important when making a game based in the DC universe. I also really don’t like the animation of the moves, which was one of my biggest turn-offs to Mortal Kombat. It just looks so stiff and robotic and I think that’s another reason why a lot of the characters don’t feel like who their supposed to be. Since I know I’ll be attacked for expressing something as taboo as an opinion on the internet I want to say that I understand the game isn’t out yet and so I wanna stress that (obviously) all of my remarks are based solely on what has been shown so far, and are just MY opinion.

Hmm, how about closed-minded?  You do realize that isn’t restricted to those with negative reactions correct?  Someone who is closed-minded is simply “[i]ntolerant of the beliefs and opinions of others.”  With that said, stubbornly and fanatically stating that this will be a good game is being closed-minded to the idea that it won’t be.

Negative criticism shouldn’t be immediately shamed.  Fucking developers (good ones at least) LOOK for criticism of all types to show them where they succeeded and where to make changes.  You also repeatedly act as if this is some plague I suffer from where I approach everything new with pessimism.  People are allowed to be turned off to something without being labeled a “troll” or any of the list of names people chose to include in their mindless responses.  Disapproving of one thing does not necessitate that someone be labeled a fucking cynic for eternity in any and all facets of life.  Me not liking this game is not a reflection of me “having a bad day.”  It is my knee jerk reaction to these reveals.  Just like others may have had knee jerk joygasms to this and other trailers, I thought it was unimpressive.  I have to like something just because it’s new?  I guess I should start eating bugs because it’s something I’ve yet to try and some people are under the impression that they actually taste good.  I dare not say that such a thing is disgusting or unappetizing without giving it a chance.  Hell, you people are fucking calling me out for something you probably often do yourselves.  ”No way… I won’t play the Thor movie video game.  Games based on movies are ass and the graphics and gameplay look like shit.  Fuck giving it a try, it got a 3 on IGN.”  ”Uh no, I’m not licking a girl’s butt. That’s dirty.” (Friend) “But you’ll never know til you try!”  Does that make you a generally negative person?  Fuck no, and only an idiot would say that forming an opinion over a few trivial things and not investing time into finding the truth makes one a pessimist.  Once again, I made a leap in judgment from what I’ve seen of this game so far, you people said I couldn’t do that.  Then you subsequently tried to assess this game in a positive light AND my fucking character as a human being from a few things I’ve said regarding this game using just as little (if not less) evidence in support of your claims.  Recognize where you went wrong then try to tell me what I’m saying is out of line.

  • http://www.facebook.com/josepht.medina Joey T Medina

Wow. Dude I think if we continue this conversation it has to be 1 on 1. You’re getting really defensive on the game part of things where I’m really talking about the way you speak to people plus the things you say.
I see that I’m not really doing anything to calm you down so I’ll just stop. I just hoped to let you see that the reason why people are being so negative toward you is because you were being negative. I wish the best for you and those around you in your future dude.

It could be just me, but to this day i do not understand “animations are clunky” arguments that plagued MK9 before it’s released. Players of the game will tell you that MK9′s animations work for the game beautifully. Animations are different but not necessarily clunky, not once have animations rendered the game unplayable or cause it to feel less fluid. It feels and looks vastly different from other fighters but that’s because, quite frankly it is. Everything from the pace of the game, frames, hitboxes, general knowledge of it’s mechanics is different. Taking the time to learn MK9 upon it’s release for high-level play has given me a some understanding of how Injustice will play and feel. Players of MK9 should not have a problem jumping right in with that said understanding. Graphical comparisons are the only legitimate comparisons I feel comfortable making between MK9/Injustice and other fighters. I play a number of fighters daily, ranging from current favorites to obscure titles like Kizuna Encounter and Falling Angels; I can vouch and tell you that no 2 IPs will feel the same. In some cases like Tekken 4 to Tekken 5 or SFIII to SFIV, gameplay differences can be large enough to cause a rift and split fans of the franchise apart. It’s VERY easy to sound downright dumb or absurd making gameplay or animation comparisons between fighters of different developers. I hardly make SFIV and SFxTK comparisons now, because i understand what works for SFxTK is meant to work only for SFxTK not Alpha 3, Rival Schools or any other Capcom fighter.

It may be hard to understand if you only heavily played 3 or 4 different fighters. Learn the genre in it’s entirety if you can, play as many different IPs as you can get your hands on. There’s so much rich history and knowledge out there to be utilized for future gaming experiences. I promise you will gain a better understanding of how fighters work in general.

What exactly gives you the impression that I’m anything other than calm?  The fact that I liberally use profanity?  No, sorry.  I just use it for emphasis in a textual medium that does not allow for text formatting.  Many people here have said more audacious things than I have.  Just look at one of the more recent posts: ”
No one care about this game. Any MK-related things were sucks and always will be.”  I make a statement solely about THIS game and I’m claimed to be a troll/Capcom fanboy hating on all things MK/NRS out of “blind hatred.”  His comment and many others go unaddressed.  I simply specified why I think the game is a gimmick after being challenged by multiple respondents.

The only thing I take issue with is you and others constantly calling me “defensive” or “angry” instead of responding the questions I’m posing to you – you really haven’t addressed one of them.  I don’t care that people are being negative towards me.  Such is the way of online (forum-based) interactions – you disagree with someone, they take issue with it.  I don’t have to be wary of my wording when it comes to my determinations or opinions.  I don’t need to be sensitive to others’ feelings or impressions with how harsh my criticism is.  It’s all for effect – to add color.  You don’t like my opinion?  Fine, but don’t try to tell me this isn’t the place to voice them or that I’m “a troll” for doing anything but basking in the “glory” of this potential masterpiece.  If you choose to, I will out-talk you and illustrate why you’re wrong and flip any insult you throw at me in the process; and I will do it with a smile, not a snare.
