Daigo Umehara Set to Make First US Tournament Appearance Since EVO 2011 at CEO 2012

Alex Jebailey, the organizer behind the CEO tournament series in Florida, just made a very special player announcement during tonight’s broadcast of Cross Counter Live. The Beast himself, Daigo Umehara of Team Mad Catz, will end his drought of American tournament appearances by attending CEO 2012 in Orlando, making this his first tournament on US shores since EVO 2011. He’s subsequently taken second at the highly-publicized LG Cup in Korea, an international tournament that saw stiff competition from players like Justin Wong, Fuudo, and the eventual champion Poongko, took third at Tougeki 2011 with Iyo, and released a book entitled The Willpower to Keep Winning, which by last count has sold over 28,000 copies.

CEO 2012 is set to be one of this year’s premier national competitions and, as a pit stop on the Road to EVO, will include pot bonuses and seeding points for those that place high enough. With 250 rooms already booked at the tournament venue, this announcement is sure to stir up even more registrations. Be sure to secure your spot today by visiting the official CEO Gaming website.

Online registration will be open until June 10th, so take advantage of that as soon as possible to enjoy guaranteed regional placement in pools. CEO 2012 takes place June 15th – 17th.

Meh, waste of money. The several thousand bucks spent for his appearance fees would have been better spent for a pot bonus, like how the 2000 UMvC3 pot bonus has everyone buzzing over ECT. Hopefully there will come a day where TOs realize what a waste of money it is to pay for foreign players who should be paying off their own pockets just like any Amercian player.

    • souli23

So you’re saying Madcatz don’t pay for anything?
Then what’s the point of sponsors?

    • Bavo Bruylandt

What waste of Money? Daigo is coming on his own accord to CEO. Try again with the failed hate my friend :) . I’ve gotten over 5,000 in bonus money across all games at CEO as well.

      • BubbaChiefJohnson

What exactly does Daigo do for a living?

        • http://twitter.com/UseProtection Mysteriously Unnamed

           Wins.

          • BubbaChiefJohnson

What’s the conversion rate from dickriding to medical/401k these days for winners anyway?

          • http://www.facebook.com/people/Yan-Zhao/10516382 Yan Zhao

Oh look another “dickriding” comment. I thought Americans finally grew up from that line of thought. Apparently not you.

          IIRC he’s a nurse.

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/John-Andre-Nilsen/100002245428541 John Andre Nilsen

He works as nurse at a hospital! After working he goes to the Arcade and plays for 6 hours each day.

He probably paid his own plane tickets to get to the tournament or madcatz paid it for him.

          • SDS_Overfiend

So he is a mild manner male nurse by day who helps folk to get better and rest comfortably but by Night he helps his cause by putting folks in the hospital lmao!!

      • spectaa

Do you think Daigo’s presence will motivate more players to register?

        • pootnannies

i think it will bring more participants but not necessarily players. it would definitely make the event bigger, especially on stream.

Don’t listen to the troll, I haven’t seen Daigo for ages, I’m really excited to see him play, I don’t live in the US but if I did I would definitely go to CEO for this. It sounds like this is going to be an amazing tournament, well done so far, and best of luck for next month!

        • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_YV2437XOBMNL5UI3GR3PWIDHWY Rong

Daigo usually bring a translator to his oversea tournament appearances. I know Shino is his translator for EVO. I can’t wait for Shino to say

“The Beast is not amused, ahem, you are all free now!”

          That would be so funny.

I dunno what it is, I used to be all for Americans trying to beat Daigo, but… Something about how he’s been acting lately, and all the stuff he put in his book, makes me wanna root for Daigo even more.

    So here’s to his victory.

    • FakMeLaterally

It’s not just “lately”. The guy shows so much respect for his opponents even when they show very little back. He does nothing to wind up the USA crowd (other than winning), so it comes across as extremely desperate when he’s given stick for it.

Just for ONCE, can the focus be on who’s going to win the tournament? Rather then who’s going to knock out Daigo.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ivan-Noltenius/839150149 Ivan Noltenius

I’ve never seen anyone be straight up disrespectful to Daigo. Even Fchamp has loads of respect for him.

        • http://profile.yahoo.com/BLL3XMY6DVGS5DO7W45HR5AFQA red

you missed that game where people were screaming USA after someone knocked out daigo and noone shook his hand, said goodbye, etc.

          • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_YV2437XOBMNL5UI3GR3PWIDHWY Rong

For those who bested the beast on a lucky streak, it was the BEST DAY EVAH!

For Daigo, it was just Tuesday.

      • dementus666

It’s human nature to root for the underdogs.  And Daigo, rarely, is an underdog.

        • spectaa

I hope he enters Marvel, Daigo vs Noah, just do it.

      • Jake Long

        1) Americans love cheering for underdogs, and Daigo is so talented that he’s almost NEVER an underdog.

        2) I’ve never seen or heard anyone disrespect Daigo.  All they do is root for his opponent (see #1) and get extra hype when someone beats him (again, see #1).

        3) Daigo is so good that often times, the person who beats Daigo and the person who wins it all is the same.

    • http://twitter.com/Ruffaelle_ Ruffaelle

exactly what i was thinking, well said man.

    • SDS_Overfiend

Is it because he not making it a country vs country thing anymore but acting more of a fighting game ambassador?

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Almeson-Hoku-James/100000479628267 Almeson Hoku James

He should join a Catherine tournament with nothing but his boxers.

    • Johnson Nguyen

lol. He really does look like an Asian Vincent Brooks.

  • Blk_Azn

    WOW SO MUCH HYPE.
I wonder if Daigo will enter the Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo Tournament at CEO. Everyone get to see the classic ryu action and the SSF4 Ryu action

    • souli23

I don’t see why he wouldn’t enter ST, I mean it is one of his favorite games IIRC

Cant wait to see his performance. Been too long.

  • OKNO

Why are people excited all he does is hadoken spam there is nothing special about his game. I hope Poongko bodies him again like he did at Evo and the recent LG cup. What Poongko can do is real skill.
